I’m so sorry for your pain as your story brought me to tears just seeing the hurt you both are feeling. I appreciate your story to help bring awareness. I had it too in 1976 or 77 at age 3, Stage 5 with coma. No one knew what it was or how to treat it. I was told that I was so delirious the hospital quarantined me and called in a Priest because I acted crazy. It took 3 men to hold me down to strap me into a crib. I had lost my sight before I went into the coma and I’m sure I was terrified. Thank God I had a doctor that spent an evening calling all around the US trying to find an answer until he was told by another Physician to test my liver enzymes and how to treat if elevated. I was fortunate to receive intervention early enough to help although I spent several weeks in the hospital but eventually woke up and made a slow but full recovery. I have found in the last few years that I have a mitochondrional disorder which really has no symptoms except the MTHFR defect. It seems those of us that had Reye’s also share this metabolic defect. May God bless her soul and yours. Amber

So interesting to hear Bob tell the history of his dad and how he got into working with dogs at such a tender age. I have an inquiry. In 1949 my family bought a small, tract home in San Fernando Ca built on recently acquired land which was in an orange grove. In addition to 7 wonderful orange trees, we also had a very strange looking collie that daily wandered down our street. The other folks who had lived there awhile said that it was one of the Weatherwax collies and wasn't being raised to perform as it had a nose which jutted to one side a bit. I always wondered if that was true. They said that the Weatherwax training facility was in the area. Though I rode my bike around I never spotted it. Was this true or was it just a local myth. I always loved these wonderful performing dogs and was a great fan of Benji, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, and read all the Albert Payson Terhune books as a kid. Thanks for all the good works with dogs and folks.

Only so late? No excursion by the Jews of Israel visits this place which should be their MANDATORY passage. They are brought up to hate the Poles. Accompanied to Poland by armed soldiers / Mossads, they are forbidden to have any contact with young Poles of their age. They are told that Poles are going to throw bombs out of windows and other nonsense. Why the Polish state allows them to enter its country with arms. Surely pressure from Israel. Inconceivable in any country in the world.

Gary Lester -Thanks for posting this. I have seen the film The Zookeeper's Wife. I loved it. And, I am now 1/2 way through Diane Ackerman's book. Often we think we know history. But, we continue to discover it throughout our lives. I found out a similar kind of thing seeing Hidden Figures. I knew nothing about that story. Although, it was not directly life and death at that time. It was death earlier in US history and later with the assassinations MLK, Evers, and Malcolm X. And, it also showed prejudice without knowledge or sensitivity. Thankfully, at the age of 65, I'm still learning things. Best wishes, Ted

Theo, this is truly an amazing story. The movie, like all Hollywood movies based on true stories, contains a good deal of fiction. You will find much more historical accuracy in Diane Ackerman's book, although Ryszard Zabinski, who examined our screenplay word for word, believes his father was the true hero, as he is the one who made all the decisions for the family. I would say they all were heroes.

    • @bhpix85

The film, like most films based on true stories, offers a lot of fictional scenes. Most of the accurate details can be found in the Ackerman book. Enjoy!

When I was at that ZOO and saw the pheasant cages full of beautiful pheasants I had no idea what history was behind them. There were so many courageous people who risked their own lives to save others. Unfortunately majority of my family perished, my father was the only survivor and my uncle died in Berlin, he was 17. In place where used to be Ghetto there is a beautiful monument to all those who perished. Bless their souls.

Because the saved Jews never showed their gratitude to this heroic couple who risked their lives and that of their children. Inhuman ingratitude for this couple and their so human children. It took XXI century to learn their history. Even the Poles, it was forbidden to know her because of communist power, mostly Jewish on the other hand the whole world knows the lies and inaccuracies of the racist polonophobic Jew Gross, to whom this Poland hates gave the education with the money of the non-Jewish Polish taxpayers. @@bhpix85 For once you are giving a reasonable answer. Yes, Poles saved Jews at the risk of their lives and their families like no other country in Europe. Why saved Jews never reveal for themselves that they were saved by Poles. They denounced themselves and collaborated with the Germans (Judenrat, militia, Jewish Gestapo) They prefer to speak of Schindler, a German Nazi. They have always been more Polonophobic racists than anti-Jewish Poles. How come that in this country of which they were citizens, only a small percentage spoke the language of their country. Nowhere in Europe could it not have been tolerated.

The Germans were brutal, but the Russians were too I am still waiting for similar movies and stories about the West criminally ignoring the plight of the people caught up by the war led by ruthless leaders like Hitler, Stalin, and Churchill. There is plenty of blame to go around even among some Jewish Business Leaders who profited during the pre WWII period from others.

Stan, we can stop this by realizing that the people in every country outnumber the people in governments. If every person stood up and said NO ! and demanded each official step down it would be a start. We have to realize that people, in general, do not want war. They want peace and a place to raise their children, crops, and just be free. Some countries have tried and some have failed. However more have succeeded than failed. Bad people and corporations run the world, the elite few, and it is time we all voted, elected, governments out and demanded peace. I will probably get blasted by trolls for saying this but it is true. We do not need government control. We do not need big corporations who fund both sides of war. It is time we take back our countries and live in peace. It is only through love and peace that this planet can survive. We have to stop buying into media manipulation and listen to our hearts. If everyone did what this brave couple did, wars would end. Money can not buy peace and happiness. Only compassion, love, and tolerance can stop violence and give all people freedom. ALL life is precious, no matter the color of the skin, what country they come from, or what social class. ALL life should be cherished.

I also grew up watching last hearing runs on Nickelodeon after school or whenever I could, then when I was 4 years old I watched the new Lassie series on the Family Channel. When I was in 7th grade and I watched another Lassie series made in Canada on Animal Planet. It's really nice to go back to my childhood memories from the 80s and 90s. I was the only one in my family that liked watching Lassie on TV. So I grew up with 7th-9th generational Lassie dogs on TV The Old Man 1989, Howard 1994, and Laddle 1997.

When my husband had brain surgery to remove a tumor our dog was the only one that could get him to move (get up out of bed) so dogs are great therapy! I know if I would have had better health I would had been a good dog trainer. I did well training our dogs but of course no where near as good as the Weatherwax's :)
