Lagoon Creek Nursery Slot rock fishway
Video showing juvenile snakehead and empire gudgeon migrating upstream through a novel Nursery Slot fishway designed for weaker swimming juvenile diadromous species. Footage captured during recent fishway assessment monitoring in Nth QLD on Lagoon Creek. The juvenile fish utilise a boundary layer of reduced velocity created by the shallow stepped slot, enabling them to undertake their life-cycle dependent migration from saltwater habitats (downstream) to upstream freshwater wetlands. Interestingly, all of the snakehead gudgeons were smaller than we have previously recorded with 46 individuals between 23-45 mm.

Fantastic to see a great innovation that helps both the farmer and the environment. Glyphosate should be phased out cos it's killing bees and other pollinators!

The stands of aquatic vegetation encourages the presence of the aquatic microfauna. The vegetation not only offers protection form visual predators, but also as a platform for food source. The stems and fronds of the plants become colonized by Diatoms. This is the slimy substance often felt when touching the fronds, stems of such plants. Very simply: this mucilage of diatoms is then consumed by many Cladocerans. Tiny little crustaceans (Chydoridae), often <0.5mm, feeding on the mucilage of diatoms on the plant stems/fronds. These in turn are fed upon by micro-predators such as Copepods (Cyclopoids, Calaonids), that are then eaten by larger predators such a beetles, mayflies, dragon flies. And then in turn eaten by small fish and birds. The benthic region amongst these plants are often colonized by Ostracods, a tiny little crustacean called "seed shrimps" and also other Cladocerans. These feed on the detritus that rains down form above. So the presence of aquatic plants has a snow ball effect on the ecology of wetlands. Rob Walsh. Australian Waterlife.
