Morton FELDMAN | Vertical Thoughts 4 (1963)
Feldman composed the Vertical Thoughts series in less than a year. Despite their different instrumentations the six works are musically very similar, in the same way visual artists create a number of works in a series that explore the same concept. As the title suggests, the musical material is mostly comprised of single tones and harmonies, or short groupings of them, the primary organizing feature being their vertical (mis)alignment-miniature musical structures scattered across an almost-static sonic field. The fourth in the series is the only piano solo, a concise distillation of Feldman’s signature compositional language, with its occasional, subtle expressions of personal grief and religiosity. Musicologist Benjamin Levy connects the Vertical Thoughts series to Feldman’s overt Judaism, as expressed through this personal style of abstraction, a sort of Talmudic musicality.

Ann SILSBEE | Bagatelle (1963)
Переглядів 833 роки тому
Silsbee composed the piano solo Bagatelle in Ithaca in 1963, two years after she graduated with her B.A. in Music from Radcliffe and several years before her graduate studies. In just over two pages of manuscript, she demonstrates a concise control of dissonant small-form modernism. Bartók’s influence is clearly felt-especially in the brief, lilting tune harmonized in minor sevenths halfway thr...

Henry COWELL | Fabric (1920)
Переглядів 2483 роки тому
While it uses no tone clusters or other unique early modern melodic/harmonic materials, compositional techniques for which Cowell is most well-known and oft-discussed (and rightly so!), "Fabric" (1920) is notable for its avant-garde approach to rhythm; the two page score presents otherwise conservative harmonic and melodic materials in three-part polyrhythmic polyphony. It is a brief, brooding ...
Frederic RZEWSKI | Dreadful memories (1978)
Переглядів 2253 роки тому
“Dreadful Memories” is one of Rzewski's shortest piano solos, and unlike many of his other works with optional cadenzas and lengthy guided improvisational sections, is fully composed with no indications or invitations for the performer to elaborate on the material themself. Written for Paul Jacobs, like Rzewski's other piano tetraptych from 1978, "Squares," the "North American Ballads" (1978-79...
George WALKER | Piano Sonata No. 5 (2003)
Переглядів 4543 роки тому
Walker’s Piano Sonata No. 5 was the last piano work he composed, and it is by far the briefest of his five sonatas in one taut five-minute movement (though by no means unsubstantial). Here he reduces the sonata-allegro convention of contrasting themes, motives, and developments to their most spartan. The declamatory exchanges and brooding expressive phrases are conveyed in a terse, modernist la...

thank you so much! i agree, there are some gems in the Poulenc solo repertoire that far outshine the handful of moderately decent pieces that inexplicably became popular for some reason.

Finally I hear someone who plays the beginning the way it is written, without swinging the rhythm!! Thank you! I think of it as an elegy-lullaby. It seems that people imitate the first performer Paul Jacobs. The original song isn’t sung in a swung way, so I don’t know why he does it. It takes away from the tenderness and heart wrenching nature of the original. Beautiful and clear playing. Thanks! I’m glad I didn’t listen to too many people playing this until after I learned it myself.

thank you, I appreciate that! I felt rather good about it while it was happening. I mean no personal offense to dislike what you've done with the Digital Performer realizing Scriabin and other works, but if I may say, much of that repertoire, Scriabin especially and Feldman to lesser degree perhaps, makes no sense to me to be rendered in any other way than an insightful, nuanced live performance. It is cool and elucidating for some of the other stuff, especially more complex repertoire that is extremely difficult to execute in perfect detail.

allarmunumralla's Messiaen is quite good. I find too many pianists play the bird songs with too many sentimental nuances. Allarmunumralla's renditions restore a certain purity to the texts. your interpretation of "La Chouette" is good, although I find this particular piece of the catalogue a bit too esoteric for me.
