Backhands Steffi Graf 3

Because yes, despite the urban legend, she has a (even topspin) backhand, here are some proofs ;p (from FO 87 final)
Amazing tennis point Steffi Graf 6

ROLAND GARROS 1987 Final, Graf vs. Navratilova
The GOAT!
I agree with most of these comments.Though nobody could say that Steffi's slice backhand was a weakness (infact its the grestest slice the games has ever seen), i do believe Steffi would have benefitted more by having a good topspin backhand also, especially to deal with the power coming from Seles, Davenport and the Williams sisters in later years. As great as the slice was, that was always the side players would attack and come in on.
now imagine steffi now in her prime with today's rackets, strings, and whatever else! downright scary! also steffi would be a terror with a wood racket, i have no doubt.. serena, with her shoddy footwork and suspect forehand stroke production? not so much...
1:29 and 1:47...really?!?!
0:49 Who does that but Steffi Graf?!?? :'D
phenomenal
She also hits the ball much earlier than with the forehand, doesn't she? When the ball is still rising...looks like half a second earlier almost :P
Look at her rip those things. Dang. Love a great one-handed backhand.
with this speed, ability, and athleticism, Graf will killing and destroy every player in this era right now.. they played some boring tennis, hit the ball with all body and stay back on the ground like robot..
"it's whatever" concession accepted.
it's whatever everyone knows Serena is the greatest. Bye
not according to statistics..... get your facts straight :)
tell that to their slam count, chica.
lol the only person good in graf's era was monica and monica has a losing record against Serena, Martina, Davenport, and Venus Williams. Please go home chico. lol
people who would destroy serena's current competition; people who won slams; monica herself (who was injured less than steffi was many times in her career, btw); etc
and who was graf playing after monica got stabbed?
the quality? she's playing nobodies. and actually slam count is what primarily determines the goat.
Numbers don't mean shit! It's about the quality of tennis that i look at when I call Serena better but I'm sure she can surpass steffi, but even if she doesn't Serena is still gonna be the best!
whenever serena gets 22 slams you can say that. until then....
best ever
Still not better than Serena!
wow her backhand is.. FAST!
i like the way she moves too...for me she's like the beefsteak(meat) of tennis... i'm a butcher ok, so i notice these things ^^
yeah, a clown like you
She must have been REALLY enjoyed this win after the loss in that painfully close Final at FO to Seles couple of week prior...
beauty
If you look beyond Serena's power. You could see she have lots of versatility. Someone who only have power but no other power would not win 14 GS and win her 14th at the age of almost 31 and still dominating womens tennis. Obviously all the other women these dyas are very2 powerful, so why do you think Serena kept on winning, no better explaination then her skills. Those who are just power with nothing specials is like Isner and Karlovic. You need to look beyond her power to appreciate her game.
Arancha was NEVER gonna be a good grasscourt player but I think that she did let one get away in 95 on grass against Graf!
Just goes to show how unnecessary all that grunting in the women's game really is!! And this from two of the greatest female players the world has ever produced!! Those who can, do; those who can't, grunt!!!
@pb123451508 Dude, it was sarcasm ;) The Seles fans always say she lost this match because she was not allowed 2 grunt
Come on Seles' fans! Let's be serious and honest: Graf was really better on grass! She destroyed Seles EACH time she played against Seles on grass!!!!! Her grunt had nothing to do with facts: Graf destroyed Seles 6/0. 6/1 in 1989 and 6/2 6/1 in 1992 when Seles was number one and had not been stabbed: no excuse please!!!
It's because Monica wasn't allowed 2 grunt that she missed that volley, that's sooo obvious ;D
Umm... Monica could have gotten then. After hitting the cross court she just stood there (??). Serena would have been running back at once.
because when opponents started hittin harder it's safer to defend with slices. not like against martina and chrissie they don't hit that hard that steffi was able to hit topspins against
excuse me? even when monica wan't gruntin she was able to hit deep shots and jerk steffi around. but steffi was just too sharp this day. sheeeshhhh!!
Wow!
That is the only time I have ever seen Steffi completely miss an overhead!! Gotta love Arantxa's fight!!
This reminds me of Federer!
Both players and their families had such class.
@juju1305 That also depends on the opponent, I don't think she would've lost to Sabatini in US '90 or to Vicario French '89 if she nailed a couple of backhands when she had break point in each of those matches second sets.
@TheSami75 légèreté ? Le coup droit de Graf était tout sauf léger...
@Flipboy5 I don't agree. Many people consider her sliced backhand a liability, and it is not. The bounce is so low that on fast surfaces (like the uso or Wimby) it makes it almost impossible to attack. A topspin backhand would have bounced higher and might have been easier to attack for hard hitters like Seles, Capriati, Davenport or Pierce.
@custodar If you look at some of her later matches (her finals in 1995 against sanchez vicario), she hits quite a few. It's a shot she performed less because the pace of the opponents balls was faster and a shoulder injury sustained previously prevented her to hit it in full motion like Martinez, Henin or Mauresmo did. Therefore she could only hit it below the shoulder level, mostly as a passing shot and not with full swing. It has nothing to do with mental or concentration imo
@bamibalboy She can beat them 2-1 with double spaces. xd
"In-your-face shots" LOL xD
Two lovely ladies showing true sportsmanship (I believe they are very good friends). I remember the offer of the runner-up trophy but what a lovely gesture ( I remember this too) from Steffi to let Arantxa hold the Rosewater dish up - especially after the commentators comment " I wonder if she (Arantxa) will ever lift that trophy"
I used to think her backhand was a weakness because it wasn't as hard and she would often run around it to knock a forehand. Now I see how her slice backhand was actually very effective, especially on the grass, a great complement to the power on the other side. Tennis was more interesting when it wasn't just smashing the ball back and forth.
I adore Steffi's "KOMM JETZT!!!!!" :-)))
the best player ever!!!!!!
@soulscar8 Incredible gets by Graf...the 2 most scintillating players of the last 20 years....
@soulscar8 well I would not say that but it was excellent scrambling by Graf...really great tennis in this match fom Graf...not so much by Seles...the 2 most scintillatingly good players of the last 20 years.
