The cohort study is useless because people might take supplements to offset bad lifestyle choices.
True, we did elude to that in the episode, but that’s the only type of evidence we will generally get in these queries.

Please talk in specific terms. How does HDL convert exogenous cholesterol into endogenous cholesterol?
@@veniqe exogenous cholesterol (if absorbed as only 10-15% is) will be transported to the liver via chylomicrons. Once in the liver, the cholesterol and triglycerides obtained from the diet, will then have the options of being used in bile salts or will be transported to the rest of the body, mainly in the form of VLDL. HDL is predominantly used in ‘reverse cholesterol transport’, but there are a couple of studies, stating HDL can also take the cholesterol from the liver to the cells of the body. It is an area that I need to research more in to, but if so, this would render LDL particles pretty much obsolete and predominantly atherogenic. Hope this helps
@@TheChemistCouplePodcast HDL contains a small portion of cholesterol. The biggest portion is protein. Yes, HDL is the body's 'janitor'. Where do you think that cholesterol originates from? It's not endogenously synthesised. Please look into chirality. The textbooks talk about only absorbing up to 15% of dietary cholesterol. This may be true for people on a high-carb or a high-protein diet, but that's not been my experience. My HDL is 93mg/dL or 2.4mmol/L because I eat 150g suet every day. I eat a low-protein, low-carb diet. People who eat plants absorb less dietary cholesterol; therefore their HDL will be low. Their LDL will also be low because plants block the endogenous synthesis of cholesterol. Why do some very active people have high LDL? Because they're very active on a high-protein diet.
Please share the studies that show HDL transports LDL from the liver to extrahepatic cells. Please also share the information for exogenous cholesterol being packaged into VLDLs.
I believe a lot of active people who have sub-optimal LDL values are due to genetic LDL receptor abnormalities and this was highlighted via the introduction of PCSK9 inhibitors. I have issues with my lipid profile, hence why I am trialling multiple diet changes etc. to see if the science works for me. With regards to VLDL, I don’t have the studies to hand but if you review this on BMJ, they have a generally accepted cholesterol pathway. You’ve raised some good points, I feel it’s hard to convey all of the answers in these comments
@@TheChemistCouplePodcast People who have suboptimal LDL values tend to have suboptimal diets and some of them are too active.
The argument is that due to the depletion of soils and farming industrial complex which means foods have less nutrition, we need supplements. Correct?
That’s a great point, it then also opens up how do pesticides affect our food quality, along with the use of agricultural antibiotics. From what we’ve read, reputable supermarkets in the UK & USA do have produce that, if consumed in a balanced manner, should not require supplementation for the majority of the population. If you can get it from organic farms, that’s ideal, but the cost will be much greater as you know. Also, the vitamins you buy, may not be what they state they are in terms of ingredient quantity too, so it does leave us in a tricky situation. From patients that we see daily, who don’t have the best of diets, haven’t required supplementation when we run their blood work and we don’t supplement personally, hopefully this gives you more clarity. This reply could have gone for a lot longer than it has haha
Great video. You got a new sub.

What about the other issues with these plants like the lectins and oxalates?!
and re red meat - has it not been disproven now that saturated fat causes high cholesterol and the culprit is actually the carbohydrate?!
Thanks for the comment Stephanie, with regards to ‘anti-nutrients’ lectins and oxalates, we are not concerned on a personal level. Most are eradicated through normal food preparation and we don’t seem to have enough to make them toxic from what I’ve read. Obviously, there are drawbacks to anything in health, water can cause hyponatraemia, cerebral oedema etc, but we wouldn’t discourage people to drink water and I will apply that to plants within our diet. Plants have many benefits (too many to name here), therefore, it would not be advisable to reduce our intake because of limited evidence. We are both omnivores, and like your comment suggests, no diet is perfect, also science is ever evolving. For saturated fat and its link to apoB/non HDL-cholesterol, there still seems to be a link; but we agree that carbohydrates have too. More studies are emerging to back carbohydrates, but we feel they are not the sole culprit. As you know, it’s hard to remove confounding factors from studies, but we are open to creating a healthier lifestyle to prevent non-communicable diseases and appreciate anyone who comments/supports our aim
@TheChemistCouplePodcast thank you for your reply. I watch a lot of information on health and the more I watch, the more confused I become at the different information out there, all "backed by science". It's to the point where I have no idea what to believe anymore.
We agree! The more we look into the science and how we practice in health care, it does make you question a lot. We put our studies below and we practice the science we research, as that should instil a bit more confidence in any one who listens to us. Any more questions, feel free to email us and we’ll be more than happy to give you our opinion on whatever it is, thanks again for the great question.
