Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi outlines the various categories and types of Muslims as described by Allah in The Noble Qur'an Chapter 35 [Fatir] Verses 29 - 34, specifically elucidated in Verse 32 as 1st Dhalimun li-Nafsihi, 2nd Muqtasid and 3rd Sabiqun bil-Khayrat leading to several sub-categories, namely Kufr, Shirk, Nifaq, Fisq and Dhulm which are states applicable to both Muslims and non-Muslims.
فَمِنْهُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِ وَمِنْهُم مُّقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْهُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ
