They display a foolish level of frugality, thereby giving us a good laugh. Koreans say "말짱 도루묵이네," when all your efforts go for naught, as in: - 아침에 세차했는데 오후에 비가 올 때 (when you washed your car this morning but it starts to rain in the afternoon) - 열심히 공부했는데 시험이 취소되었을 떄 (when you studied so hard only to find the exam cancelled) It is a weird expression, really, considering its literal meaning is "it is entirely a sailfin sandfish."...
