Why Most Screenwriters Never Finish Their First Draft
Some time ago, McQ posted this about Screenwriting on his Instagram account: "Where you start, doesn't matter so much. Just keep moving that cursor to the right". Simple, but quite effective.
Any faction in Warhammer 40k. It is what makes it unique. Everyone is evil. but you can cheer on the evil that resonates with you. Change is heresy.
Captain America is also a classic example.
I had forgotten about this thread. Twitter is so dead that I have to go to UA-cam to remember the good stuff lol
😅 It's great, right?! I screenshotted this thread 5 years ago and shared it on my personal Facebook page. I got a Memory prompt about it in October. And then noticed that Christopher McQuarrie's Twitter account is gone as well. Happy to do my part in keeping the good stuff alive 😉
Thanks for reading the original EC comics.
They're the best! ❤️ And I couldn't believe how big this book was when I ordered it. Thanks for watching 🙌
Man this is exactly what I've been thinking for my own career. I'm just finishing up my first script but boy do I have plenty more just waiting for me to get started. I realized that it's so unlikely that any studio would ever even read my script let alone buy it and make it. I've had the idea that micro budget filmmaking is most likely my way to go to get started. I have other story ideas that can work perfectly for a micro budget. So now instead of looking for way to get executives to read my script, I'm now looking for ppl in the micro budget scene that I can probably easily get in touch with and they WILL read my script if they're interested. Micro budget is the way to go folks. But yeah I guess we can also keep playing the lottery at the same time. I mean ya never know right?
Love it! This is a solid mindset. I would also add that you can connect with producers and decision-makers and see if they have ideas that they would love to develop - and then offer your services. If they want to see a sample of your writing, you can send it on. And now they are reading your script 😉 But going with micro budget is an awesome approach. Team with a local director and some actors and produce a scene or a sample as well. Mainly just get out there and enjoy the process of making it. This is the most authentic way to make connections and you'll learn a ton along the way.
Without coin, connections, crews, clout, computer code, control, corporate communities, and opulent opportunities... *you ain't sheet.* End of story; no exceptions. 💪😎✌️ Deal with that reality or else go drink a nice tall, frothy chalice of copium.
Here's an aesthetic suggestion.. Change your shirt... Its more awkward than your body language and background
😅
Most people aren't skilled enough to write something good.
And a lot of those people become the decision-makers. So go show your creative skills to them and help them tell their story…
Can't, son. 💪😎✌️ Without coin, connections, crews, clout, computer code, control, corporate communities, and opulent opportunities, an individual (or small group) has NO chance. It's absolutely, unequivocally impossible without those eight things. No exceptions. Anyone who states things differently is either lying or they've already BEEN lucky enough to get inside and be forever wealthy and popular.
@@Novastar.SaberCombat Ever rule has an exception, BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and CLERKS were produced and became big hits. It is extremely rare, but it can happen.
Thanks for this video 👌
Hope it helps! ⭐️
I don't see how any of this is practical. If you want to be a professional writer find someone who needs a writer, show them your screenplays portfolio, then help THEM write THEIR movies/shows. Then go from there. Work with those low level filmmakers and actors. Work with people who are on your level. Hollywood wants you to do the job.
That's McQuarrie's point though... Check out his 8th and 14th Tweet.
@writing-chops I did but honestly him repeating the "it's a lottery" analogy just blurs the point that can otherwise be explained better. Edit: No offense😂 look at me, a nobody, trying to sound like I can do something better than the BAFTA and Academy Award winning guy who gave us masterpieces like Usual Suspects and the original X-Men that I genuinely use as models for my own scripts lol. Thanks OP for sharing the vid
Never ever ever ever go to film school. Get a job that will pay you everyday. Do this in your spare time or you will starve.
Another reason to get a job is that it gives you unique life experiences that can be translated into your writing projects.
This is ignorant advice. It totally depends on your situation. For me, I went to a shitty film school (though at a good university) through which I got my first gig (on America’s Most Wanted). I learned how to write screenplays (poorly, 😉), and made my first films. Three years later I was working at Paramount. For me, at the time, film school was THE ONLY way I could get any experience and without that experience I wouldn’t have gotten into Paramount. Was it as easy as it sounds? Of course not. It was (almost) impossibly hard. I got lucky, but as they say, “luck favors the prepared” and I was prepared just enough for someone to take a chance on me. That wouldn’t have happened without film school.
Wrong. I went to film school and it was through film school that I made the connections and got the opportunity to get into the film industry. You get what you put in. Just because film school doesn’t work for some people doesn’t mean it won’t work for others. The opposite is true also, just because some people didn’t need film school to be successful in film, doesn’t mean you will be successful without film school.
Thanks for reading these tweets
😅 McQuarrie actually deleted his Twitter account. So these Tweets are gonners! 😳 The only reason I had these was because I screenshotted them 5 years ago... Hope you dig the advice.
100% regret
Regret not seeing this advice sooner...? 😏
1st One here!
What a load of regurgitated BS.

Let’s all be heroes and Make America - you know - tomorrow!
You killed it!!👌
Thank you very much! Thrilled to hear you enjoyed it. If there's any other topics you'd like us to cover, let us know...
Great work! Thank you for doing this run through, which turned out to be quite interesting. I am breaking down a number of movies using multiple story structures at the moment, then I stumbled on you. And I found more. I think, there is one more you might want to consider. It is Daniel Calvisi's Story Maps.
Thank you so much. Great shoutout with Story Maps. I'll check it out and see if we can make a Chop dedicated to it. Best of luck with your project!
Great advice!
Thank you so much! We aim to publish these each Monday 🙌
are these primarily for science fiction or fantasy?
Thanks for watching. These principals can be applied to any genre. The structures described come from stories of all shapes, sizes, genres and years. From Aristotle to Aaron Sorkin ;-)
Great creative discussion! Some excellent ideas there. In my opinion, the ideal type of character to be abducted by aliens would be someone who has taken part in abducting others. For example, someone who's job it is to kidnap people from foreign lands in order to put them into slavery. The character could learn the error of his ways through his personal experience of being abducted, creating a meaningful character ark. Having the story set a couple of centuries ago would also be a unique angle for an alien film.
Thank you so much for watching. Great idea. I also like the idea of an alien abduction in the past. One of the ways into this specific story was to find a unique character to be deal with this specific crisis. We see lots of modern versions. But something set in the distant past would also be very fertile ground to tell an Alien Abduction story!
@@writing-chops Thanks. One problem I see with a film like that is the expense. Not only would the film need to include expensive special effects for the alien ship, planet, aliens etc, but by making it a period piece it would require the landscape, costume, architecture, transportation etc to be dated, adding even more to the budget.
don't even mention kishotenketsu… disappointed
There's always room for a part 2 😉 Thanks for watching.
Structuring is not fun for me. I create structure as a write. Writing is how your create structure. Be a pantzer writer is fun and creative, strufcturing is boring and predictable.
Do you have an idea of the ending before you start writing? Or is that something you figure out in your journey as well?
First.
Not sure Dean Koontz created these ideas...but sure.
It's not really about creating ideas. It's more about recommendations and best practices for structuring stories, based on his own experience.
1st
I did the snowflake method and didnt know i was doing it because i never heard of the theory until i watched this video. 😂
Great stuff! I've actually used this method recently. It's a really fun way to build a story!
Don't you find all these pretty the same ?
There's commonalities, for sure. But that's also the point... And you don't have to follow these beats, but you should understand them.
@@writing-chops thats what Im trying to do)))) maybe would be great to create different videos for each of them but cover more deep with examples) if it make sence of course)))
That's excellent! Love the imagery too. The willy wonka cracked me up.
Thanks! Delighted you enjoyed it. I'm sure an Oompa-Loompa is kicking it in the back somewhere 😉
Did I manitfest this I just told an Ai about a Political body swap play
That's hilarious. I think we aughta chalk this up to what scholars would call a 'coinkydink' 😅 I hope you enjoy our take 🙌
All opinions are biased otherwise they would not be opinions.
"Unbiased opinion" is definitely probably an oxymoron
"Hyper bowl?!" As in "Super Bowl?" Or "Toilet Bowl?" Sorry, my friend, but when you mispronounced "the most important literary device...," you lost all credibility. If you had truly mastered the terms that you presume to teach, instead of merely cribbing from the work of others, you would know the correct pronunciation. And don't bother deflecting with a glib response. Instead, be man enough to admit that you're wrong and apologize. That's the intellectually honest thing to do.
This criticism sounds deliberately and quite extravagantly exaggerated... What a minute! 🤔 I see what you are doing! 💡 Well played user-wh4lx9by20 👏
@@writing-chops -I mocked your errant pronunciation. (Fact, not exaggeration) -I quoted your own words regarding "the most important literary device...." (Fact, not exaggeration) -I opined that making such a glaring mistake undermines your credibility as a competent teacher. (Fact, not exaggeration) -I mentioned that you’re cribbing the work of others. Unless you wish to claim that you created the 40 terms you shared, a claim that would actually be extravagantly exaggerated, you did indeed appropriate the work of others…WITHOUT, I might add, taking the effort to research the correct pronunciation, which is just lazy. (Fact, not exaggeration) (FYI: All you had to do, by the way, is Google the word “hyperbole,” and the definition appears along with an option to hear the word spoken aloud. In addition, there’s a button that reads: “Learn to pronounce.” That link allows you to slow down the audio for remedial instruction. Easy-peasy.) -Finally, I predicted that you would respond with a glib remark rather than do the intellectually honest thing: admit that you're wrong and apologize. (Fact, not exaggeration) How did I know you would deflect? Hint: Ponder the words “intellectually honest.” We all make mistakes. But not all of us are secure enough to own up to our mistakes. All you had to write was this: “You’re right. I stand corrected. Promise to do better. Thanks for watching.”
It's very funny, having mispronunciation in a video about literacy.
Isn't it ironic? Don't you think? A little too ironic And yeah, I really do think 😜
Slow down… it was hard to keep up. The slides are a wonderful idea, but even they flew off the screen too fast.
Tollme about character building
Sure thing. We will have something specific to character development quite soon. But in the meantime, this clip might help: ua-cam.com/video/ZfFxlBG69Kg/v-deo.htmlsi=QXzEegNs635TskdW
Excellent!
Why, thank you very much! 🙌
I can never control my characters which is more of a problem for me.
Sometimes we give our characters too many motivations. Too many wants and needs. If you can boil their desire down to one actionable objective, then this could help frame them in each scene (and then build from there!). Hope that helps!
@@writing-chops Makes sense. Thank you.
Characters taking on a life of their own is a very good indicator. I'd read about it happening, but what an amazing experience when it actually happened to me while I was writing recently, it was fantastic!
It's the best, right!? When you are genuinely surprised that the character didn't go the way you 'planned.' Great work!
@@writing-chops Yes! It’s a fantastic and unpredictable adventure you never want to end!
@@writing-chops Thanks!
Great advice!
Thank you! Thrilled that you enjoyed it 🤙
Brilliant, love it!
Thank you! 💛
This is a comprehensive and digestible description of story structure. Seldom have I seen so much in one video. It's everything you need to get to know that subject. Well done.
Thank you so much! Thrilled to hear that you enjoyed it. And yes, that was our mission: To create a clean, clear and simple guide to story structure. Both showing what they have in common, while also detailing the differences 🙌
Woo hoo!!
Groovy!
this was a super helpful video!
You're very welcome! Let us know if there are any other topics you'd like us to cover 🙌
Thanks, I will keep that in mind, though lately I have been racking my brain on story structure, hah@@writing-chops
The term' The exception proves the rule' actually means that the exception will test the rule to see if the rule holds true.
"There is an exception to every rule. This is a rule and there is no exception to this rule. Which proves that there is an exception to every rule." 😜
"The exception that proves the rule," is always a rare example that succeeds by contradicting said rule, which when otherwise disregarded seems destined for "certain" failure. It is definitely a paradox of its own.
I use the Hero's Journey, the time tested story structure. It has worked for me.
Fantastic! Tried, tested and weather-resistant! It's fun to subvert and experiment with all types of storytelling. But it is hard to fault the pure satisfaction that this model brings to a narrative. Thanks for watching.
starts 3:10
But what about the context❓ Don't do want the context❣️ 😅
Video begins at 3:30
Let's negotiate... How about 1:44❓ 'What all stories have in common' is a pretty sweet segment to kick off the 10, right? 😜
A lot of these feel like the same storyline described differently.
Yep. That's a central thrust through much of story structure guidance. The Writer's Journey is based on the Hero's Journey. The Story Circle is based on the Writer's Journey. And then there is certain beats that exist across most narrative frameworks. There are subtle differences. But the general principal is to understand the commonalities. From here, you can decide to adopt them, subvert them or ignore them.
@@writing-chops Very insightful, thanks!
Do you realize that these "rules" are literally based on films of the past? That's like an architect designing a building based on other buildings instead of creating his/her own design. This is why modern movies suck - the audience anticipates all of these events. You should never use Harmon's Story Structure.
😅 Well, the title of the Chop does imply that these were used in films of the past. And I don't believe we call them "rules" at any point. We even highlight that you don't necessarily have to obey them, but you should still have knowledge of them: "So even if you don’t want to embrace it, you damn sure better understand it." So let's say you have a story that doesn't have a conventional structure. A producer or a decision-maker may ask why you decided to leave out the inciting incident or why you skipped the first act. It would be considered best practice to have an answer for this. Hope that helps.
