David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Wednesday, 3 July, 2024) What a delight to see you create this dramatic forced perspective aerial diorama! Years past had I begun something similar, albeit with Hasegawa’s 1:500th-scale kit of the IJHMS Akagi Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carrier (in checking, some sources report that Hasegawa’s kit was in 1:450th-scale, and a Fugimi kit was in 1:500th-scale), the Accurate Miniatures 1:48th-scale kit of the Douglas SBD Dauntless USN Dive Bomber, and the Airfix 1:72nd-scale kit of the same aircraft. I even had found a photo-etched set of the perforated dive brakes for the smaller æroplane replica, resolving for me the deeply reluctant prospect of having to cut and re-position the kit parts to combat mode, then rework them to open the dozens of holes, and to give them scale-thin accuracy. Is the Academy 1:48th-scale kit of the Douglas SBD Dauntless USN Dive Bomber a re-boxing of the Accurate Miniatures model? I had read/heard reports to that effect; it gratifies me immensely to see that such elegantly detailed kits yet remain available to us. I at first could not grasp what you had meant with “USN sad-2”. I finally realised that it is a typographical error of “USN SBD-2”. I am an excellent speller, though a mediocre typist; my making such mistakes drives me to fulminating exasperation! If I now had the means to build this display, I would start with Hasegawa’s 1:350th-scale kit of the HIJMS Akagi IJN Aircraft Carrier (Z25, HE40025 $180), as well as the aftermarket sets I have found (see below); even if one could not afford such an ambitious venture, one still can have some fun, if just wistfully, pondering what such a project would offer! This one also would include 1) Trumpeter’s 1:32nd-scale Douglas SBD-1/2 Dauntless USN Dive Bomber kit (02241). 2) Academy’s (Accurate Miniatures) 1:48th-scale Dauntless kit. 3) Perhaps two of Airfix’s 1:72nd-scale kits of the dive bomber. 4) A few of Brengun’s 1:144th-scale Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless kits (which may require backdating to the earlier variant); Yao’s Studio also makes 1:144th-scale kits of the nimble attacker. 5) A few of Trumpeter’s 1:200nd-scale Dauntless miniatures; the manufacturer produces sets of these for their three Yorktown-class USN Aircraft Carrier kits; they also make 1:350th-scale sets of the bomber (though I do not know if they would look right in such a display as this). I would include in each model the aviator and the radioman-rear gunner. As each flyboy prepares to release his ordnance, the yoke on the ventral surface swings down, to place the bomb well clear of the propeller. I would position the biggest replica starting its dive, the medium-sized model taking careful aim, even as withering anti-aircraft artillery buffets them, the two Airfix kits about to release their bombs, and the smaller of them just starting their climb as a huge, combined explosion urges them on their way . . . ! The aftermarket sets I have found for the Hasegawa HIJMS Akagi 1:350th-scale kit are: ● Detail Up Parts (40071, $219.99). ● Wooden Deck Detail Kit ($93.09). ● BUNKER Bridge 3D Print Set (IJN35150, $91.64). ● Refit For Hasegawa 3D Printed & PE ($170.99). ● Rainbow PE Boats set (17 boats) (Rb3606, $53.94). I would super-detail the two largest Dauntless kits, as well. Since I cannot do this diorama, I must ask you to give it a go!

I bought the 1/48 SBD-3 Dauntless from Academy and the boxart was of that scene with the Dauntless diving on the Akagi. Exact same position of the plane and ship.

Incredible effort & results. The Dauntless, a fun build. But, the carrier is a might tedious. Spectacular though in look. I also amaze over the true facts of Japanese anti aircraft fire that was color dyed per ship so each knew their shots from the others. Creating a spectacle in itself. Fun fact.

F22 should do the trick but to be sure blow up the pic and look at the edges. I would go with an f28 if you have the ability increase your ISO a bit and if need be increase your light. Now for realistic, use natural lighting and use a gold reflector for warmth. That should really give you a realistic look

Amazing creativity! Your weathering and detail work alone on the dive bomber and carrier models is impressive enough, but the ocean texturing and forced perspective photography to create the illusion of depth is commendable. Great job, keep it up! 👏🏽👏🏽

  • @brianbull5936

Very impressive! I’d never have considered egg carton material to create the water effect, and the spinning propeller, cotton, resin, and photographic background all make for a compelling dioramic presentation! Can’t wait to see your next creation!

Impressive job, just 2 things that bother me: 1) The plane is flying without pilots :) 2) If the dauntless is dive bombing, the bomb rack should swing out so the bomb clears the propeller when it drops. (Maybe you mentioned this in your video, I had to watch it with sound off...)
