The easiest way to make a handbuilt box - please read the video description for additional notes!

Notes! Pretend that: 1. I blended in all the seams really well with my finger, and maybe even reinforced with a blended coil. 2. I slipped and scored all the seams before joining 3. I handled the walls very carefully and didn’t bend them out of shape constantly 4. I did not pick up the box at all, or peel back my slabs like a bunch of Pokémon stickers… that would warp horribly! 5. I slipped and...

How to make your own firing stilts without wire
Переглядів 1,6 тис.8 місяців тому
Apparently you don’t need the high fire wire to make a stilt! Please note that the bigger the piece, the more of these little stilts I would use to distribute the weight better (and prevent fusion). The pieces I’ve tried so far have been small and flat, sort of like flat ornaments and jewelry type. I am going to keep experimenting with heavier pieces and will post updates, especially if somethi...
How to make diy clay handbuilding templates from paper cups
Переглядів 6049 місяців тому
Super easy! You can use all different sizes of cups, or just cut it down to the size you want. I like those small paper cups used for medicine or workplace water fountains for shot glass templates. Bigger cups are great for tumblers, or coffee cups (as opposed to mugs) - but remember there will be shrinkage! So maybe grab a slightly bigger paper cup than the eventual tumbler size you are going ...

Fixing that stubborn crack at the bottom of your vessel
What neophyte would put coffee in that work of art?!
Yes! I was so worried!!!
So u r a mechanical engineer, too?
😮 such patience! Im saving what little i have for my kids😂
Thank you!!❤
My pleasure! One note: the recent material changes seem to have made white underglaze more transparent. I now recommend using solid color white glaze - same technique, then cover with compatible clear. It seems to work well!
Good video giving an accurate overview of food safety. A few things to add as some one who had to be certified in food safety. "Food Safe" is a technical term that is different from country to country. To meet those requirements usually require a lab testing. You can still have pottery that is safe to use for food, but doesn't meet the requirements of 'food safe'. A food safe glaze doesn't mean food safe pottery, as mentioned in the video vitrification is a factor, but also the shape of the vessel itself determines food safety. Again lab testing is usually required. Lastly the "newer research" from the description update. If this is the one that I think it is, it doesn't prove food safety. First it isn't really research because it wasn't submitted to any scientific or industry journals. It is just an article that has a few bacterial samples. Second the person who did the article is a chemist and not a microbiologist or food safety expert in any capacity. In fact the results they show in the article are the exact results that would lead anyone with food safety experience to conclude that crackle glazes are not food safe. The showed that crackle glazes are not 'food safe' then just say, "See its fine!" And just as a final note. People used it for 1000s of years isn't a great argument for food safety concerns. People also didn't wash their hands for thousands of years. Increasing sanitation standards are responsible for decades of life expectancy increases. We know factually that these old less food safe cause higher rates of food poisoning and other issues. Humans are a hardy species that can survive a lot. That hardiness isn't a reason to justify using items that are less safe. They used them because that is all they had.
Thank you for your contribution 💞
Thank you!
My pleasure!
Cool
Thank you!
thank you!!!
My pleasure 💞
Really good video. Thank you! I am very careful who I buy handmade dinnerware for the all reasons you pointed out. Also I hope to be a potter eventually and I want to be as safe as possible as I have indolent cancer.
My pleasure. Some things are more scary than others, but given a choice of materials, every potter should err on the safe side for functional pieces 💞Be well!

Stunning artist. 🤘

Love your pottery vids!!!
The best explanation! Thanks <3
Gorgeous art work. Hope you’re feeling better.
Thank you! 😊
🤘
Excellent, easy to understand explanation! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your videos. They are always so helpful. I have learned so much from you, and I continue to do so with every new video you post. Thank you so much. Please feel better soon!
You are so welcome!
Hello. Can you mix glaze and underglaze together in the same piece?
Hi! Yes, as long as the underglaze is never put on top of the glaze (it will smudge and run). I use underglaze with clear or semitransparent glaze on top in my own work every day ☺️
super helpful!
So glad!
I bought from Amazon pasler underglaze.. And i don't know what are the steps required can you help me and correct me if I'm wrong. Clay..mug formed..dried in the room.. Bisque fired..Underglaze applied.. Dried..Clear Glaze applied.. Glaze fire
Sounds great to me!
Thank you, this is great advice
You're so welcome!
I recently did a pedestal bowl with leafy sculptural elements on the pedestal. Scared me to death, but I want to do another. I liked your advice.
That sounds so pretty! Best of luck with your second one! The more of them you do, the less stressful the process will be ☺️💞
How do you keep from breaking off little pieces before bisque firing? When I move my pieces, I always accidentally break something fragile off. Do you stick your hand inside the mug or something to move it? Just loading it into the kiln is dangerous for me. I have to admit, I'm not the most graceful person.
I’m making you a video! Hang on!
I have the same issue with the previous commentor. My piece looks fine after bisque fire, but it gets extremely warped after glaze firing. Thank you for the video! very useful
Feel better. 🤘
Thank you 🙏🏼
I think you could put the video on portrait so it’s full screen to see it better ty for sharing
During filming? Or is that an option on UA-cam when I post it? I know it must be annoying to find that little square symbol button to make it full screen every time, sorry about that. They make it so small, too.
I only watch on. Utube so it’s coming to me small if it’s on FaceBook I have no problem making it larger with the button but you have to choose how to post it on utube I assume. Most of the people I watch, are large not small, just a suggestion so we can see you better 😉
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Thank you for this!!
You're so welcome!
😂😂😂❤
A simple idea ...why did I never think of it 😂 thanks for sharing. I love your quick tips.
You are so welcome! Sometimes it’s the little things! ☺️💞
What do you think of creating the sculpture with polymer clay first (because tiny details are so hard on regular clay) then casting a mold of that THEN using regular clay on the mold? Thank you! ❤
You can absolutely do that, and I have done it! You don’t even have to bake it before pouring the mold as long as your silicone is fast setting 😎🙌🏻
Thanks so much!🎉
My pleasure! 💞
Thanks for sharing Tania! I would love to see how you created the design on that mug. It's spectacular!
Thank you so much! I actually already have that tutorial - scroll down on my channel until you see a video called “sculpting trees from clay”! Let me see if I can post a link here for you, not sure if it will let me… ua-cam.com/video/oivV1iYmQN0/v-deo.htmlsi=4lwXpwTyzzQxNP8v
@@taniagoldbergpottery9953 thanks. I've watched that video and really enjoyed it. However, I would like to see how you created the skulls and flowers. They look textured, not just a transfer.
@@patspotpage oh yes! Absolutely. I make sprig molds and cast them in silicone, so I can mass reproduce them quickly. I don’t think I have a video on the skulls yet, but here’s one on making cacti and casting them in a silicone putty! If you look around my channel, there are tutorials on flowers as well as using liquid silicone (it captures more detail, which is great for delicate things like petals). Hi Tanya! Thanks for the demo!I tried this technique, its good but i get a lot of grog on the surface. Im using stoneware clay.Any advice how not to bring the grog so much up?😅
Ah, yes, groggy clays! Groggy clays don’t like water, it just exposes the grog. You have to take your rim and burnish it (a small spoon, or an oval river rock work well) when it’s just the right moisture level. You are pushing the exposed grog back into the clay body. It has to be soft enough that the grog can be pressed back into it, but dry enough not to be deformed by that pressure. You might have to experiment a bit!
@taniagoldbergpottery9953 Thanks so much Tanya 🙏
I believe you are using white earthenware ?Can you share please what brand? Thanks 🥰
Yes, of course! I currently use Kentucky Mudworks clays - either Iceman Stoneware, White Bear Stoneware, or Kota porcelain. I find them all to be wonderful. I’ve used Tuckers MCS and Bright White Porcelains before and they were also great! Unfortunately they don’t deliver to Florida, so I had to switch clays when I moved.
You are a very informative person! Well focused, no nonsense teaching. Love you!
Aww, thank you so much! I try! Big hugs! 🤗💞
So beautiful
Thank you so much
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Thank you so very much. I am making a small memory cremation box for my sweet DIL and her sister and this is perfect. ty!
I am so sorry for their loss. So glad to help in any way!
Yes, that's the biggest difference I've found. It dries quickly and sucks up water quickly! My current medium is Laguna frost. I love the translucency and the silky smoothness.
One of the most translucent mid range porcelains, I have it here too! Kota by KY Mudworks is really good too, it’s so plastic!
Thank you for posting this, and for busting some of the long-held myths of ceramics. I'm more of a wheel thrower, but have made boxes...albeit round ones! I love working in porcelain. Many people told me that it was so temperamental. But I find it just requires a slightly different technique in some areas. Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you so much! I love porcelain, and often have my students start working with it very early on. As soon as they can work a tad faster so it doesn’t dry on them right away ☺️💞
I really enjoy your videos and pleasant personality but have several issues. First you speak quickly but I am able to slow it down by adjusting the speed. The second issue I am unable to correct. The video uses only the center third of the screen. Is there a way to expand this view. Another problem is that it’s difficult to see a closeup of your work. While you are easy on the eyes, it would be helpful to see what you are doing. This was especially a problem in your video making the mug.
Thank you so much for the feedback! I am not a professional UA-camr, I only strive to share my knowledge, so it’s really helpful for me as I try to improve my videos. Talking at 100 mph (with an insufferable accent) is a known fault of mine, I will try to do better to slow down! As for expanding the view, yes! Do you see four brackets in the bottom right of your screen, arranged in a rectangle? It should expand you to full screen. I hope that helps!
Do you use underglaze? And a clear glaze over? So much detail!
Thank you so much! It’s underglaze wash off, then underglaze, then all different colors of celadon glazes!
I wheel throw and let sit for 24 hours cover up
Ok, there we go! I wish I could pin your comment - hopefully folks will read it. Thank you!
Also if you make them with a higher firing clay they will last longer.
Yes, I’ve thought of that too! Don’t have any right now, but definitely would be an improvement. Great idea!
Neat! Did you bisque the kisses before using them?
I actually didn’t! Crazy, right? I did preheat for 2 hours (which I don’t ever do either glaze) so that they wouldn’t blow. They were literally leather soft clay when I put things on them! I think that I would have less “stuck” ones if I had a chance to bisque them first
