Repairing a Faulty Denon Minidisc Recorder from the 1990’s!
In this video I attempt to repair a vintage Denon Minidisc recorder I recently picked up on Facebook marketplace.
Cosmetically it was in lovely condition but it had an error message and wasn’t reading discs.
Watch me attempt to fix it and increase the price of its resale value!

How to Fix the MOST common reason for NO SOUND on vintage Technics Amplifiers

In this video, I discuss the repair this beautiful vintage Technics SU V65A amplifier I recently purchased to resell. Many of these late 1980's Technics amplifiers suffer with the same problem. It’s something that’s relatively easy to repair when you know where to look! FIXING a Marantz CD PLAYER that’s not reading Discs properly.

In this video I replace the laser mechanism in a Marantz CD 63 KI signature edition. This Phillips CDM 12.1 (or later variations of it, known as the CDM 12.2, VAM1201, VAM1202) mechanism was used in many Marantz and Phillips vintage CD players in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. It was even found in a few other makes such as some Technics players also. Replacing this mechanism is a quick and easy...
Sony Minidisc Recorder Not ejecting - EASY FIX!
Переглядів 6 тис.9 місяців тому
Repairing a Sony MDS JB940 minidisc recorder to resell. Although I got it for a good price, it wasn’t working when first turning it on, was making strange noises and had a disc stuck in the machine. Turned out it was the belt for the eject mechanism that needed replacing. A very common issue with these machines. Here is a link to a quality replacement: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224326436546?mkcid=16&m...
I had a Sony Mini-Disc player. It started making a rattling sound as soon as it was switched on and would keep ejecting discs. I scrapped it in the end. Shame because Mini-Disc was a brilliant format. I even had one in my car until it got stolen. As a result of this video, I have just bought another deck off eBay in full working order for £115.
little tip is slide a paperclip onto ends of ribbon cables to give your fingers better purchase on them when pushing them back into their sockets reducing risk of slipping & bending them.
That’s a great tip…thanks!! I will try that next time :-)
Pretty sure most MDs mini-systems (HiFi not walkman-style) I've had are direct-drive stepper motors with gears for eject - may be wrong but there's a lot of mechanical force involved during disc eject, more than I would have thought a belt could be relied on to apply, and the noise of soft-touch eject always sounds like a stepper to me.
Believe it or not more systems use a belt than don’t. Nearly every Minidisc system I’ve ever repaired used one. Even a relatively high end £500 Sony MDS JB980, that I sold the other week, had a belt that needed replacing. I actually have an another video on my channel showing me changing out one on a Sony Deck if your interested!
@@SonicSalvagex Wowsers!
Not sure why you'd need a stepper for that, just a regular brushed DC motor is all you need.
@@8BitNaptime Cheap as chips, accurate and the logic is simple.
@@Blitterbug A stepper is a precision device and needs a lot of electronics to power it. A DC motor needs none of that, perfect to drive the eject pinion. I mean feel free to point me to a service manual that shows a stepper motor used to drive the eject. For example, the Sony floppy drive with motorized eject used on Macs uses a DC motor. I see no reason for a stepper in this application. And a floppy is bigger than a MD.
Any idea why my same model cd player won't play until it warms up?
I would say probably most likely failing capacitors or cold solder joints on the board.
@SonicSalvagex Thank you! Repairable?
@AdrianPoole-e1l Almost everything is repairable. It’s whether it’s cost effective to do so that is the real question. If you are unable to do the work yourself, then the time you pay for someone to do it for you (and parts) it would in most cases be cheaper just to buy a new player ( as in another 2nd hand similar one) at this sort of price level.
I am glad you (briefly) mentioned cleaning the lens. I have just fixed this exact model with the same problem, and *that was all it took* !! Anyone reading this: please *try cleaning the lens first* before carrying out anything more drastic like completely replacing the transport. I dread to think how many of these beautiful looking and sounding players have ended up in landfill because of a couple specks of dust on the laser! I found mine in the recycling bin with AC cord chopped off.. very glad to have saved it.
Yes it’s so true. More often than not when a cd player is not working, it’s a simple fix, like the lens needs cleaning or it just needs a new tray belt! Glad you saved your one!
@@SonicSalvagex Cheers mate!
This worked well for me, thank you.
Glad it helped!
BRILIANT - FIXED IT THANK YOU
Thank you so much for this...had the exact same issue, ordered the part, followed your tutorial and my Marantz CD1020 is playing discs like new again :) Thank you!
That’s great. So glad I could help.
This is the video I need, however, how did you get the disc out, I think that part was edit out? I cant remove the disc to change the belt?
I found it, there is a iittle white sled you push forward from the back
I was about to reply saying that! Glad you found it and hope you managed to fix it ok.
Could you do a video on how to replace the laser diode in a Matsushita CR-571-B/CR-572-B CD-ROM drive?
Would love to, but unfortunately, I don’t really do computer hardware I’m afraid
@@SonicSalvagex Not a problem. Over the Christmas period I figured out not only how to disassemble and reassemble a CR-571-B/CR-572-B but I've also learned how to troubleshoot and fault find every component in the CD-ROM, including how to repair chips on the circuit board. It's a wonderful feeling!
hola, tengo el cambridge audio cd10 y la bandeja como que se atasca al salir, cómo puedo arreglarla? gracias
Hey. Sounds to me like you need to fit a new tray drive belt. That is most likely the problem.
I failed to fix it. If you have this deck then try to get at the belt from the front slot first. ONLY if you can't then it looks pretty simple to lift up the lid as in the video. This is where I went wrong as the top came adrift. I then wrecked the floppy thing that sits atop of the disc. Game over. Solution was to buy a 2nd hand deck on eBay. This is a VERY FIDDLY JOB.
It seems you have eaten something delicious before recording the video 😋😋
SUDDENLY a seal takes over the mic ... hahahha goood.
You certainly got a bargain there as that deck looks pretty immaculate. Glad you emphasised how careful you need to be when you start lifting and prodding at the mechanism. I found that to my cost when I managed to somehow break the laser reader when I was replacing the belt on my JB 980. Worst thing was that I had done the belt and was just trying to fasten the thing up again. Sickener, but I somehow managed to find a whole replacement drive on ebay so it was then just removing one unit and replacing the whole thing. That was a few years back, and now the belt needs replacing again, so I will be very, very careful this time ! Good tip about maybe oiling the other bits you pointed out. Thanks very much and good luck! I expect you sold that deck pretty easily after the repair!
Great video, I’ll now try it on my JB-940 which plays, and does everything except eject the disc.
You can usually slice through the glue with a scaple or very thin and sharp knife blade the glue is there to prevent ent things coming lose during transit in containers from the far east so not really necessary to replace it 😀
That makes sense. Thought it might be something like that but haven’t seen it on any other models in such quantity!
@@SonicSalvagex I took apart a Ruark R1 radio ( an expensive model) to repair a couple of weeks ago and every connector and pretty much every component that was not a chip was glued with tons of the stuff and it makes life very difficult.I used to work with this type of stuff many years ago and this was not such a problem but as all the boards are made in the Far East and shipped to Europe, a long journey I fully believe that they have had issues with failures due to vibration causing loose connections hence the glue.
Thanks man!!!
No problem!
I wish this video was up when I did my JB940. I found the Sony service manual, and did it the hard way. a £3 belt did the job perfectly though.
It's very helpful. Thank you!
Absolutely superb tutorial. Fixed my CD63 for just over £13. You are a star sir, many thanks.
So happy I could help!
That thing was rubbish when it was new...75 dollars or pounds...good luck...lol.
It sold within 24 hrs 😁
I cant believe that cambridge audio could market a product that is obviously cheaply made. The profit margins must be enormous.
Yes, I’m sure they are. They weren’t the only ones doing it either!
Thanks for the video . i have done similar repair on a NAD CD player and got the open close thing done , i am not a electronics person ,i thought i'd have a bash after watching YT vid several years ago .II got it working ok but upgraded to a audiolab 8300 3 years ago and gave the old NAD to the horse charity shop in Southend just this friday passed.
No problem, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m a big fan of audiolab. They make some very nice stuff.
It's like that because it was contract manufactured in China - they're all like this. The connectors they use are really poor quality and I can only assume the good ones are very expensive as they all seem to just use goop to nail everything down rather than spend the money on better ones. It's a sure sign of crap in my experience.
Very true. I repair and work on hifi from the the 1970’s and you can really see the decrease in quality through the decades. Sony was one of the worst. Their 70’s and early 80’s hifi equipment was fine engineering at its best where stuff was built to last. By the end of the 1990’s however, their cassette decks and CD players especially, were made of 95% cheap plastic and mass produced parts.
The labelling on the button is accurate though. It says "Open Close" and that's precisely what it does.
😂😂
I think the reason for the glue from the factory is to keep the connectors from coming loose during shipping and avoid initial returns or warranty repairs.
This looks extremly cheaply made. Don't know what the mrsp was, but it's not very impressive inside. Small transformer, etc. Nothing i'd buy.
Yes it’s a fairly basic low range model from Cambridge Audio. They did make far nicer ones. For the money this isn’t bad however and does sound surprisingly good…although that’s obviously subjective!
@@SonicSalvagex Yes, i did look it up. It sold pretty affordable indeed. You get what you pay for. It has a nice dac, it's got that going for it. One advantage: she has lots of room under the hood for installing usefull upgrades. Masterclock, seperating power supply lines for the dac, etc. I've done this with lots of cd players, with stunning results. This could be a great candidate for tweaking, and getting highend performance. It's limiting factor is the very small transformer, which does limit the size of the soundstage.
Wow you seem to really know your stuff on CD players! I have a good basic knowledge of fixing and repairing most hifi equipment… but I’m certainly not a specialist or expert in any area. May sound like a silly question, but would it not be possibleI to upgrade the transformer relatively easily?
@@SonicSalvagex It depends on the voltages used. If a higher VA version is available for that used voltage, sure. The problem with cd players is, that they mostly use a variaty of different voltages. Bigger replacements are not ready available, and then you have to be really creative. There is more gain to be had in reclocking, and seperating power supplies for the dac, etc etc. Also the output stage upgrading is important. I've done transformer swaps on preamps mostly, because there impact on sound is greater. And they mostly use a standard + and - voltage of the same value.
Hi, Great explanation but sadly the volume pot is playing up on mine. Gently turning left to right by small margins there’s a bit of crackling until you get both channels working and it’s quiet happy until you want to alter the volume - repeat process. From this I assume the pot is worn in certain areas. How easy is it to get a replacement and to swap out? Cheers Steve
Hi Steve May sound an obvious question, but have you tried a good squirt of contact cleaner right inside the pot? Then give the volume knob a good working back-and-forth 20 or 30 times at least. 9 out of 10 times this will fix your issue, but if it’s still doing it then yes, you may need a new pot. It’s not too difficult to change if you can solder?
Hi I have a graphic equaliser on a Blaupunkt car radio which i bought off Ebay. The lights on the equaliser only move up and down if i have the volume quit high. I increased the gain dial at the back which improved it a little, but i would like the lights to move up and down when listening to it at normal volume. Any ideas. Thanks.
Hi. I have to say car head units are not my speciality! Which model is it and I could have a quick look online to see if anything jumps stands out?!
Wirings you has bad set. Toutch rezistors!
Hi, not quite sure what you mean?
Technics!
Have the same Amp and one of my speaker output won't play, I hope your video help me solve the problem, and if it doesn't I thing will help many others, thanks for that step by step video love from Greece brother 👍🇬🇷
Do you know if this will be a similar process and part for the marantz CD-6005?
Iv broken 2 now trying to replace the rubber band on Sony long play mini disc players im gutted i have hundreds of mini discs to play and i can't use any mini disc as most my stuff is recorded on long play 20 years ago like a idiot 😢
I damaged my JB940 and found the whole ,mechanism to be extremely fiddly. It was toast but, like you, I have a lot of stuff on MD so I bought an exact replica on eBay. After the excitement of being able to play my MD's I gave recording some new stuff a go. Now I find it looks like it's doing all the recording with just one tiny exception - That is NOTHING goes on the disc. Gutted !
Thanks. I'm hoping to be able to repair mine - exact same deck and exact same problem. Somebody on here said why bother ? I love the sound of my minidiscs and love this deck so am really hoping I can fix it.
Thanks for this video, may be in the next months i will do the same in my CD-43 Marantz.
Great job & great video👍
Hey Sonic Salvage. Have a 67SE that had the very issue described in this video. Ordered the new mechanism and followed your video. Same as a previous comment, this was the best “how to” video and was super simple to follow. I actually enjoyed the narrative as well, quite entertaining and thanks for not making it boring.
Great video thanks.
Thanks really appreciate that! Got some more coming soon!
@SonicSalvagex My marantz was skipping, but I just took it apart as per your video and cleaned all the gunk. Worked a treat, for now. If I do ever need to replace the laser mechanism, have you any concerns about the quality of those unbranded replacement parts?
Absolute junk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video, you took your time and got it done. I had a Sony MDS-JE520, purchased it from a guy for $50. Worked fine for a while, then it wouldn't turn on. Classic Sony issue. I am not a electronic guy, just know a bit to get buy. I never threw it away, i just kept it hoping one day i might get it to work or have it for spares. Then few months ago, i saw on Ebay a Sony JB920 Champaign Gold with the Original remote for sale by a Japanese seller for $250. I took a chance and ordered it. It works fine, however the display is sooo dim. I checked all the caps and the voltages and they are within the specs. I read that after sometime, the VFD just dies out and becomes dim. Never had that experienced in my life of VFD's. However, what i found was, most of the JE520 parts are compatible with the JB920, same mechanism, same VFD. Knowing how i hate to deal with old ribbon cables, i took a chance and replaced just the VFD segment from the 520 to 920. Many legs to de-solder and solder again. OMG, it works like a charm and bright as brand new. I even swapped the drive just to see if it would work, and it does, plays and records like brand new. Now i keep the mechanism as spares since the laser assembly and the write head assembly are hard to find these days. Just thought of sharing my story. Cheers.
Thanks
Nice
Such a cute dog
:)
Wow this was actually really helpful definitely subbing😊
Thanks!
Mini Disc in 2024 is pointless!! 🗑️
Apart from the sound quality for the money
I snuck my mini disc recorder into many concerts and got some good recordings that are still fun to listen to.
Just replaced the drive and laser on my old Marantz 53 using your video. All working perfectly again thanks to you! Yours was the best 'How to' I found online. Brilliant job. Thanks! 👍
That’s great to hear - thanks! I’m still a complete YT novice and that has made my day! So glad I could help.
I had one of them back in the day it served me well for many years before switch problems, pod problems etc...I just invested in a Denon Amp...
