We want more midwives?? Stop demonizing home birth, birth centers, and midwifery care of ALL credentials. And stop making access to midwifery education SO DAMN HARD. I know hundreds of midwives that are passionate and dedicated... but they have little to no preceptor access. Something needs to happen, and fast. Midwifery-led care needs to include Licensed midwives, CPMs, not only CNMs and CMs. Also, CMs are only approved in 5 states! And there are only a few schools that offer the CM credential. AND they make it damn near impossible to access financially. I don’t understand why we have all of this information, yet nothing is being done to change it. Dr Crear-Perry said it best - medicaid pays the OBGYNS the bulk of the resources and THAT is a huge problem. It needs to end. Low risk birthing people should be seeing a midwife as a first point of contact. They ARE the expert in low risk normal birth. They improve outcomes. How can we know this, and still continue on with the same inadequate care model??

Until we stop sending ALL low risk people to SURGEONS, things will not change. Midwife the whole system and watch how outcomes improve. Midwifery care is the way for the majority of people. Hands down. Those who refuse to see this are going to continue to contribute to our poor outcomes. It’s time to stop dancing around it.

Any system that doesn’t include midwives of ALL kinds, is lacking. CPM/LM need to be accessible for ALL. Anything less is just going through the motions.
