Sometimes even manufacturers with great track records can let something slip under the radar. I suspect that is the case with the pen you purchased. I also think that you bear some of the responsibility by not exercising your right as a consumer to have been sold an item in working condition. Perhaps that can be excused by you being new to the fountain pen hobby but that's not my call. Warning to those who find themselves in a similar situation: Should you receive anything from a seller that doesn't work you should immediately contact the seller and start a return process. If the seller asks you to mess around with the item to get it to work you should refuse and demand your money back. If the seller refuses to send you a refund then you should contact the credit card company and dispute the charge but just make sure to save all your correspondence between yourself and the seller so that you can offer those to the credit card company for evidence.

I had an extra fine on a metro, and I liked it, but i lost the damned pen after a month, so I never really got to experience it. From what i remember it wrote great, that's why I lost it; it was so good I used to carry it with me because it could write well on any paper. I took the nib off of a kakuno ( whetever it's called).

I just bought a Duofold Junior and I really like it. If you think it's small, you should try the Slimfold, which is about the same length as a Sailor PGS, and half the width. 😂TINY!! Both my Junor and Slimfold are very, very smooth but the Slimfold is wetter. Crazy thing is, both of them cost me around £15 each, both in perfect working order (missing the cap jewel on the Junior), and thats for a working gold-nib, ebonite feed pen. What blows my mind is that those prices are not unusual. I see them on Ebay under £20 nearly every week.

It's next to impossible to have an acceptable writing experience from what is essentially a Western XXF nib, a size that was originally intended for writing fine prints in a ledger book and never was intended for daily writing. You should have gotten a FM or greater for a much smoother and much less finicky writing experience. Personally, I find Pilot nibs rather boring. Anyway, live and learn.

I especially like the Jaipur V2 ebonite models. They feel and look much nicer. Great nib. I agree that this is not a pen for traveling or loose pocket or purse carry. Use other pens with less fun nibs for that. As far air travel, Vacuum fillers are the choice. Fountain Pen Revolution sells their ink additive to prevent railroading, I assume by increasing surface tension. I haven’t tried it, but I’d recommend giving it a shot if you have an annoying amount of railroading. You add only a tiny bit to the ink you are going to fill with, maybe in an Ink Miser.

I have about 30 gold nib Pilots in my collection and they have some of the most consistent QC in the business. You may have been sold a defective model, rare but it happens, especially considering the leak and obtaining a replacement from the retailer would have been the way to go. I have several custom 74’s (opaque and translucent) in medium and broad nibs and they’re all great writers. Japanese nibs traditionally have a finer line than western nibs so I tend to go for medium or broad. I’d never get an EF in a Japanese nib because 1) I dislike the hard as a nail, sharp feedback type of writing experience 2) I prefer wetter, juicy writers. This is why impulse buys are not a good idea. Know your pen preferences, research the pen you want to buy and make sure it aligns with your preferences. I’m a medium broad nib person. I tried a FM nib (for variety) in the Pilot Custom 91 and I don’t like it because it’s too sharp and feedbacky for my taste. Now I know only M or B nib Pilots for me. If you have a pen club, pen show or brick and mortar store near you, try out the medium and broad nib Custom 74 before buying a new one. It’s such a shame your experience has been a bad one but trust me, when you get the right one for your preferences, that isn’t faulty, this pen is a great writer.

@@tehonlyFreeman Don't have a 74, never have, and not looking to get one. My comment is based on the simple fact that Pilot is one of the most consistent pen makers in the world. Accounts of defective or faulty Pilot pens are extremely rare. The video has such a negative tone that it makes me wonder if fountain pens are something the author should totally keep away from, as it sounds like he doesn't really 'get' them.

I have the white version of this pen. Same experience with leaks. Way too wet as a normal use pen. I even gave up storing it as a normal pen because it was leaking regularly. Now I just keep it as a desk pen for shimmering inks, while other pens clog with shimmer inks. Alway stored nib up, but even then, it still acts up once in a while and gushes into the cap. It might be temperature changes causing it. It would be interesting to see if it could be a carry pen with a regular nib and feed.
