in a way they are the same movie. I saw them both and love them both. Heat is longer so that beats Thief. Never bored with either....even in retelling.
Brilliant film making and a great cast. I saw an interview with James Caan, a few years ago and he said this was one of his favourite movies and he was very proud of it.. a great movie..
Cinematic Brilliance! Nobody, I mean nobody knows how to combine acting, ambience and music the way Michael Mann does! Manhunter is another one of his masterpieces.
Oh wow. So I did a little calculation. I see in another scene that there are 10 uncut diamonds in one packet. Assuming they are only 1 (eventual) karat each after being cut, one can make an estimate of the current 2024 value of this heist. There were 3 satchels (we see) with uncut diamonds. All three had 20 packets. Each packet had 10 uncut diamonds. That's 600 uncut diamonds! Assuming each is one karat, (and they look bigger) at current price that is $1390 per un-cut karat. Or $834,000. The interesting thing is that you can see 7 more drawers of the same shape that may house more of the same and the scene shifts before he can look at those. If they also house the same then 10 compartments housed $2,780,000 in today's dollars. And that only assumes one karat each at VS1 quality.
No gimmickry. No CGI. No quick jump cuts. No exaggerated sound effects. No bombastic symphonic music. No rapid fire dialogue. Just pure atmosphere and artistry.
I'm sure many are sick of hearing about Grand Theft Auto V at this point so I apologize in advance, but I gotta say... while Rockstar Games clearly based it on elements of Thief as well Mann's Heat, Tangerine Dream absolutely followed suite by scoring the game based on their own score from Thief here. Having played GTA Online for so long, I turned off the in-game music to listen to other stuff (mostly synthwave playlists), but I'd straight up listen to this very score. We wouldn't even have the best song in the game, 'Dead Man Walking' (used in the single player's morgue sequence and resampled in the online), without the blissful 'Diamond Diary' and 'Scrap Yard'.
So good all round. The 80's feel, lighting, the rain in the alley, car is barely visible, awesome searing soundtrack, just gripping with only a few words, this crew had it nailed down tight. Best of it is wee can still make movies like this but nobody seems to want to. This is an absaloute classic as alot of michael manns films were. Had that edge. Genius of film making. R.i.P Jimmy caan. Had something about him in his prime. Made viewers want to watch.
RIP, James Caan. Coming back to this after hearing the news about James today. What a performance from him. Plus, Mann's use of Tangerine Dream's "Diamond Diary" in this scene is absolutely sublime. For me, this is one of the best and most raw scenes to be put down on film, ever, and the music just makes it that much better. Watching James crack that safe real-time is pretty damn incredible. I’m a Tangerine Dream whore, so I know I’m biased, but hell, what a piece of filmmaking, and what use of one of Tangerine Dream’s best tracks ever. The part where the garage door opens at 7:45 and the music starts to calm down is incredible. What an amazing cinematic moment and what great use of a Tangerine Dream soundtrack. The opening to this movie is the definition of “badass” and I can only wish I was as cool as the characters portrayed in this incredible movie.
Such an handsome and luxurious film to see in a Great Movie House. The small screen insults this effort. Swagger, tension, artistry, pacing, killer score. This 'opening' is almost a brilliant short film into itself...
Michael Mann has a gift in creating his crime dramas with anti hero characters, and an urban gritty realism that is a lost art in today's film making. most excellent film.
@@jorgmehring2660 Yep! Sad but it's true.. I'm not a fan of Michael Mann's scoring style but nevertheless his style is original and authentic. That is what really pissed me off
Whats better this or heat?

Love this movie growing up.
Coffee & Clips anyone?
They don't make'em like this anymore

Great film by Michael Mann
What a soundtrack!
Leaving DNA and hair evidence all over the place. It was different doing scores in the late-70s, early 80s.
This scene epitomizes what it's like the be in the zone. Also the scene where Lou is going over footage in Nightcrawler
Few movies as Bad Ass particularly this opening.
Cinematic Brilliance! Nobody, I mean nobody knows how to combine acting, ambience and music the way Michael Mann does! Manhunter is another one of his masterpieces.
Top Gun and this movie best opening scene for a movie
I notice he ignored the jewels and only took paper packets. What did he steal?
Loose diamonds.
He's an expert. He doesn't need to be carrying 'loose shit', both in terms of quantity and quality.

Today, Gen Z would see this scene and think "It's taking too long!"

The way this score is used in s2e7 of The Bear makes me so happy. Hopefully it gets people to watch this Chicago masterpiece.
When this movie was released in the Cinema the whole place was deadly quite, nobody was talking over this masterpiece ! No Mobiles either..
Those were the days before you saw herberts at the cinema going on their phones during the film.
Masterpiece.

Michael Mann + James Caan + Tangerine Dream = goosebumps 👌🤘
What a maniac, I love her!🙃
Maybe the most exciting movie ever made.
GTA
🔥 🎥 🔥
High line pro
An erotic fight scene that leaves men scarred.
bon film ! ...bonne ambiance de truand$ !
One of my all time favorite movies...a true classic from 40 years ago.

I wonder if HEAT is a sequel. With Val Kilmer playing the adult adopted baby from Thief??
He'd only be 14. 1981-1995.
Actually insane that this soundtrack was nominated for a golden raspberry...
Really? Thief and Manhunter sound should have gone to the Oscar nomination.

what a bad ass
സൗണ്ട്ട്രാക്ക് is 😍😍😍
CINEMATOGRAPHY AND SOUND BOUGHT IT TO LIFE
WHY I WANNA MAKE MOVIES. THIS IS THE FILM THAT DID IT. ONE OF THE BEST.
Masterpiece
I loved this character Mona, she was ruthless. Actress Lena Olin had fun portraying this character. Date Stamp: 14june21
