Irrigation at last. I've been waiting to do this for a few years.
I've been wanting to drain extra water off the pond for years. Using a bunch or surplus equipment I had laying around, we put together a irrigation system or the garden. The nutrient rich water will really help.

Extremely Nerve Wracking

Turns out Kata and Eden were not the only ones that were expecting to have baby goats this kidding season. Myna had to join the party. However, she was much smaller than the other two and we weren't sure she'd be able to go through it. Connect with us on Facebook! twintiershomestead/

Baby Goats

Amid the Coronavirus mess, 2020 kidding season is here in late March to bring some joy. It started a week before we expected and did not unfold the way we thought it would. Lillyana did much of the filming and did a great job. I think the kids learned a thing or two from the experience. We hope you enjoy and if you do give us a like and share with others. My Premier1 electric netting almost killed our young doeling Myna and now I'm done with it.

Nearly one of the worst days on our homestead. I believe we were under a minute away from Myna dying. Going forward, I'm no longer using Premier netting for my goats. It's just not worth the risk. Connect with us on Facebook! twintiershomestead/
Chips Anyone?
Переглядів 164 роки тому
We unexpectedly had a load of wood chips given to us. This was great because we like to use them for deep bedding in the chicken house. Unfortunately, a storm approached so we had to race and try and move what we needed into the checking house before it started to rain. Did we make it? Watch and fine out. Wood and Worms

We generally have old lumber that has come from one project or another. A few years ago, we remodeled out kitchen and dinning room, removing the rustic looking wood planks from the walls. We are going to now use those to turn our screened porch into a sun room. This video is the first step in reclaiming those. At the end of the video, we check in on our composting worms. How did the homestead fare while we were on vacation?

We were off to Hawaii for nearly the entire month of August visiting Karen's family. It was a great time as always, but it was good to get back home to cooler weather and to sleep in our own beds. We have a lot of things to get caught up on including more pool woes in this latest video. Will it ever end? Connect with us on Facebook! twintiershomestead/ Music: Staying Positive by Ja...

New Stall Bedding
Переглядів 535 років тому
We initially tried straw in our stalls, but it didn't really work out that well. The goats went to the bathroom on it a lot. The stalls have rubber padding over top of concrete. The straw, rubber padding and concrete all absorbed the smell and it was terrible. So, we looked around and decided to try pelletized bedding. Check out how it works. The netting didn't almost kill ur goat. The netting is an inanimate object It doesn't kill anything. . Your goat almost killed itself. . Perhaps you have a suicidal goat. . Cuz that explanation is just as stupid as saying that the netting tried to kill your goat

    Great soil blocks. I have found you have to be careful making soil with straight compost. I usually mix mine with potting soil.

    • @twintiershomestead3097
      @twintiershomestead3097 5 років тому

      Thanks! Our first time using a block maker. In some cases we mixed in potting soil and other times I simply forgot because of the quality of the soil. I'd agree we wouldn't want to use straight compost, but in our case, the compost had been broken down for about a year. The part I forgot to show was how I scooped it up from the ground in our garden and then sifted it. So far, everything has been growing great in it. If the weather is okay this weekend, or early next week, we should be ready to transplant to the garden.

      Do you freeze the entire egg including the shell or do you crack the egg and freeze the white and yoke? We've not tried to freeze eggs before but it might be something we are interested in to offset the lower production during the long winter. Do you happen to have a video where you step through it? Thanks for the tip!

    • @CanterburyTrailsFarm
      @CanterburyTrailsFarm 5 років тому

      I should do a video on it! No, I remove the shells. I usually scramble and freeze. You can also de-shell and then put an egg each into ice cube trays and freeze. Or just do the egg whites that way and scramble the yolks and freeze. But, for chickens, you probably want the shell.

    • @twintiershomestead3097
      @twintiershomestead3097 5 років тому

      Yeah, you have to try it and let us know if you have the same luck. We believe it's definitely a better and cleaner options for farm fresh eggs that can have stronger shells. We were about 25 minutes for 2 doz eggs. So, that may work out to 1 minute per egg. However, there is probably a minimum time regardless of the number of eggs. Not sure what that number would be. Maybe 15 minutes. I'm curious to what your experience is.

    We get jicama every now and then. We usually julienne it and add it in our slaw or just eat it raw alongside peppers and carrots, but seasoned with salt, pepper, olive oil, and various herbs.

    • @twintiershomestead3097
      @twintiershomestead3097 5 років тому

      This was our first year using one. We've used seed trays in the past, but with mixed results. This was also the first year we had a good mix of compost to work with. I will say we bought the larger and small block maker from Amazon. We are satisfied with the large block maker, but haven't used the small one. We tried it, but the blocks didn't come out so nice. We believe you need to have really fine soil to use them, likely potting mix. The large block maker is about $33 on Amazon.
