OOh - I've always wanted to hear this. I helped out as an assistant to the producer, my friend Robert Sher, when they were recording the orchestra in Seattle several years ago. I doubt my name made it to the liner notes. But if you happen to see the name "Mark Finley" - that's me. But I doubt it. Interesting show to say the least.

One thing I am confused about is where they got some of the photographs for this, especially for characters that don't exist. The musical is based on a true story but not all of the characters are real people. Frankie, for example, is an amalgamation of George and Vera Epps. They were siblings around Mary's age. George testified in court that he'd seen Mary on the trolley and Vera was reported in a newspaper as swearing vengeance on whoever killed Mary. The two were combined to create Frankie Epps for the musical, but the picture that they show onscreen isn't George. It's the same with Mary's coworkers- Iola, Essie, and Monteen weren't real people. They take the place of Grace Hicks's testimony in the real trial, but there are still pictures for them on the screen. I wonder who those people actually were and why the musical didn't use the screen to show the reality that they were inspired by. UPDATE: I did some research and looked around online for pictures and I found out who the girls are! At 55:44 the pictures of the girls are, from left to right: Grace Hicks, Helen Ferguson, and Monteen Stover. Monteen's first name was used in the musical (the girl in green) and her last name was given to Iola (pink). From what I can tell so far, Essie (blue) and Iola's first names weren't taken from real girls, but I guess Iola Stover was named that to reference Monteen Stover and have a first name that would fit the rhythm of The Picture Show better. I'll update again if I learn more about the other girls or about Frankie/ George

I think the picture was of George Washington Epps, Jr, who they used to represent Frankie because it would’ve been confusing to show Vera Epps when the character on stage was a boy. And the three girls shown on the screen during the factory girls song were probably just some of Mary Phagan’s coworkers at the time. They might not have even been questioned/testified. It probably just makes it less confusing for the audience if the people on screen line up with who is on stage if that makes sense

Went and saw this last summer with my Dad and this is pretty much the best production I’ve ever seen (I’m seeing Cabaret next week so I don’t know how much longer it will keep that award). I actually met Alfred Uhry, the writer of the show at an after show Q&A that me and my Dad were invited to. It was probably my favorite moment of 2023 even though seeing Oppenheimer on the big screen came extremely close. I’m planning on seeing it again in Minneapolis next year. I also met Alex Joseph Grayson before the show and it was great talking to him. My Dad was a bit hesitant to see this especially after the performance at the Tony Awards because of Ben Platt, but even he was blown away with the show after it was over. I would immediately in a heartbeat see this again and I’m glad this Slime Tutorial means that I can watch this for free. Although seeing it live is much better in my opinion.

Yeah it is a half-step lower. Idina Menzel’s big money note that she’s always asked to sing whether it’s in Wicked, Frozen, and Frozen II is normally an Eb5 and the note Jeremy Jordan sang here was a D5, so it’s a half step lower. Still a very impressive and difficult note for a tenor to sing in full voice.

Everything in this musical is so throughly thought out it’s just incredible. Someone already mentioned how in most of the “witness” testimonies Leo has different apparel and behavior but one of my favorite little touches is in “That’s What He Said” where Jim Conley is quite literally putting words into Leo’s mouth. It’s hard to see faces with this recording but Ben Platt (Leo Frank) is mouthing the lyrics alongside Alex Joseph Grayson (Jim Conley) and also mimicking his movements. It’s those little details that make this show standout. This is such an important story to tell and it’s so beautifully done in this adaption of the musical.
