1989 OBS Chevy Silverado Frame Repair & DIY Side Steps | ASMR | No Commentary
This video is a continuation, fixing up my dads old work truck. This 1989 OBS Chevy Silverado had its head gaskets replaced, along with some simple head work in the last video. This time around, I'm repairing a section of the frame that has become victim to rust. I'm not gonna say that this is the "Right Way" to do it, because I don't have much experience in this kind of repair. But my thoughts are good steel is better than no steel. My Dad is also getting older, and has a hip injury from a motorcycle accident from years ago, so he had asked me about a set of side steps. So I decided to build him a set from stuff I had kicking around the shop. I hope you enjoy the video. Like, comment, subscribe. Thank you for watching.

ASMR 1989 OBS Chevrolet Repair: Head Gasket Replacement | No Commentary
Переглядів 1,5 тис.21 день тому
This is my dad's 89 OBS 350 TBI Chevrolet Silverado work truck. This is the first of 2 repair videos on this truck. This truck has developed an issue where it gets bubbles in the cooling system, and pressure builds. I suspect the head gasket. I picked up about $300 worth of parts, gasket kit, bolts, odds and ends and fluids. I go inside, inspect, clean and reassemble. Flush the cooling system a...
FIRING UP a SBC that hasn't run in YEARS! How I store and ENGINE OUTSIDE!

A friend of mine picked up this small block chevy 5 or so years ago. I have aquired it off him for and up coming project. In this video I fire it up to make sure it's in usable condition, and go through what I do to store and engine outside until im ready to use it.
WILL IT RUN?! 1997 Seadoo GSX 787. Can we get it back on the water?
Переглядів 1,2 тис.4 місяці тому
In this video I work on an old jetski to try to get it back on the water. I go over how I got it, and the problems that I need to deal with. Working on this 1997 Seadoo GSX, I'll work on Carburators, battery, exhaust and few other things. I'm not really a boat guy, I usually actively avoid them, but I am into motorcycles and this is almost that. So come along while we try to bring this machine ...
COPY my crossmember for your S10 V8 SWAP
Переглядів 1,2 тис.5 місяців тому
In a previous video, I showed building a crossmember for my LS swapped S10. I have received multiple comments on how people love the design and how I should produce it. Since people seem to like it, I have made this video detailing all of the measurements and material used, so now anyone is able to copy my design for use on their own swap. Enjoy!
ROD KNOCKED S10 BUDGET LS SWAP. FIRST START!
Переглядів 2,7 тис.6 місяців тому
This video finishes up the budget LS swap saga. It is very information heavy, there is a lot of talking, you have been warned. We go from basically an engine and transmission sitting in the chassis to a fully functioning truck. I hope to show in this video that, you dont need a lot of money to have fun with cars.
BUDGET LS S10 - DIY Exhaust Manifolds & Transmission Crossmember
Переглядів 3,7 тис.Рік тому
The budget LS S10 continues... This time I show how I make a custom transmission crossmember, and a home built set of exhaust manifolds. I like trying to learn new skills and techniques, I figured this was a good opportunity. There is probabaly a thousand ways, someone could tackle this, this is the way I did. I finish up by piecing together the last bits of the fuel system. I hope you enjoy th...
ROD KNOCKED S10 gets new LIFE from an LS swap. Part 1
Переглядів 10 тис.Рік тому
I bought a cheap S10 with a rod knocked 2.2L. In this video I walk through the plan, and show the steps I'm taking to put together a budget LS swap. This truck would have most likely ended up scrap, so we're going to give it a new life. The plan is to do it on a reasonably cheap budget. I will use whatever I have kicking around in my stash, but will spend when necessary or if it makes the truck...
THE TURBO S10 EXPERIMENT - STOCK COMPUTER
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
In this video I take you on a tour of how I turbocharged my buddies 2.2L S10 using the factory computer. The information given is for entertainment purposes, viewers assume all risk if they choose to try this.
I dig the "active fuel management system", very cleaver. Thanks for sharing.
👍
well done young man , I can tell its not your first rodeo, I really enjoyed the old school top end work that you did with out the music or blabbering ,you just did the work ,and your a good son ,so I had to sub .
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm editing the second part of repairing his truck now, so stay tuned. Thanks again for watching and subscribing.
I am still driving my 91 GMC 1500 2x4 automatic its got 240k ,instead of buying a new crap truck I restored the old girl during the scamdemic lock downs , this is what it looks like now ua-cam.com/video/-BDUuHcDqW4/v-deo.html
Very nice, super clean. I agree, the newer ones don't do it for me either. I like some electronics, but now there is so much involved in every function of the vehicle. I feel that in years to come so many of these new vehicles will be left to die because the cost to repair will be too high, meanwhile these will continue to live on.
Hey I followed my 1993 c1500 has 388k miles in it and still runs great I drive it everyday these were the best trucks Gm make in my opinion at least as long as it gets a transmission rebuild or two they can last a long time I’m hoping to get a 1/2 million out of mine it’s rust free so an engine rebuild my happen by then.
That's awesome. The 99-07 is my personal favorite. But there is no argument that these were great trucks. This one is on its second transmission. Thanks for watching the video.
Support ist kein Mord. Grüße aus dem Saarland.
Thanks for watching the video.
I’ve done dozens of these old GMT400 trucks over the last 25 years. Amazing how many people still drive them every day.
They are still everywhere. This is my dads truck, and he really likes how simple and reliable it is. This one has something like 370000km on it. During my apprenticeship, these were the trucks everyone had, the 99-07 trucks were still new at that point. It's funny almost 20 years later and I'm still working on them. Thanks for watching the video.
love those trucks still driving my 91 GMC
FIRE!!! FIRE!!! Beavis impersonation.
Huh, huh, huh, huh. That kid is weird. Butt head impersonation.
😮wow you’re my hero
Awesome find. Glad you got it running. A few things. The raves when you get it fixed, they need to be set level with the black cap. On the 787 it's level to the cap. On the 951 it's all the way down. Please get the correct spring for the rear rave valve. If you do not plan on doing any ocean riding you can hard jet the waterbox. If you ride in the ocean salt deposits will form in the jet and it won't work and a chance or melting the exhaust hose will occur. Baker Performance in Ontario used to recommend that. As far as the 97 GSX goes. This year has an issue with a parasitic drain. I had 2 97 GSX in the past. Each one did the same thing. So always disconnect the battery after you put it up. That's what the dealer recommended! lol. If the LED screen is baked there's a repair procedure you can do for it to get it going again. I did it. You can purchase the screen film on ebay. My 97 GSXL shows 108 original hours!!! I barely ride it. Get rid of those grey lines like someone else suggested. Looks like you need a left sponson. Get some black GSXL sponsons. They have a bit more hook to it than the purple GSX sponsons. I do not suggest modifying the 787 since I did that years ago. More problems then it's worth! If you haven't joined Sea Doo 2 Stroke Owners Club on FB you should. A lot of cool people on there very helpful. Have fun with the ski next yr!!
Thank you for the tips. I do plan on replacing the rear water control valve, me putting that spring in there was just a temporary repair just to try the machine. I didn't want to sink money in a machine that doesn't work. I dont know if I'll do anymore seadoo videos. Boats and watercraft are not really my thing. But thank you for watching my video.
Your cylinders have been bored 0.5 mm over stock, i could see the markings on the pistons when you scoped the cylinders
I noticed that as well. Dont have too much history on the machine, so not sure when that was done.
I am doing a Ls3 swap in a 03'Crown Vic Police Interceptor. Not really any info out there. The only good thing is some of the swap parts are used in the Mustang. The rest I've had to figure out. Fun tho lol.
Right on. That's what it about, I enjoyed doing this swap. I like the challenge of solving each little problem you run into. Thanks for watching.
@TheBackyardTech Yes sir!!! I started making videos for my grandkids to follow me when they can't be wrenching with me. I know people don't like the Gen 4 because of the transmission control moduals and the Canbus. I watched Ugly Truck Experience and Jerry figured out how to make the a/c work through the ECU so it'll idle the engine up. And also cruise control. Cool, that is definitely useful. Now that I am getting older, I am going to have a/c. Lol. Cruise control I can live without, lol.
@@GrandPitoVic I completely understand. Seems like every vehicle I buy for a swap has no factory A/C, so I'm left suffering the heat in the summer. But I have another swap planned in the future, and that will absolutely have A/C. I've even had the idea of taking an A/C from another car and making kind of a stand alone system, making it's own box and tucking it behind the seat or in the back seat in a car. Still just an idea at this point though.
Love it I’m working on a budget build 97 Nissan hardbody turbo great info
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching.
You'll want to replace all that grey fuel line. They are notorious for internally melting into a green jelly that clogs everything.
Good to know, thank you. I'm not really up to speed in the marine world.
It isn't the lines that causes this is the brass fitting.
Bought 96 gsx in 2019 for $250 Rebuild starter and carbs new battery. Still running strong but i dont go fast on the old girl.
That's kind of the plan with this one, just get out and bomb around a bit. I have a hard time with the going slow part lol. Thanks for watching
I love it. I want to do the same to my handstand. This is the first video that I’m watching. I’m gonna look and see if you did any any other updates I absolutely love it. I want to swap my S-10, but I think that would be better for later down the line right now I still want to make poweron a budget great work thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
I'm a welder for a fab shop in Houston TX. We do repair work as well and things off of boats tend to be problematic. For a first time weld trying your hand at an old cast aluminum part off of a water craft is about as difficult as you can get lol. Cast is horrible stuff to weld. Very porous and usually contaminated and doesn't weld nice at all. Its will after you repeatedly weld and grind it a few times to build up decent material. You did fine though. Doesn't matter what it looks like. Only matters if it works!
Thank you I appreciate it. I wanted to learn to tig weld because when your building a car and need to modify a part it's pretty much an essential skill. But guess it was just kind of bad luck that I chose the worst scenario to be my first time lol. Thanks for watching, and again for the kind words.
Osdmarine is the go to for carb kits. And ship to canada.
Thanks for the info. If I ever need any in the future I'll keep that in mind.
4-Link the rearend and that will fix axel wrap
dude you're kinda a mad scientist holy.
Thanks, you're not the first to say it. lol
I don’t think the reared is gonna like living there for very long
That is a very real possibility. But in the case that is does give up, I have a ford 8.8 I can swap in. But I'm kind of using it as an experiment, just to see what it can handle and how long it will last.
Did you tie the aux cooler and the radiator cooler togather and then ran it to the trans
Yes I did. It goes through the rad first, then through the auxiliary cooler, then back to the transmission.
Thanks! Looks great! Eventually I will LS my 95 s10. I'll be sure to look up this video!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video man!
Your very welcome.
Good stuff! Thanks!!
Your welcome, thanks for watching!
I made a trans crossmember for the 5.3 swap in ny 94 s10. I used some 1/8 wall round tubing. Put it down low on the frame rail and ran the exhaust over it.
Ya man, whatever works for you and your needs. Thanks for watching
What lift /hoist is that?
It is a Danmar M6. It's made by the company that makes the Maxx jacks hoist. It's the step above the maxx jacks. It has automatic locks where the maxx jacks has locking pins.
@TheBackyardTech Thank you sir for replying it's amazing when someone like you puts your vision to work.
Thank you for the kind words, and for watching the video.
Hi im Diego from argentina i have a s10 2000 2.2 l4 engine and i want install a turbo in it ...the question Is...i must replace the pistons ir the original work well for turbo ???
Hello, I did not replace the pistons. I used the factory installed pistons.
gah dam that shih bussin
Thanks for watching!
I really liked this, until you got to the injectors, I may still attempt with a stock intake mani and injectors
It worked great with the stock manifold and injectors, until it didn't. In hindsight, my recommendation would be to run 5 or 6 psi of boost rather than the 10 or 11 we were pushing. I think the factory injectors would have an easier time keeping up to that.
What did you do about the transmission dipstick tube? I am trying to get rid of this flexible firewall mounted one on my truck.
It's the stock dipstick and tube. I did have to manipulate it slightly. I also cut away a small ridge on the heater box just to keep it from rubbing.
ok thanks for the information. Truck looks good.
No worries. Thank you. Thanks for watching the video.
Quality content brother. Subscribed. Always interesting to see how others have solved problems on their swap. Feel free to check mine out
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed. I will. Thanks for watching.
That basically hown8 built the exhaust for my 5.3 swap in my s10. Took a bunch of scraps and welded them together. I did my crossover under the bellhousing instead of behind the transmission.
Right on, it was pretty time consuming but, I'm very pleased with how the exhaust turned out. The video doesn't do justice on how good it sounds. Thanks for watching the video.
Awesome job! I have to save this video as I would like to do this swap in my 95 s10. Mine has the 2.2 and a 5speed. So I will need a rear axle as well as the transmission( I would like to keep the manual) Very methodical and informative video!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for giving it a watch.
@@TheBackyardTech You had a whole vehicle to remove the engine, Transmission, ECU, and Harness right?
Correct. I used a complete 2001 Silverado to utilize all of its parts.
Do you happen to have the measurements for the cross member you made. I really like that version. I know I could mock one up but yours is damn near perfect.
I can take some measures from my template that I saved. You may have to fiddle with it to make it fit up, because I did deviate slightly when I made the real thing. But it's late right now, So I'll do it another time. To be fair, you're not the only one that likes it. I even had a guy tell me to start producing them. Maybe I'll make a short video devoted to the crossmember measurements so people can copy it.
Just a heads up, I made a video with all the crossmember measurements, materials used and how I built it. Hope this helps you make a copy for yourself.
@@TheBackyardTechthat's rad! I will check that out ASAP! Cheers
They are cast steel not cast iron the reason they weld good
People keep saying that. A guy on an ls forum sent one away and had it tested. Came back as cast iron, even showed the test sheet. But regardless of what they are made of people weld them all the time, I just did everything in my power to come out the other side with a good result.
Stupid question time could you bolt a ls to the stock s10 transmission?
Not stupid at all. Yes you can, as long as the s10 came with the 4.3 engine. The 4.3 is the same pattern as a small block chevy, which is the same as the LS. The 4 cylinders have the same pattern as the the 60 degree V6, like the 2.8 liter, so they will not fit. Possibly some company out there makes an adapter to bolt up the smaller pattern, but from the factory just the 4.3 stuff is the same.
so dose the 2.2 deserve the amount of hate it gets ? should i avoid buying one ?
My honest opinion, is it's a ok engine in its stock form. If you are just gonna drive it, it's fairly reliable. They do have there known issues, like head gaskets and timing chain/tensioner failure, but both are quite easy to repair. For modifications there are much better options. Plus there is pretty much no aftermarket support for this engine.
Awesome swap, I have a 02 S10 I thought about doing that to, I have a 383 SBC with a turbo 350, they make the oil pans that will fit, but the worry is the headers and the room for the rear distributor!! Hey if push comes to shove I have a source for a Buick 350, the ditributor sets up front!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks, that's cool man. I will be doing a SBC swap on my buddies s10 so I'm sure I will run into those issues as well.
You guys did a great job.
Thank you, and thanks for watching.
where in Canada are you? I am from manitoba and just picked up 2 4 cylinder mid 90s s10s will be engine swaping them
I'm in British Columbia. Cool, I'm a big fan of the S/T truck platform. I'm going to helping friends with there s10 v8 swaps as well.
Hey what brand/ model is the potentiometer
I'm not actually sure. My buddy bought it, I installed it. And it was like 2 years ago. He did some research and bought it from some website for audio equipment I believe. And I think he paid $65ish Canadian dollars for it. We tried the $20 Amazon ones and they were junk. That's about as much information I have about it.
@@TheBackyardTech well thanks 😊
Does this work for better gas mileage. I know when a map kinda goes out it could take fuel or add
This will absolutely not help with fuel mileage. Its makes it substantially worse, and you have to run high octane fuel with the turbo. By adding more air with a turbo you have to add more fuel, essentially its acting as a larger engine. I guess in theory you could put the potentiometer in on a stock truck to try to lean out the mixture to save fuel, but I dont think it's worth the risk of cooking the engine.
If you install a 5.3 on a s10 the transmission stays at original place or you have to move the transmission backwards a little bit or not i want to 5.3 swap on my 98 s10??????
Before I removed the original engine and transmission, I put a mark on the bottom of the cab. That mark, marks the end of the transmission. I put the Silverado transmission at that exact spot. Stock driveshaft fits.
Hey i know its a long shot but could you ell me how to wire ip the potentiometer and stuff like that and even make a sorta parts list im getting a 95 and wanna do this to it seems cools. The s10 im looking at has a rebuilt engine woth about 15k miles on it
The wiring diagram for the potentiometer is in the video. But the idea is that you put it in the place of the engine coolant sensor. As for a parts list, I put this truck together like 3 years ago, so I dont remember everything little thing. If you go back through the video I mention most of what I used.
Great work! Do you know if the driveshaft from a 2.2 5 speed will work with the 4l60e? Thanks in advance.
Thank you. The size and spline of the slip yolk is the same from the 4L60E to the Borg Warner T5. Cant say 100% on the length. I would imagine they would be the same or very close. But in theory as long as you could get the 4L60E tail shaft to sit in the same spot as where the T5 was, should work just fine.
@@TheBackyardTech thanks for the reply. Trying to get my parts list put together. The less stuff I have to buy the less shit my wife will give me.
Glad I could be of assistance. I'm finishing up the truck and the filming for part 3. So keep you eyes open for how it wraps up.
99 to 2002 camero cut the flang off and turn it and reweld it
If that's something I could have found for reasonable money or had laying around, absolutely. But I'm just working with what I got.
And a cost break down on it to please sir would b cool to ive know a guy that got a B2200 MAZDA TRUCK WITH A 4 CYC BUT IT CARB
This was a few years back so I'm not 100% on it. I can give you a general idea. 200 turbo, 200 intercooler, 500 afr guage, 100 fuel pressure regulator, 150 fuel pump, 60 potentiometer. 250 universal piping kit, 400 exhaust and mufflers, 100 in guages. 60 blow off valve. A few head gasket kits, head bolts and oil, filters and coolant. And bunch of stuff I had laying around, and I'm sure there is a bit I'm not thinking of. Keep in mind this is Canadian money, so our prices are usually higher than US prices. Hope this helps.
How much did this cosf total
I'm not 100% on the cost exactly. My buddies truck so he paid for it. Its probably in the 1500 range, but we also had some bad luck with engines, so we had to buy a few head gasket kits and do a bunch of changes along the way. I think I remember him saying that all said and done it was under 3 grand. But if you built it the way it finished I would say 1500.
How many more payments on your tattoo? 😂 jk …... Great video.
Just a few lol. Thanks for watching.
