Bikepacking Solo Hammock Wild Camp with a difference! 🌳 Popcorn Movie Night! #bikepacking #hammock
Movie night on a Hammock Camp Bikepacking Trip! Having bought a Hangtime Hook from Ridgeline Media Systems, I thought I'd try a movie night complete with Honey and Cinnamon Popcorn on my latest Solo Bikepacking Trip! I always enjoy a bit of camp cooking so as well as the popcorn on the MSR Pocket Rocket, I had Lamb Steaks with Mediterranean Couscous on the Bushbox XL Titanium woodstove.

The hardest part of any adventure is getting yourself Out of the Door! Almost all of us live busy lives, have other commitments, and have a limit to the funds with which to pursue the adventures we dream of.
But there are so many adventures that can be accessible to us if we just get Out that Door and make a start.
You don't need the latest and most fancy equipment, you don't need a huge bank balance, you don't need superhuman abilities and you don't need weeks of free time!
There are so many adventures, not far from where you live, that require only the most basic equipment and that may only take a few hours - the rewards of getting Out that Door are waiting for you!
Equipment I use (note - it's all good quality gear, but in most cases not the most expensive option; fun doesn't need to be super expensive!):

      @outthedooradventure 5 днів тому

      As I said in your comment on my other video - the method used is suited to the application I'm suggesting. The resulting splice is free of twist. It is a locked Brummel splice, just not lockstitched - which for my requirements is not necessary. Samson Amsteel is used for an array of tasks including huge ships hawsers and in climbing for zip lines and similar where any slippage could have dire consequences. Here, I'm showing a simple splice that is ideal for hammock camping (the central focus of my channel). It's deliberately an easy to execute method - not a technique to get absolutely maximum strength out of the resulting splice. As used in hammock camping, the Amsteel is never loaded to anywhere near even half it's breaking strain.

    I don’t really want to be the one to write this but so many comments are this as a good demonstration of the right way to use this kit.🫣 I’m adding here that I am sure your intentions are good.😬 However; stove on the tarp - risk of melting/fire - sitting with (bare) legs round the cooker - how is that good practice? - pushing down the aeropress at arms length is dodgy let alone while leaning over a burning stove that has hot fat in it I don’t need to explain this do I? -topping up with fuel… tell us you let it cool right down first (top tip: carry two burners for continuity in heat…), cracking the egg on the edge of a hot pan wile holding it steady with one bare finger moving the whole kit with bare hands while it’s lit is asking for trouble. Then the washing up, what happened to leave no trace? What will the person camping downstream of you think when their water filter clogs with your cooking oil and egg waste? The creature in the woods may have been drawn in to the smell of the waste you dumped in the stream. I did say you’re well intentioned but buddy if you’re doing a how to video please do it right.

      I'm certainly not perfect, the seating position and tarp were largely to get a reasonable camera angle - and not quite how I'd usually do it - so in hindsight, probably not the best presentation. However, I wasn't a 'how to', more of my thoughts on the first use of the stove and the reasons behind my choice. I'm definitely not the person to follow for best practice - I learnt most of what I do in the 1980s when 'best practice' didn't have the same attention is has now.

My 27 has a non-stick fry pan from the time when they produced it with an attractive bright red outer. I also have the multi-disc and wouldn't be without it. You may find you get a lot less stick when you deduce the flame for frying. I recommend their triangular grid that fits in the windshield and allows for small diameter pans (e.g. coffee percolator). • @outthedooradventure
      @outthedooradventure 10 місяців тому

      The multidisc - which is the grey plastic disc with the holes in - goes between the frying pan and the rest of the pans and the windshield. I use it to replace the clear plastic disc that comes as packaging. The multidisc also acts as a strainer, a chopping board and can be put under the windshield to stop it sinking into snow! I find it generally really useful, but the fact it protects my non-stick frying pan is quite a big part of why I got it. Since this video the new trangia has had a good number of meals cooked on it and the pans are still looking good. I definitely had the heat too high for cooking bacon on this occasion though - 1/4 closed simmer ring is about right for bacon I've since found.

    Too bad they didn't also make a HA kettle. Would have been nice

      Yeah, definitely would have gone for a HA kettle if it were available.

    My big problem is my gear such as the underquilt, hammock and tarp, is too bulky! Simply doesn’t fit into small enough spaces in bags. May have to unfortunately upgrade my gear :(

      I've upgraded my underquilt to an Alpkit Cloudcover, which is superb. Check out this review: ua-cam.com/video/BaRPwtZWMro/v-deo.html Hope you have some great trips!

    I’ve only been using Trangia burners, since forever. I wonder why you don’t use a non stick fry pan with your order Trangia set? There is Titanium Trangia kit on the market and I have a burner that I bought with Evernew kit some years ago. I use that and the kettle too! In a one person system. I have far too many cook kits to be honest, but they don’t cost the earth really and I do enjoy using them. Thanks for the vid.

      The older trangia was bought second hand when short on cash in my early twenties, to replace a superb trangia my parents bought me as a child, that was stolen from my car. The set I had as a child had the old red non-stick frying pan. I treated myself to the 27-4HA now that I can afford the best (for me) Trangia. I really enjoy using the trangia system. I've not seen the titanium version though.

    If you git yerself a One Wind 11 foot or a Ridge Outdoor Gear 11 foot hammock you won't be happier

    • @outthedooradventure
      @outthedooradventure Рік тому

      They are both great hammocks - I've tried the One Wind and know of the ROG - but they are both significantly more expensive than the hammocks I used in this video. The video premise was 'best cheap hammock'. Both those hammocks are also relatively bulky compared to the DD superlight, so whilst very comfortable, not great for the type of bike packing I usually do.

    Trangia cook sets are pretty nice. Especially in windy conditions. I will say cooking with your legs wrapped around the cooker is a good way to ruin it end a trip. And careful with that tarp. Anyways I might get me a proper trangia set like that with the anodized finish. Safer and tougher.

      Valid points and probably not how I'd sit normally, but trying to get a camera angle that worked.

    Great video well presented. In place of your Trangia, I use a Speedster burner, much smaller and lighter and far more miserly fuel use. The burner also holds fuel and will not tip over spilling fuel thus lower fire risk. It does, however, require a pot stand made from cycle spokes and I have a rolled windshield inside the pot. Great for both long multi-day tramps and for the day-out brew.

    How warm is the Alpkit? Would you use instead of a sleeping bag?

    • @outthedooradventure
      @outthedooradventure Рік тому

      It's plenty warm enough for me in the summer. I use two of them in my hammock, one as an underquilt and one on top. In winter, I add a thin (rated to +10°C) down sleeping bag in temperatures down to -2°C. But in summer, just two Cloud covers are plenty warm enough in the hammock without a sleeping bag. Obviously by putting the lower one below the hammock it's not compressed by me laying on it as a sleeping bag would be, so it's more effective. Here's a video of me using it this way: ua-cam.com/video/urK8oaho4CA/v-deo.html

    ive replaced the prusik on my zing-it ridgeline with nama claws by nama gear. very functional and make clipping in faster.

      They look very secure! It'll probably last years, but I just don't like the idea of any of the metal claw type clips on the ridge line. I'd be laying there in my hammock thinking of it chaffing!
