2012 Suzuki Vstrom review, 75,000 miles
Where did u get that triangular silver bracket that hooks on blinkers forks and headlight?
Did you make the bash plate?
I just got 23 sv. It seems to be a great value with lots of fun.
Why does it slide on gravel? Due to suspension?
Cheers mate, I’ve just installed a new LED light bulb
Thanks for your help mate ! Super easy and helpful
Are you in napa?? I'm not too far away. Would love to check out the roads you are on in this video. VStrom is my next bike. 👍😁🏍
I basically ride up Dry Creek Road and down Oakville Grade. On to hwy 128 to Lake Berryessa and back on hwy 121 to Napa. Great motorcycle roads up here except on weekends when it gets a bit crowded with RVs during the summer months and traffic heading to Lake Berryessa
NIce vid. I often wonder why people bother with throttle locks when electronic cruise control is so much better and only requires a couple of hours to install. My Goldwing came with it and liked it so much that I put it on my 650 Burgman. And now the DL650 has it too. So nice to have. 👍
It's an inexpensive option for $12 that works just fine.
@@sdoo7441 They do not work just fine for me. At least not for more than a few seconds before you to adjust the throttle again. They are better than nothing I suppose but oh Lord I would hate to have to go back to a throttle lock now.
Often price is the determining factor. Electronic cruise controls are generally more expensive than a $12 throttle lock, which works fine. Yes it creeps after a couple of minutes, but I don't need the throttle lock for more than a minute
wat isthe purpose for the fork brace?
stablilizes the front end. Prevents the fork from flexing too much when pushed
@@sdoo7441 awesome thanks, ill look into that
Own Gen1 vstrom650 no bash plate or crash bars gone 2 up with wife around oz on outback tracks without any problems . I've heard all the BS you need this and that and the other, it's nonsense. It's one of the best bike on the market.
If you go offload, you need the baseplate and side guards. I've crashed enough offroad to prove they save the bike's body parts. I also have plentry of dents and damage on my bash plate from going over rocks and downed trees
Thank you Dude 👍
Super great video & helpful!! 😁
Glad you think so!
Are you filming this outside the loading bay of a warehouse?
LOL...Delivery truck
That was a beautiful ride and video. I just wonder where the heck everyone is on this video, it needs more hits so come on all!
Thanks for making this 👍
I can hear everything but your voice man
Nice thxs for sharing
The only issue with this approach is that it is prone to accidental fire. The fuse is protecting a circuit with 25 amps (so, it will blow out if there is over 25 amps going through it). Now, you install an extension of the cable and most likely the wire is not rated for 25 amps, hence if something is wrong, the wire will heat up and eventually catch fire. So, to play safe, if you want to do it this way, ensure that your are using wire rated, say, 30 amps at 12V.
I used heavy gauged wire to handle the load and also have it fused to an Eastern Fuse Box
Hey I have a gen1 sv650 and I am trying to make it a scrambler and would love to know what suspension front and rear if you know of any is best for actually dirt capability
Sorry for the late reply. Stock suspension. With the bash plate, you lose an inch of clearance. With the Shinkos, you gain an inch. Overall ground clearance is only 6" so you're limited to where you can go offroad. It's fine on gravel and packed dirt. Anything loose can be a challenge. FYI...Shinko 705s are bad in the wet
Absolutely loved the video. I know it’s because I was riding with those two cool guys. Thanks you two for a great ride/camping trip.
Our pleasure!
This ride had all the best, riding, fishing, camping and great motorycycle roads
I am doing this over the weekend. Just a bit anxious about the 23% steep grade...:P
It's steeper on the eastern side coming back up to the Summit
I just hit 30k on my 2015 1000. Heading to the tail of the dragon in NC/TN two weeks from today.
it's a perfect bike for riding the Dragon or any twisty road
Wow, you're a dedicated Suzuki 650 twin rider. Just seen your recent video up Sonora Pass.Just bought one of the last '23 SV 650's. Love these twins. Talked to a tech at local dealer and he said he serviced a gen 1 DL650 that had 300k miles on original engine.Another man in South America had over 270k on his. Your SV will run forever.
Wow, defitnitely a high mileage bike. Been through a lot of tires. Kept the oil changed with synthetic oil and gotten used to taken everything off to replace the air filter
Excellent video, excellent bike. Good to see you still have the DL. Sonora pass is one of my favorite roads. Moved to Idaho 35 years ago, but the roads here will never equal California's. In about a month, my brother and I will be heading up the pass to see a campground my dad took us to in 1967, then down to Sonora. I ride a '22 650 Adventure and my brother a Z900RS. The DL will be the mule. Anyways, I love VStroms and can't wait. Thanks. New sub.
If you camp on Sonora Pass, I highly recommend camping on the Western side at the campground I camped at called "Eureka Campground". It's one mile from the big campground of Kennedy Meadows (very crowded) and more expensive. The Eastern side is dispersed camping and all near Levitt Creek, very pretty.
Such a beautiful ride. I do it every year from the eastern side, never took the time to camp up there.
I usually camp on the western side, although I love the eastern side without the campground amenities too
That looks like a nice campground… hard to believe there is still snow up there
Middle of July and it's like Spring time up there in regards to river flow
I just bought a 23 650, white with gold rims.Just love it.
My Bonito gracias por enviar Los lugares que visitaron
Enjoyed the informative video and entertaining video with excellent content and production but let's be real here we're talking Wee Strom not V Strom as I owned and road a '07 V 1000 Strom which left a lot to be desired in on road and off road situations also had oil leaks associated with the main oil gallery pressure on the countershaft seal to lubricate the transmission (poor design) which dumped oil on the cross over pipe under the frame which ignited from the catalyst on the freeway at 80mph it truly was a hot running bike. YMMV
The 650 wee ström has no overheating issues. In fact, after 75K miles, I had NO issues what do ever. Just general maintenance. It's such a reliable engine. It is very limited as far as off road capability as the 6" ground clearance and weight makes it a handful offload other than mild 4x4 and fire roads
bad audio
I’ve heard nothing but great things about the V-Strom!
I've been looking at it for a first bike and by all accounts it's bulletproof. Only bad thing is having to lift the gas tank to access the air filter (which you almost never have to do, unless riding in very dusty offroad conditions). High mileage is common for these because they are reported to just run forever on regular maintenance.
@@KF1 100,000 miles no problem!
Thank you for this! Helped out a lot ! Used this for my 2005 👍🏼
My 2013 model has a similar mileage to yours, but I did 43,000 of those miles riding it around the world two up. Spent a week in Napa Valley on our way round. Off to ride the NC500 around the top of Scotland tomorrow.
Very cool. Have a great trip
Worked there when it changed to portofino across the street from Tanglewood
Sorry for the spelling errors. I was just trying to post on a different platform and testing the waters
I had GoPro videos of the ride but somehow accidentally erased them...damn
2012 V-Strom 650 was a first bike I bought my 16 year old kid as his daily high school commuter, in 2017. He loved it ! Summer, fall, winter, spring, the weather didn’t matter at all. Right gear and he was always happy. 😁 Last year my kid moved on into 2012 Honda Fury, and now the V-Strom sits in the garage all neglected. Time to revive the beast and put it on the road again ! 😁 It’s still in a relatively good shape, besides electrical problem (the cluster doesn’t work). Happy trails my brother !!!
I now have 75K on her and continues to be reliable as ever. I've taken her on mild offroad trips as well and have gone on 4x4 roads that aren't too technical. It's a heavy bike offload
Best bike I have ever owned. It does everything for me offroad and road riding
I’m looking to buy a 2012 Vstrom 650 with 32k miles now. I’m comparing it to a 2015 BMW G650GS with 16k miles. I know the Suzuki has more power and is bigger and smoother, but there is something about the Beemer that I like, especially for a knock around town bike. Hard decision.
I love the Vstrom 650. A friend of mind had a BMW 650 GS. Of the two, the vstrom is a better highway and street bike with limited offload ability; fireroads and mild single track are OK. Anything more is a challenge due to the weight and limited ground clearance. The BMW is more dirt oriented and is buzzy on the highways. The BMW is lighter with better ground clearance for dirt rides, but can be uncomfortable on the highways for long distance rides. The suzuki can carry a passenger with ease. The BMW is a bit uncomfortable for a passenger. Hope this helps your decision.
@@sdoo7441 Thank you for your input! It’s very helpful.
Any links to specific parts you used?
I purchased everything from Amazon under the electronics sight
Nice build! I'm doing the same to mine, Yamaha FZ6, which looks a lot like your bike. My area is very rural, so I ride a lot of county roads, dirt, gravel, washouts, etc. I make it on street tires, but can't wait to add more stability/traction with knobbies. How did you mount your bash plate? I have a couple of unused "ears" on the front of my engine, but don't know if mounting to those is a good idea. Don't want to break the engine case. Ride on friend! 💯💯🏍🏍
Great review thanks buddy
No problem 👍
Just reached 75,000 miles today
How did you attach the usb charger? Did you get power from a turn signal and ground?
Attached to the headlight power wire
Nice video. You're a dedicated VStrom rider. Just picked up a '22 650 Adventure. Had a '17 DL . Great bikes. If you want to see a nut on an '18 DL, look at Trail Trash ADV on youtube. He puts it thru hell. Suprising where he goes.
I'll check it out!
How long was sonora with all the stops etc ?
From the Bay Area, about 3 1/2 hours
Can you share anything about that first campsite ? Heading out there in 2 weeks solo.
Sorry for the late reply. Eureka Valley campground.
That looked like fun, hope to ride that someday soon!
Can’t wait for the movie!
Big thanx for the video!!! The SV 650 is the bike i want for me as a pure beginner!!! Cheers from Serbia 🇷🇸✌️
Helo, steve~really breathtaking footage. catch you later. ✋
Thanks 👍
Some great scenery there. I have the same model and absolutely love it. Thanks for the vid.
You bet
That’s a nice video. We will be camping there early august. Was wondering how full/empty the reservoir is. Thanks!
Have fun!
