Mental Health in Footy | Tom Jonas
Countless young Aussies grow up playing sport, dreaming of life as a professional athlete.
Making a career out of playing the game you love sounds perfect; but as Tom Jonas will tell you, there’s more to it than meets the eye.
The former Port Adelaide captain's 13 season AFL career came to an end in 2023 after a rollercoaster year of inner turmoil. Tom's had to come to terms with hanging up the boots, and figure out how to evolve after footy.
We chat about the AFL's ongoing shift in mental health culture and the broader impact of players showing vulnerability. Plus, Tom gives his insight on managing the mental and emotional side of professional sport.

Everything was ticking along nicely for Kish, enjoying a ...

Really looking forward to this one, Tom seems very genuine and honest. Great stuff
He absolutely is. Thanks for tuning in!
The guy saying pretty unlikely multiple times is so frustrating. It's not that unlikely what's unlikely is doctors testing for it and landlords and apartments admitting that there is black mold in the first place!
Thank you for this video! I had to stop my hiking, working out that I have done for decades. Started exercising again after 13 years with TRX & Yoga but had to stop all forms of exercising because I then was diagnosed with Acute Heart Failure. Now that I'm doing a little better I've been struggling to find other forms of exercise that I am allowed to do. I'm still not able to hike like I did before, hurts my head and makes my heart too too fast! My injury yoga instructor (also my PT for my other injuries) hasn't been able to find a place to hold classes, etc. and because of my injuries I can't just go to anyone, difficult between heart & brain pain too. I will look into other anaerobics (which was never told about). Wondering what other rehab he has had! I was treated as if a hypochondriac and sent on my way. Working full time, raising a very active son, was a Cub Scout & pack leader, on many not for profit committee boards, etc. They only told me to sleep, which I couldn't with the spinning vertigo and 24'hr migraines, post concussion syndrome for over 3 1/2 years, exhausted and barely functioning pushing myself to the limits because they told me I had too! Continually getting worse and worse. I still have many of the symptoms like he said with words like he said tweezers. My sentence and words get jumbled. Then a few days later I'm fine for part of a day and then back. I still have LT & ST memory problems, still can't sleep, had study and no apnea but no answers again! Seems the USA needs to get their crap together with TBI in fully functioning TBI people that pass their inadequate TBI testing! 😡 they are many of us in limbo that didn't get what we needed and being told it's too late!
@@michelesoto5919 hi Michele so sorry to hear about the injustice and everything you’re going through. I hope you’re able to find a professional who can actually help. Don’t give up.

Didn't have the external injuries but you have explain my life for 15 1/2 years, no therapy or tx, 3 1/2 years of dr's and finally diagnosed and told it was too late. Where's the rest of your story....? I'm still looking for help!

I am so proud of you telling your story. Its very courageous. I was sexualy abose from 3 years old until i was 14. The sad thing that hurt was my whole family knew and they didnt do nothing about it.
Disagree you only show the soft side and your unokay with trusted people. Everyone does not need to know your not okay.
did he have hair loss
Thank you
I think people whove had both good loving and supportive parents in there lives are just lucky
My daughter has been watching my struggles with BP2 that have gotten so much worse in the last decade for a number of compounding reasons. I’ve been on suicide watch in hospital three times and I know the thought of me self harming terrifies her and just thinking about this is ripping me up inside. I don’t know how to protect her from my mental health struggles - I wish she had a normal dad… but the depths of depressive spells and knowing they won’t stop coming is unsolvable.
Absolutely
I sweat excessively for no reason.I feel tired all the time. Unmotivated. Haaaah...... We got such tough lives to live. Never loose hope
I developed OCD, Generilised Anxiety Disorder,Tremors, Depression and Trauma.Taking medicines makes you lethargic like a corpses So I started tapering the doses after taking them for 13 years(I have successfully tapered half the doses. It was a-hell-in-my-chest-expexperince). I dont know how some boys arnt affected at all by child sex abuse.I..... I mean.... It defined me.Something that happened 25 years ago can make my days unlivable(I lost large part of my eye sight) . Anyone who reads this..... Dont give up.Just live. You have survived so far

Fuck. That. Shit. Cheating happens because your a disloyal back stabbing piece of shit, now that might be the reason you end a relationship and go with someone else, but cheating is unacceptable.
Rip brother
YES!!
No. This does not justify being a lousy human being. Just because someone on the internet or even in person says some scientific psychological excuse doesnt justify or mean cheaters are off the hook
Great to see something for the men👍
Far out, this is an amazing, powerful episode.
I had no idea it’s so socially acceptable in Australia. It is not a ok drug. I used just like this gentleman I can relate to him so much. I was a weekend warrior holding 2 jobs and no one knows. The drug reined my life socially financially and physically!!! It is not a joke even weekend use is very bad do to the decision making it makes you do. It completely makes you decision making go down the gutter
Agreed. It might seem ok when you start, but for some it leads to giving up everything else in your life.
So proud of you Luke
So good
Thanks for watching 👊
There should be rules, and strippers should not be abused or assaulted.
What an amazing young woman. So sorry for your loss. I can definitely relate to her feelings after losing my son to suicide coming up 2 years ago.
@@merieflavel7497 sorry for your loss too ❤️

Your channel has great quality contents but still it is not delivering its right audiences due to SEO problems. You should focus on your SEO so that You can get a big fanbase. Thanks.
The background music/beat is very annoying and distracting

We don't need the SIDE ANGLE camera views. Thanks
sexual abuse between children and their parents destroys the very core of the child. The inate shame and disgust , the powerlessnsess and betrayal is beyond the pale.
The brain is in highest survival mode something not right about environment or the people in your life. Some women become like this during pms the brain is sensing a threat/disturbance to the body maybe
If youre watching this and you are a closeted gay man, please, WORK ON YOURSELF, do NOT marry a woman to hide your identity. It is devastating, it it is beyond selfish and wrong. If youre more worried about hiding your true self and using someone to help in this operation than you are about the moral shortcomings about trapping a woman who loves you based on a lie, you REALLY need to work through your issues. PLEASE.
I was sexually assaulted when I was young, once with a babysitter and then by an older man down the street from where I use to live as an adolescent that went on for years, now I live with another guy who was abused sexually as well, no close friends or family close by.
I agree , after watching i feel admiration for Edan too. What a courageous young man, with strength like steel and such a gentle soul too. Thank you for telling your story Edan. Could see it was difficult at times but you still told it. All the best mate.
Nice words Andrew. Glad Edan’s story made you feel that way. Cheers
A lot of love you for you bro I hope one day I can forgive my parents 🤞🏽
when a boy has to raise his self the way a father should have
Its called life and not being a puzzy. Your parents have to work to keep a roof ober your head and food on the table. If you have to make chips with cheese because they are at work, it is ok. Unless you want a liberal when they get older.
Even worse with active neglect Like a kid not wanting to move so instead of convincing them or picking them up their parents say "ill just leave you here then" n start walking away Well done, great fckn parenting Give them abandonment issues before they can process it properly and make them resent you Good one
🎉🎉🎉
Jesus heals trauma, I’m telling you. He’s the higher power
Sam I just want to say. I just seen you on to, your doing absolutely fine. Good luck with your research. Anastasia💗🌻🙏👨🏽🦽
