Why Willie Mae Thornton Matters: A Multi-Media Book Panel
Music can be used to understand and communicate about social justice as it relates to food, agriculture, and the environment. Music can open the door for deeper understandings of inequity and justice in ways that step away from Eurocentric insistence on linear and written communication to teach, exchange knowledge, or debate. This event explored these modes of understanding and resistance through a multi-media discussion of Lynnée Denise’s 2023 book Why Willie Mae Thornton Matters (University of Texas Press).
The Food Studies Program, The Tishman Environment and Design Center, and the Food and Social Justice Action Research Lab (FJAR) at The New School were honored to host this multi-media panel event featuring author, sound practitioner, and DJ Lynnée Denise; artist, curator, mother, and producer Elissa Blount Moorhead; and Assistant Professor of Race and Media in the School of Media Studies at The New School Dr. Brittnay Proctor-Habil. The event was part of the Food Studies Program’s “Food, Foraging, and Social Justice” series and The New School’s Earth Month activities. It was also co-sponsored by the SexTech Lab and the Gender and Sexualities Studies Institute at The New School.
The event was moderated by Mike Harrington, Director of Sustainability Engagement at the Tishman Environment and Design Center, and Dr. Kristin Reynolds, Chair of Food Studies and Director of the FJAR Lab at The New School.

MARIANNE WILLIAMSON 2024 CLIMATE PLATFORM (HIGHLIGHTS) The United States needs a president who understands that incremental change - even bold incremental change in regard to the climate crisis - is not enough to stave off environ-mental catastrophe. As president, I will undertake a full-scale climate emergency mobilization effort, not unlike the kind of effort undertaken by the United States during WW2. Among other steps, the Williamson Administration will: 1. Expand investments to reach 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 or earlier. 2. Transition away from fossil fuel energy and halt all new fossil fuel projects. 3. Decarbonize all buildings by 2045 and all federally-owned buildings by 2030. 4. Create a specific heat pump program at DOE to expand the use of heat pumps. 5. Ban all fracking operations (oil and gas). 6. End all new oil and gas leases in federal lands and waters. 7. Ban concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). 8. Change the ratio of federal funds for highways to transit to 50:50. 9. Phase out the sales of new fossil-fuel vehicles by 2035. 10. Accelerate the production of Electric Vehicles and invest in charging infrastructure. 11. Put a price on carbon to pay for the external damage done by these fuels. 12. Restore our forests and oceans and promote sustainable agricultural and ranching practices. 13. Invest $17 Billion in the Global Climate Fund to begin the work of doing our fair share. 14. Ensure the creation of high-quality union jobs for workers affected by the transition. 15. Ensure that the U.S. military cuts emissions in half by 2030, and fully by 2045.

Tremendous lecture! K. Frampton is always a great speaker. Combining his critical regionalism chapter with Sola Morales´"weak architecture" approach signifies to him a way for a truthful practice of architecture. Demystifying the erroneous notion that - only new is good and old is not - and moving away from the software-generated building, instant photographic generic garbage still in vogue in universities, exhibitions, and media towards a more grounded, material-sensitivity, context-aware architecture.
