Collector and admirer of mechanical music instruments from the early days. Here you can find high-quality recordings of orchestrions, band-, barrel- and fairground organs and all other mechanical instruments. Also featured is my 1928 Hupfeld Animatic-Clavitist orchestrion with which I try to upload a broad variety of different rolls.
Tangled Tunes - Universal Roll: S-7914
Here's a really fun one: "Tangled Tunes" by Albert Ketèlbey includes 107 songs in a massive medley. It was first recorded in 1914. Sadly this roll is torn towards the very end, which I'll try to fix.
Roll Title: Tangled Tunes
Composer: Albert Ketèlbey
Roll Number: S-7914 (Universal)
Piano roll played on a 1927 Hupfeld Animatic-Clavitist orchestrion. Besides the special orchestrion rolls it can also play the standard 88 player piano rolls thanks to a small lever in the spoolbox.

Weber 'Solea' Special Orchestrion - Part 1
Переглядів 49928 днів тому
Here's a Weber orchestrion you don't see every day. This 'Solea' was specifically built for the owner of the Café Le Fribourgeois. The main room has a lower ceiling so the orchestrion has a specific case with two moving pictures, a piano in the middle, pipes on one side, and the drums and xylophone on the other side. The name is carved into the center piece. 0:00 - Mon Paris 2:48 - Wenn der wei...
Weber 'Unika' Orchestrion

A fairly small Weber orchestrion consisting of an overstrung piano, 28 violin pipes with vibrato, and swell shutters. Made to represent a small duet of violin and piano. 0:00 - Wilhelm Tell Overture 9:47 - Hier Schlager, wer dort? Potpourri
Popper 'Welt-Piano "Roland"' Orchestrion - Gott sei dank, heut hab' ich blau gemacht!
Переглядів 445Місяць тому
Certainly one of my favorite orchestrions ever created: Popper's Roland. A real Swanee whistle played during the song, scarcely used though since it could quickly sound irritating. The song sadly cuts out before the end. I do not own the rights to this recording, nor to the pictures. These are not uploaded for commercial use, only to spread the joy of mechanical music.

This is one of two known existing Philipps orchestrion using the P.E. rolls. Up to this day it's unknown what 'E' stands for. These smaller keyboard-less orchestrions had a piano with a tremolo mandolin, violin pipes and a smaller set of drums. 0:00 - Coronation March 3:40 - ??? Popper's 'Welt-Piano "X" Luxus 6' Orchestrion

High quality recording of a rare instrument. This Welt-Piano X Luxus 6 is the only existing one in the world. Including an overstrung piano with mandolin effect, a visible xylophone above the spoolbox which lights up while playing, orchestra bells and a variety of drums (bass and snare drum, cymbal, timpani effect) 0:00 - Sentimental Journey 1:38 - Heart of my Heart 3:09 - Bitte recht freundlic...
Hupfeld 'Phonoliszt-Violina' Orchestrion
Переглядів 242Місяць тому
Three real violins, one piano. The "eighth wonder of the world" was first sold in very small numbers around 1908. Only after a music fair in Leipzig and the World's Fair in Brussels (1910) it took off, and became a major success. Today it's among THE most famous orchestrions in the world. A couple thousand were made, and less than 100 are still around. 0:00 - Ilona 2:47 - Santa Lucia 4:37 - Ich...
Hupfeld 'Sinfonie-Jazz (Modell 9)' Orchestrion - Part 2

The Sinfonie-Jazz was one of the most popular instruments by Hupfeld in the late 1920s. Several variations existed but this here is a Model 9: excellent piano with mandolin attachment, accordion reeds as a saxophone or tango accordion imitation, foxtrot bells and percussion consisting of bass drum, snare drum, woodblock, triangle, Charleston cymbals, and a large cymbal. 0:00 - Amazulu 2:26 - Ic...

Beautiful!
This was a medley of, like "everything, all at once" - Is it a demo roll or something, with samples, of what you could buy to play on your piano?
No, this was an actual tune written by Albert Ketèlbey. It was intended to be like this, as medleys of that sort were very popular.
I've always enjoyed this. I have it as a MIDI file from a scanned player roll. Does the roll actually list the songs? I'm guessing not, as its probably more entertaining to be surprized. I hope you're able to patch it up at some point. Thanks again for sharing! I love your channel!
This is very similar to " A Musical Switch" and "The Lightning Switch" by Kenneth Alford who did exactly the same thing with many popular tunes, several fair organs over here in the UK have them, must have been a popular thing years ago to see how many different tunes you can get in a medley.
Everything Must Go!!
Beautiful! 😊
I have to say, the elves gave this Christmas tune the spark of holiday magic and playful! Good call!
Nice post! I have Seminola on a Jewel roll. I noticed you have the lock on the keys. Just curious?
Thank you! The keys on many Hupfeld orchestrions or player pianos are stationary. They mostly sold to Europe, where the moving keys were not a standard but an additional feature you had to pay a lot for. So many people just didn't pay for it or care for it. My instrument originally was built in Germany for the UK.
@retr0la That is fascinating! I had no idea they were stationary like that. On my piano (1914 Smith & Barnes), there is a little lever under the keyboard I can pull and it locks the keys. I really don't know why that was a feature but it does help the piano play rolls with a lot of tremolos better to lock the keys. You inspired me.... I'm posting my Seminola roll now. I've also subscribed to you! I love discovering other piano enthusiasts.
starting at 12:10 sounds like Sleep Waltz, at least that on Come to the Fair Old Time Wurlitzer Carousel Music Vol. 2
Also want to thank you very much for all your descriptions, and the song titles! I've been trying to trace down some of these carols for quite a while now! Always enjoy your videos. Thank you!
Wow! Just wow! I can't believe how much went into one of these! I never heard it play pop tunes before, but it does quite well. I wish I could have heard your original recording, but I'm glad you at least have this one. Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful! Thank-you. 🙂👍
What a fine example of a Hupfeld Helios! Thank-you for sharing this recording. 🙂👍
What a marvelous masterpiece!
Cafe Fribourgeoise, Bule. Go there and have music with your meal!
Magnificent instrument
je connais bien cet instrument.
Every time I hear these machines and their xylophones, I can't help thinking that no one ever used their's nearly as well as Webber! And, yes, curious piece! Thanks for sharing. Love it!
Less is more! Who needs percussion?
There is also a mandoline effect, Weber must have made a lot of this model as many still survive today.
thank you , its got a fairgound organ sound to it , and plays very well
My compliments for the recording of this LP, sounds wonderful, you did a great job!!
"Was macht der Maier" sounds very similar to "Drei Musketiere" but it is not the same tune.
splendid
Hi retrola do you have more of the weber maesto music of yes can you post agian pls thank you😊
What a great track list, I love these two rolls!
This orchestrion is BEAUTIFUL. It works excellently! It looks kind of like a Wurlitzer 157 facade. Maybe partial inspiration for Gavioli??
Beautiful and very rare orchestrion! As far as I know, only two or three of these survive: 1) This one in Zagreb Croatia, formerly part of the Ivan Gerersdorfer collection 2) Yaffe Collection, United States, originally discovered in Giornico, Switzerland in the 1970s 3) A third instrument possibly exists in the Wendel collection in Rüdesheim, Germany The scale is unique in that every instrument has its own solo track. There are 29 piano notes, 17 mandolin notes, and 25 violin notes.
And not only is this recording excellent, but this instrument is so far the best of these I've heard, and in best playing condition. These were wonderful instruments, and their music arrangers were excellent too. Thank you for sharing!
Mooie melodie maar geen beweging
Amazing high quality recordings! Among the best I have heard!
Fun!
Hi! I love your channel! Thank you for all that you share. I'm a bit confused by the title. Was this built by Popper and Welte, or is welt a model or style name? And you mentioned Popper xylophone. Are you describing the entire instrument, or did they actually make their own xylophones? I never knew there were so many vinal records made of these things. Thank you again very much.
@@SuperUtterChaos This instrument was made by Popper. "Welt-Piano" was only the name of the line of orchestrions. It means world in German. Probably to make it sound more fancy. I was talking about the xylophone included in the orchestrion, they did not make or sell standalone xylophones.
I also love how these arrangers don't just use everything all at once all the time, but use the various instruments very juditiously. Very nice! Thanks again.
These must have been incredible machines when they were new. And their still are! 🙂👍
extraordinaire roller piano !!!
would've been nice to see a video of the workings and the accordion movement.....
If you search for Arburo organs, there are a couple videos of this exact instrument. This is only an audio recording taken from an old vinyl record.
The second tune is "Drei Musketieren" (Three Musketiers), the fourth is "Tiroler Holzhacker Bub'n" (Tyrolean Woodcutter Boys)
The one in the mallorca collection sounds a little bit different. It must be another one. I have heard it just this week ;-)
@@TimFischer-gu9gq The Lucia you hear in this recording used to be located in a small private collection in Germany at the time the recording was done. I don't know where it went afterwards, I was told the collection was at some point sold.
Wonderful!
Das Lied 3:22 ist Morgen Kinder wird's was geben
Beautiful instrument! I believe the one we are hearing is currently in a collection in Mallorca. I know of one other Gothic case Lucia besides this one in a US collection, incomplete and unrestored. The one we see here has the later Art Nouveau case variant and is currently in the museum at Les Gets, France.
Could you please reupload this orchestrion playing "Die kleinen Mädels im Trikot" ?
This is a very lovely instrument! I love how the arrangers use all the tonal resources so nicely. Thank you for sharing this.
Nice. A video with the actually working violin would be the ultimate tribute to this late Popper instrument, don't you think ?
Unfortunately this orchestrion has been unplayable for several years now.
Limonaire 66 touches de l'ancienne collection Marc Fournier.
Fantastic! What a nice rich sound this organ has!
Wonderful!!!
absolutely splendid. the highlight of my week
Catchy little tune! I wish more was known about it!
Hallo.Wie heisst der Titel?Von Wem ist er
The song is called 'Rubinstein's Two-Step' and is based on Melody in F Op.3 No.1 by Anton Rubinstein reimagined as a twostep.
That was marvelous
