Lagavulin 11 Offerman Edition Rum Cask Finish Review
Today I review the newest release of Lagavulin 11 Offerman Edition finished 8 months in rum casks from Jamaica. I usually like peat and rum together so let's see how this one fares.
The previous editions of Offermans were all good so I'm curious to see how this stacks up against it's predecessors. Hope you enjoy, cheers!

I've been challenged! - One Whisky Per Region Challenge
Переглядів 781День тому
Geoff @Gwhisky challenged me to pick one whisky from each region. My friend Geoff has a fantastic knack of challenging me in the most inopportune moments possible and he caught me, yet again, when I'm on holiday with my family. Fine I'll leave them for some day drinking if I must! Regions are all a bit blurred these days and Islands are not officially a region but this won't stop us from giving...

A delicious Whisky - Benriach 21 Review

Today I review the Benriach 21 on the 21st day of the month, well timed wouldn't you say :) Benriach 21 is matured in 4 different casks, bourbon, sherry, virgin oak and Bordeaux red wine casks. It's also made with peated and unpeated spirit. This is by no means a peated whisky but the peat is acting like a nice little spice over the delicious whisky. I have not had this one yet, but I’m starting to lose faith in the limited edition Lagavulin products. Just had the 2023 special release tequila finish and was not impressed. It’s just so simple for the price. I think Talisker 10 is a better pour for half the money. With the amount of special releases they do, it’s starting to look like a cash grab

    Haven't tried any of those editions, first off for some availability reasons here unfortunately, then I'd guess price wise....I said somewhere in a chat I did doubt it could be a Captain Morgan's casks finish (as it is spiced rum, not "regular" rum which would comply to SWA rules), but you'll never know as Diageo continues to break their own past rules, who knows ? I love the packaging, not all the notes I hear but you seem to like it. I currently hesitating about a French storepick exclusive peated & rum cask Lindores Abbey distillery limited release, as there is alas no way to try it before I buy... Cheers !

    • @christinecamley
      @christinecamley 4 дні тому

      This is definitely not a Vaptain Morgan’s run finish. I can’t drink Captain Morgan’s rum. For me it’s garbage. I am not a huge fan of rum or rum casting but this expression is delicious!

      @@christinecamley Thanks Christine, also it seems that C.Morgan seems to have a high sugar rate in it (I see they pretend not, weird) so if it is "legal" rum, it is very unlikely they used it for that, also people forget sometimes that we're (with Lagavulin) into Scotch whisky trade territory, not Japanese, for instance (& even there it starts to change), i mean there are exchanges between Lagavulin's owner Diageo & other big companies owning also rum distilleries, so we have no evidence that for this whisky Diageo didn't pick casks from "outsider" distilleries than in its portfolio...Thanks for your feedback about it, but it is hard to find in EU else than on line (so with extra shipping fees).

    • @thewhiskyenthusiast

      @thewhiskyenthusiast 4 дні тому

      Haha yeah Diageo would be quite OK to break some rules but like you said the casks don't need to be theirs. The only time I didn't enjoy rum and peat was the Ardnamurchan Rum Cask. @@thewhiskyenthusiast Noted as I hadn't had the chance to try this AD...(a bit bored with that hype also, I prefer "tamed" Ardnamurchan so far = small batch of casks, instead of official single-casks & small batch CS I tried, for now at least...One exception, though the indie bottling I awarded in 2023 but didn't bought...and now prices here are jumping for OB/SC/CS too (150 to over 300 €), so its a no for me...On a more positive side, a tip, if you like rum finished whiskies, indie Bushmills are often aces ! Anlatımınız için teşekkürler. Son zamlardan sonra fiyatı oransal olarak en fazla artan viskilerden biri oldu maalesef (5 Temmuz 2024 itibariyle 2150 liradan 2850 oldu). Which would be my regional picks... Hands down my favorite whiskies are from the islands (not necessarily from, but definitely including Islay). Tobermory is a really good one IMO, of course Lagavulin and Ardbeg are quite nice. My second favorite region would probably be Speyside (with Speyside being pretty much the VAG of the whisky world, they've just got a lot of variety, and a bunch of world famous brands come from there).

    Im so happy that this inaugural release was a sizeable one. This whisky hasnt landed in Canada yet but once it does it is a must buy for me. The distillery was a magical place to visit and i cant wait to actually try the whisky. Awesome video buddy, cheers eh! 🥃

    Great rundown of the distillery and what they are all about. Sally came up clutch as driver to and from. Kyla did the same for me on Islay. We're both lucky to have women like them in our lives buddy 😊 Great video Sertug. Cheers buddy 🥃

    Was able to get full bottles of the Original and the Smokey last year on sale for a very low price. They were just ok for me. For how long ago it started it seems they should have age statements on the core range bottles. Enjoyed the much younger Cotswolds distillery core range release. Cheers

      @thewhiskyenthusiast 17 днів тому

      Yeah I understand what you're saying, I thing the Cotswolds NAS ones are better as well. These guys do have age statements/vintages in their single cask releases or limited editions. For example you can get a single cask cask strength English whisky for the same price as Cotswolds' sherry/bourbon/peated casks. Give them a try if you can find. Thanks for watching, cheers

    Interesting series, Sertug, nice mix of editing & tasting...I did taste only one or two expressions from this distillery so far, but it was too early in their journey & maybe in mine too, they were pleasant, but for some reason I didn't get me any & the availability of their whiskies here decreased at a time, in favor or more recent players like Cotswolds...I still would like to have one from the core range some day as they are the pioneers of English single malt, but we'll see....I love a lot the yellow packaging of the 11 yo but several tasters notes did discourage me to get it, and its price too....Looking forward to see your next episod in this cool series ! 👍

      Thanks Greg glad you liked it. Yes their core range is nothing to shout about but I do enjoy their age statements and single cask releases and they're good value as well compared to the competition. Cheers

    How do u know its legit and not filled with 18yr or something similar ?

    • @thewhiskyenthusiast
      @thewhiskyenthusiast 17 днів тому

      Because I trust Mark and his expertise. He's a very reputable whisky dealer and he does his due diligence to the T. Also because this tastes nothing like an 18 year old whisky that I know of or can identify.

    Very cool to be able to sample something distilled so long ago. Before this what is the "oldest", in terms of its distillation date, that you think you have tried? Cheers!

      Thank you yeah an absolute delight and an incredible experience. I have a bottle of Ballantine's 17 from the 1960s so depending on which end of the decade it might've been distilled between 1943 and 1952. How about you?

    Great opportunity for you to try a Pre-World War II whisky...!!! (ahem, 22 yo, not 100 yo obviously...). Angels did do you a favor this time (what a story !)...In my experience, those very old school ones are very fragile & delicate to apprehend (first off I would have suggested to let it breathe half an hour before nosing, if not more, then very slowly nosing it, tasting it, etc...but it's too late, just saying..). I'm not surprised by its herbal side, lots of Speysiders & Highlanders even distilled before i was born were challenging, unusual, not always pleasant & not belonging to nowadays standards, let alone what we know of The Macallan style (...). I hope you'll have other occasions to try very old whiskies (I mean distilled quite back in time, but also maybe some of those Gordon & MacPhail 70 to 81 yo like some youtubers had the opportunity to try & review on video..). Anyway, well done, Sertug, on the tasting notes, btw ! 👏🥃

      Greg thank you and ahem yes of course 22 but I couldn't resist the marketing aspect, mea culpa 😅 Thanks for the suggestion and yes I did think to let it breathe but I thought the bottle itself breathed in transit and also when Mark was bottling them. I did leave the remainder to try as the day went but not much has changed to be honest. You're right on the fragile side but good knowledge on the herbal issue thank you. I once came across a cocktail book for NYC bars written in the 1930s and it mentions 'the malt whisky Scots of Highlands drink are nothing like the smooth and tasty whiskies (he means the blends) we have in USA. They're bitter, harsh and very unpleasant' Shows you a little glimpse into the past and also how things have changed. Thanks for your input Greg, always appreciate it
