How To Change Your Motorcycle Oil and Save Cash - Triumph America Synthetic Oil Change (AMSOIL)
In this video I go through a simple DIY Oil change on a Triumph America. I am a former motorcycle instructor and a rider who loves bikes. I am not a mechanic. That said, you really don't need to be a mechanic to master many of the basic DIY skills that come along with owning a motorcycle.
I recommend fully synthetic AMSOIL motorcycle oil. I was a consumer before I became an Independent AMSOIL dealer, and I would not recommend anything that I don't fully believe in. For a limited time, contact me at FiveStarEngineOil.com and ask how to get a free AMSOIL preferred customer membership!
That said, there are a lot of opinions out there so you do you. The main rules I would keep in mind are these:
1) Buy the best oil you can afford. Oil is the life blood of your bike.
2) Always use MOTORCYCLE specific oil. It is specially designed for your motorcycle.
3) Change your filter when you change your oil.
4) Frequently check your oil (and other fluid) levels. Change them according to manufacturer recommendations.
If you are looking to protect your bike with some of the best oil in the market, please consider supporting the channel and check out my website at fivestarengineoil.com. My only sponsor on this channel is me.
To see exactly what you need to complete an oil change for your specific bike check out the link here: www.amsoil.ca/lookup/motorcycle/?zo=30722108

Knowing how to change your own oil means you can save a lot of time and energy trying to get your bike into your local shop. It's one of the most critical maintenance items to keep up on to ensure that your bikes stays in great running condition, and I would argue that it is a bit therapeutic to do it yourself. I do eat my words a bit here related to a former comment I made in another video, but that said we are always learning and forming new opinions. I am definitely interested in hearing some of yours in the comments!
Remember that your owner's manual and service manual are the bibles for when it comes to how to service your bike. Ideally go by the book and consult your manual for the specified torque settings and use a torque wrench on your drain plug.

UA-cam videos are a great way to learn but keep in mind that they are no substitute for in person training from a qualified instructor. Ride safe and ride on!

      Sorry to hear about your accident. Hopefully you were not hurt too badly, and kudos to you for not giving up on riding. I don’t know how easy it will be in your area to find a replacement if you want another Triumph America LT. I would probably do some online searches for private sales and maybe call your local Triumph dealer. Insurance is another thing and it really depends on your policy. Unfortunately I don’t know enough about your specific situation, but if your have a broker find out what your policy covers and the impact of making a claim. Nice…the LT in this video was actually sold and registered to the original owner as a Triumph America since the dealership put the windshield, bags, and backrest that were on it on a different bike. I recently went from my zzr600 to a virago 250 (same bike just older) I've been riding for around 10 years and people at work keep asking me what the hell possessed me to do that so I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in here and say basically the same thing I tell them, when it comes to riding motorcycles it depends entirely on what you want to do if you want a sport bike or you want a dirt bike buy that and if you want to go fast get a fast bike. If what you want is a bike for getting to work or going out to the shops y'kno A to B is the important part the virago is (and has been so far) an absolutely fantastic choice because what you need in that case is easy to ride cheap to maintain good gas mileage and reliability, speed is not even a concern so it always makes me laugh when people say it's slow yes in comparison to a bike FOR speed sure but don't be fooled it is as fast as it needs to be no more no less. Now a few things that I want to address they aren't really pros or cons just things to consider, I have a love/hate for the rear brake it is a drum which turns a lot of people off (me included kinda) but being a drum it is very forgiving for slow speed manoeuvrers (u-turns and such) and it does its job but you have to push it a bit the combined weight is just on the edge of what it can handle, the front brake is...concerning it might just be mine (I do plan to overhaul the entire front brake system so if It makes a difference and I remember I'll update) but the lever is REALLY stiff and I find I have to slam on to get any kind of response out of it which did nearly get me rear ending a brake checker the other day. If I'm understanding correctly the virago has a single pot caliper where the vstar has dual so maybe that isn't an issue for the vstar. The front suspension is great there is no adjustment and honestly I cant imagine in what direction I'd want to adjust it but the rear is seriously lacking I'm 6ft 75kg and it's on the weakest setting which just makes it bounce around but any higher than that and you feel every bump, there are plenty of after market options but I think a softer seat would go a long way to smoothing it out a bit. The sound is...look everyone wants it to sound like a harley just know 2 things 1) if you lower the idle to get that sound the generator wont put out enough power to charge the battery at idle and 2) one of those exhausts is fake it's actually a 2 into 1 exhaust but the pipe for the rear cylinder is hidden now you can change that but you then may have to be weary of where the pipe sits and potentially burning your leg that said I've heard some pretty convincing after market pipes The last thing I want to mention is seriously look at changing the sprockets I hear a lot of people go to 17 40 (i'm going 17 42 soon again will update if I remember) and getting insane gas milage improvements plus at highway speed because the engine is at a lower rpm it will vibrate a lot less, as I understand it yamaha set the factory ratio (16 46) to be forgiving to new riders but it really is a disservice to the bike once you understand how setting off works going 1st 5mph 2nd 10mph 3rd 20mph 4th 30mph is just silly I mean the other day I climbed a 45 degree incline in 5th gear what the hell are the other gears even for. Thats about everything I can think of people get hung up on "it's for beginners" but again it's about what do you want as a rider do you want low gas consumption cheap insurance cheap maintenance easy to ride comfortable (ish) way to get around beginner or not I can't imagine NOT wanting that in general, if you want a go fast toy then yeah sure this aint it but that's not what it's for.

    In my early 60s now, been riding since I was 18. Have had too many bikes to begin to list. But after 2 surgeries on my shoulder, I found maneuvering a 900 lbs Electra glide with the wife to be on the back, to be too much weight to handle in parking lots and in my driveway. So reluctantly, I sold it and picked up a very nice 2018 Harley Freewheeler ( trike) and love it. After a year of ownership, I started to miss the feeling of leaning into curves, something that you don't do on a trike. So I just picked up a 2012 Triumph Speedster with around 13,000 kms on it. Only had the opportunity to ride it 2 times as the weather is crap this sprin in Alberta, but so far I really enjoy the lightweight and nimbleness of this bike. Similar to the Kawasaki 900 LT that I had several years ago. I just ordered a Slipstream windshield/fairing , as the small windshield that came with the bike was causing a lot of helmet buffeting. At this point in my life, being comfortable is more important than looking cool. I still plan on keeping the Freewheeler, as we plan on doing some travel this summer and it is perfect for two up riding and long distance comfort especially for the lady. Enjoyed your review on this America. Since my bike did not come with a manual, what are the 2 rubber buttons on the dash there for? I don't know if they are covers or some kind of switch. Cheers from Northern Alberta.😎

    I bought a new 2015 America LT in January 2016. It runs smooth and quiet (totally stock), and comfortable on longer rides (for me, a couple or few hundred miles). I have 7022 miles on it, and the only complaint I have is that it is so smooth and quiet that I miss the thrill of riding a louder bike with vibrations such as my 1980 Yamaha XS 650. Bought my 2002 Triumph America in 2007. It had 600 miles on it and I paid 5000$ for it. Have no complains with the drive train. Low and easy maintenance. Windshield, footboards to and bags and it works as either a Saturday cruiser or short range touring. I put a wider front tire, a gummier Avons on it. A fatter front tire helps stabilize it a bit at higher speeds. I truly wish steering dampeners were available. Has enough power for my needs. And I got the classic Black And Silver. My bike is one of the last Triumphs built in the original factory, before it burnt down. . It is a pretty tough bike, I don't spend a lot of time washing and polishing. If it's a nice enough day to polish it , it's a nice enough day to ride it . I started out way back in the early sixties at ten on a cub. Rode a lot of Triumph until they went belly up. Rode a 75 Harley Fl until 2002 . How does this compare. It doesn't. Different bikes for different purposes. Still Avery good bike. Keep the shiney side up.

    Great review and I'm going to call my insurance and see what they say. I called last year about an FJR1300 and they wanted $1200....that's on TOP of my vstar AND my pickup. I said "you realize I can't drive all three at the same time right"? "yes we take that into consideration. Yeah, I was born at night but not LAST night. The thing about parts: yeah might be an issue down the road (pun intended haha) but it sure isn't shying people away from victory and the whole line's been killed for years. Not to mention in 2024+ you can pretty much get anything made that you might need. Another thing about the 1200: it's gone liquid cooled. On a big tourer ok, but I'm a purest I guess. Been riding air cooled since the 70's so that's my "thing". Not to mention the look of a big honking radiator out front. Some manufacturers don't even bother to try and integrate it they just bolt something up front. Not to mention you're cruising along miles from no where and get a wheel nut or piece of gravel through the rad and you're toast. Air cooled? It'd just bounce off.

I can insure both for $183 Crazy considering you can't ride both at the same time and we can only ride here for about 5 months of the year. Specially crazy considering in FLA, I know someone who has full coverage on a Harley Ultra Glide for $385 per year AND they can ride all year. We get SO ripped off for insurance here in Canada. I mean, I've been riding accident free for almost 50 yrs.

    1:51 I bought a helmet lock that bolts onto the handle bars. Put it right between the 2 mounts. I looked at the side mount ones, thought people might start tossing litter into them (happened to me a lot when I was in my teens).

      @@CaledoniaKeys I had a 400/4 honda, rode that thing everywhere. Had the helmet hook under the seat and at least once a day had an empty chip bag or something in it. Prob cuz it was an open face with no visor, people looked at it as a target! Same now as my pickup, w/o fail someone's always throwing crap in the back.

    Where did you get windshield? I have a 2010 america

    • @CaledoniaKeys
      @CaledoniaKeys 7 місяців тому

      The windshield is the stock windshield for the Triumph America LT. When I bought the bike it didn’t have one, so I posted online and found one used from someone who put an aftermarket windshield on. So your local Kijiji or Craigslist. That said, you can have a Triumph dealer or Triumph head office do a search for you to see if there is any old stock remaining.

    How would you remove stress cracks out of a1/4” plexiglass

    • @CaledoniaKeys
      @CaledoniaKeys 9 місяців тому

      Admittedly I am not an expert on this one. In theory a clear UV type adhesive might be the way to go but I have never done it myself. It flows like water and will get into cracks readily. Excess can be wiped off before applying a UV source to the area. Do a Google on UV adhesive for plastic.

    is it big enough? Sure! Trouble is with the gearing being 16/45, first gear is a granny while 2nd is more like a true 1st. I rode it stock for ages, then swapped it to a 17 tooth front, and about a year later swapped the rear sprocket to a 40 and a 112 chain; it's like a whole new bike. ~19% gearing change overall. I would recommend it to anyone who's had one for more than a few months.
