Birthday greetings from Princeton, NJ. May 2008.
e immortal John Zacherly.
"Confound it, my dear!"
John never married and lived to be 98. In one of his last interviews in his NYC apartment, he was showing the interviewer some of his posters on his walls. Then he turned to the camera so they could get a close-up of his gnarled crooked fingers (from arthritis) and in that magnificent Roland voice of his said "Look kiddies, you have this to look forward to....ha ha ha." I knew him briefly when he was at the FM rock station WPLJ-FM (he had also been at WNEW-FM) in NYC (I worked at ABC two floors below him). He was hardly noticeable walking in the city alone or in the elevator in his blue jeans -- but he was a guy who was born in 1918 and never lost his cool. He died at home in New York in 2016. RIP.
I remember watching his shows on Tv many years ago. Great memories. Thanks
How handsome Zacherle was!
TVs greatest "ghoul"; often imitated, never duplicated!
Always enjoyed John as a DJ on WNEW FM and WPLJ FM in NYC back in the sixties and seventies.
Every New Year’s Eve I’d sneak into my room to watch Zacherly while my parents watched Lawrence Welk lol 😆
A great part of my childhood! He single-handedly turned me on to horror movies which I still love!
I grew up with Zach. First, when I was just a kid watching late night movies and then later when I was a young man,he was an FM disc jockey. Zach was the best.
Zack was my fav. of all time. I loved his radio program but cant remember the channei
Huh... I looked him up because he's on the Halloween Hootenanny album and honestly his voice really got on my nerves on that , especially in Sinister Purpose where he kept doing this old man laugh. Now I'm sad because he seems like exactly the sort of character I'd have enjoyed if I'd seen him as a host first. But the voice is still really annoying on the album! Maybe if I watch some clips, it'll take on a more positive association...
I found the Halloween hootenanny album because of him! Please do check out his other stuff, he is a very cool ghoul
who came cause of the movie "Brain Damage"?
Not me. I'm here because I recently browsed thru the book "The Monster Show" at our local Barnes & Noble. It was a history of horror films & it mentioned Mr Z's TV program.
@@jubalcalif9100 Just thought id say that since he voices Aylmer in that movie
So great to see Zach in this setting. Like so many, I will always remember him and his TV show as a kid, and also on WNEW-FM radio in the early 70's. "It's 10 PM in New York and I just dropped perfectly good joint out of the window"..... RIP ZACH, and thanks for so many great memories!!!
I really miss Zach. The Cool Ghoul, indeed.
I'm guessing that his show was on local New York TV. That must be why he wasn't a mystery guest. Ninety-seven or ninety-eight per cent of the viewers of this national program would never have heard of him. But 2 of the panel recognized him right off and the other 2 realized who has was. My grandmother would liked to have seen that show.
He was good looking!
He was no Rondo Hatton, but Mr Z was indeed one handsome chap.
He was a poor choice for that show: even without his name and face paint, his voice was a dead giveaway.
Shame this ended so fast, but the minute you hear that voice, if you loved science fiction and horror and you were a kid in Philadelphia (or New York), you KNEW who he was. RIP, John Zacherle. We really miss you.
spengoole is better
If you don't know how to spell his name properly, maybe he is not better, just different. It is spelled "Svengoolie."
Wondering how old you are James. If you weren't there, you just don't know, so just don't talk.
Svengoolie is fun to watch, but he doesn't hold a candle to Zach.Without John Zacherley there would be no Svengoolie. If you ask Svengoolie, I am pretty sure he would agree with me.
The "Chinless wonder" was kinda cute.
WNEW
WNEW-FM . . . WNEW (1130) was an AM station.
I just recently learned of zacherly..down here in new orleans we had morgus the magnificent
Joey Bishop still unable to speak, how did he ever stay on with the stuttering, and stupid looks?Onwe of the most UNFUNNY comedians that ever lived!
I have to agree, what a hack Bishop was...
ROLAND, the best in horror movie genre! R.I.P.
John Zacherle was a class act who will be sorely missed by all who loved him on Saturday afternoons while he showed old horror movies and made us all laugh in the process! Goodbye, John, and thanks for the great memories!
Farewell, Zach. You will definitely be missed. Good night, whatever you are!!
I used to watch the show every Saturday. He was the coolest host ever.
Zach was truly one of a kind. GREAT entertainer.
The cool ghoul
Rest in peace John Zacherley. God bless.
Long live the memory of the late, great Zacherle! xoxo The Clarences
I thought Arlene was referring to a real live wife, but maybe she was referring to "my dear" also called Isabelle.
That's right. I know he had a girlfriend out in CA at one point, and he'd go back and forth to see her, but he never married. The routine with the wife in the coffin was part of all the shows he did as a horror host, both in NY and as Roland in PA before that.
The "Cool Ghoul"!
I'm confused , Arlene Francis said " I know this man and I know about his wife.... but on another video it says Zach was never married... does anyone know about his marital state? I hope he's still alive I'm a huge huge fan!!
His "wife" was generally off-screen, in a coffin.
And he never addressed her by name; she was simply "My Dear."
Thanks for sharing love Zach :)
Video provided by Rob Goldston.
Proof positive that John Zacherle is a truly handsome man!
Don't go crazy......he's quite average looking... gr8 dude, though.
Homo alert!
This must have been 10/30/60 Bennett Clef says his son wearing a Kennedy button.
It was more of a joke. Zacherley's t.v. wife was never seen, just referred to as MY DEAR ... I think she lived in a laundry hamper on the show. John was never married. I've known him since 1969 -- today is his 94th birthday!
@moosisha : I believe Arlene Francis was referring to "My Dear," the unseen character that was part of Zach's routine. In other words, she not only recognized him, she knew enough to refer to one of the frequent bits of schtick.
I guess either Dolly Mae either had a bad hair day or she was in disguise for Halloween!
Dorothy...please, what is up with the wig?
What a delight! I've always loved John Zacherle! Seeing him looking so handsome, without his ghoul makeup, is amazing! Anyway, I noted that Arlene Francis refers to Zach's wife. I've never found any mention of marriage in his personal life. Does anyone have any information about her?
On his TV show: "My Dear."
