Are you afraid of spiders? Well that's just too bad because this episode is stuffed with them. It was filmed before the influx of fall migration birds thus you won't see any new bird faces, but there was no shortage of insects and spiders etc.
Speaking of spiders, this episode's "host" Jumping Spider was filmed...almost upside down, under a handrail. Keep that in mind as you watch him stumble away. The scorpions were filmed last year but I didn't see a way to use the footage until now. I didn't see them again this year.
Special thanks to Photographer "Ryan S." for pointing out the Grizzled Mantis! They are ridiculously hard to find. If you do find one in the park please leave it where you found it.
As always, many thanks to the park rangers. Keeping people and animals safe can be challenging. Also thanks to the photographers and visitors who share their stories, experiences and love of wildlife.
--------
For those new to the park, here are some things to consider;
Do not approach the waters edge and watch your step always.
Leave the pets at home (service animals only).
Do not feed or harass the animals. Don't leave things they can eat.
Carry your trash to the bins (you'll save money with reusable water bottles)
Before you start your car, ask your self, "Am I forgetting something?". We have TONS of sunglasses.
Do not pick up animals like snakes without a permit (check with Park Rangers).
No fishing.
Don't let toddlers wander out of your sight! The park has many hazards, not just alligators.

Music Credits; Track 1 "The Centurion" By Jon Ong www.jonongmusic.com Track 2 'Sanctuary' by Scott Buckley - Released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au I had some reservations posting footage of the osprey-bald eagle battles in the previous episode where technically it chronologically belonged. At the time I didn’t settle on a music track, and I'm still not comfortable with quality of th...

We've had another mild Florida winter. This video shows some birds that I've filmed for the first time; the American White Pelican, the Northern Waterthrush (thanks to Stuart for pointing it out!) and the Yellow-Headed Blackbird which is not normally found in Florida. This is the first time I've actually seen one, but I knew they mixed in with the Brown-Headed Cowbirds from a UA-cam video poste...

November was a pretty month. Lavender and yellow flowers carpeted small patches of the park in forms seemingly random yet organized. Many of us were filming birds standing or sitting in blooms which churned out great pictures, great fun and the birds didn't seem to mind. December was more somber; rusty wilted flowers, lead skies, cold, wind and rain. This year, our flocks of Black-Bellied Whist...

“I don’t know how to paint …. so I use cameras” -Casey Neistat , Wired interview 11/2023. While I missed sightings of bobcats, coyotes, otters and bald eagles for September and October, I was quite busy filming the fall bird migration here at Sweetwater. Thankfully I saw some new characters and familiar ones passing through. It has been difficult identifying some of the new faces so I wouldn't ...

I’ll probably never forget the first time I heard and felt an alligators’ rumbling bellow during the breeding season. Conjuring in my mind the dying idle of a Harley Davidson or some medieval dragon experiencing indigestion, the growl can be particularly unnerving if you are unaware of the source. This May I once again found myself observing and filming Goliath, one of the largest gators in the...

There are a few live oak trees growing just along the service road that cuts through a wooded area on the north side of the park. A mature live oak is a majestic thing. Its exposed muscular roots leads your eyes up along an imposing trunk, splitting up to its stretching, curving until near horizontal branches that block out the sun. Standing next to one is to be in the presence of a living gian...

Arrive early to avoid the crowds and to get that early light. Walk or stand still. Look and listen. Bring binoculars, but it helps to arrive without expectations. You will see ....something, but not likely what you desire. Come empty, but receptive. Choosing one trail, will reveal something, yet you will miss opportunities elsewhere. Alas you cannot be in all places at once! Perhaps you are exa...

It is sunrise on a November morning in the wetlands park. Shoulder high stalks of yellow Goldenrod and lavender Asters start shedding their flowers exposing tiny seeds beginning to ripen. As the air warms up, the wind dislodges the white hairy seeds of the Groundseltree, which erupts in mass, escaping like dandelion spores into the wind by the thousands. Betwixt the shades of browning grasses a...

Forgive me for getting a little carried away with slow motion, but it is quite addictive. Most shots were handheld; the high frame rate tends to soften the effect of shaking hands while holding 8lbs of camera gear. Note for you camera geeks, the Z6 II will only film at 1080p in full slo-mo, and not cropped (only full sensor). But I'm no processional and this is adequate for my current needs. I'...

Fall migration was underway in September, with one of the first arrivals being the Kingfishers (look for footage in the upcoming October upload). This video has my first glimpse of a Yellow Warbler and the Semipalmated Plover. Enjoying the slow motion video from the Nikon Z6 II, while not as polished as the Z9's 4K resolution, slow motion breathes new detail into animal movement that I had prev...

Fortunately I managed to recover the Sigma 150mm-600mm from the broken DSLR and reuse it on the new Nikon Z6 II. What a relief. Hummingbirds were the highlight of July. Towards the end of August, the alligator nests started hatching so there were baby alligators and protective mothers everywhere. It was sweaty business waiting for those nests to open, but it was worth it. The Nikon Z6 II is a p...

June. First the good news. After seven month of tracking scat, footprints and glimpses, I finally filmed the bobcat, caught up with the pair of great horned owls whom I haven’t seen in months. Also filmed a water moccasin for the first time (video). And now the sad news; two members of the crane family were hit on the highway outside the park around the end of June. I uploaded the last clips I ...
