    I had one rough crossing. I was warned and took some seasickness pills and found a seat . All The restroom doors 🚪 were locked in an open position. The employees were rushing around with pails and mops cleaning up vomit. Some ladies staggered over to a nearby seat and I heard them talk about the friend they left lying on the floor somewhere on the ferry.

    Been there, done that. What the video can't capture is the sensation of such a massive ship seeming to lurch to an almost complete halt each of these waves crashes into it.

    The ol Interislander, used to go across 2-3 times a year, got my sea legs from those trips, some where nuts, remember running up and down catching zero gravity moments watching people spew and we were laughing, got hurt a couple of time's, I'd probs sook up now.

    In April 1968, my then new husband and I were returning from Lyttelton to Wellington after honeymooning in the South Island on the WAHINE overnight in extremely rough seas, an omen for what was to come in many ways.... and on many levels! The day we arrived home in the Waikato, one week later, came the news the WAHINE was down in Wellington Harbour in extreme weather conditions with the loss of 51 lives. And for the record, the marriage ended several years later after extremely “rough weather” too!!!

  • @ve7cbh
    @ve7cbh 2 роки тому

    I guess that qualifies as heavy weather for commercial ships / ferries. Real heavy weather is when the bow drives through the wave/swell and you have solid water over the bridge windows. I've been there while I was in the RCN and it was 'interesting'

  • @robertwatson818

    Windows on these ships are not strong enough to withstand a substantial wave yet the crew stand right in front of them--laughing--awaiting their doom. Videos abound of waves smashing in the windows on the bridge and drowning the electrics rendering the ship inoperable--in heavy seas. Why are these windows not reinforced against such events?

    I remember sailing from Lyttleton to Wellington only one week after the Wahine sank in 1968 Very rough overnight crossing Kids being sick and porters opening and closing portholes most of the night tipping out bowls of stomach contents We sailed past the Wahine as we entered Wellington in the morning. You could make out the top of the bridge breaking the water line and the slurry of oil in the sea. New Zealand's worst maritime disaster. The Cook Strait has long been known as one of the most dangerous bodies of water on the planet. Nick Australia

    In your own interest, I hope that the vehicles are inside the ship during the crossing (as with Norfolkline as on the Calais - Dover route) and are not exposed to massive salt water showers!

      This particular vessel has below and above deck stowage. It carts a lot of livestock up top. Hard to avoid spray in that weather
