Why We Created a Rubric to Grade Backpacks: A Complete Breakdown 👇
In this video, we’re diving deep into how we created a standardized and objective rubric to grade backpacks 🎒, something we felt was missing in the market. There’s currently no widely accepted way to score and compare backpacks based on both individual features and overall performance, so we decided to take on the challenge! 💪
🤔 What’s in Our Rubric?
We developed four main categories to score backpacks:
1️⃣ Design
2️⃣ Components
3️⃣Marketing
4️⃣Unique Value Proposition
Within each of these categories, we created sub-categories to drill down into the finer details. 🔎
For example, under "Design," we look at the bag's function, layout, and material. "Marketing" includes factors like the company and its brand appeal, while "Unique Value Proposition" looks at what sets the backpack apart, or what we call its "flavor." 🤤
🏆 How We Score and Normalize Results
We score each sub-category on a 1-5 scale, and then we weigh ⚖️ the scores based on the type of bag (e.g., school bag vs. hiking bag) to ensure a fair comparison. Finally, we normalized the total score out of 100 to give us a final grade, which allows us to evaluate backpacks on both their individual parts and their overall quality. This system helps us compare backpacks across different niches and gives you all a reliable baseline for making informed purchasing decisions 💸, cuz ya know, bags be expensive.
This rubric allows us to objectively and fairly grade bags, ensuring that every aspect is considered and compared across a level playing field. 🫡

OMG. Can we have a bellroy reviewer without any obsession of water bottle??????? Is that what bellroy is for???? What a shame!
I don't think it's necessarily that all reviewers are obsessed with waterbottles, it's that a good chunk of people who buy bags tend to want a bag that fits a water bottle.

The carry strap lets it down. The padding is on one end so if you swap between front and back carry it just doesn’t work. The padding on the strap also catches on things a LOT! If they changed this it would be an amazing sling.
I agree. I wish they also put a better dangle stopper than the plastic clip provided. it doesn't do anything. i get the concept, but it would have been cool to have a slidable padded strap that went over the webbing for more adjustment points maybe?
@@EmeraldsDailyCarry Yes! the keeper for the excess strap adjustment is terrible!! Everything feels too loose.
I noticed that you dropped the airtag loosely into the bag, but there is actually an airtag compartment in the bellroy tag on the inside! A cool little feature. Also, great video!
@@milocatto I put my AirTag in one of the stretch mesh pockets on the side. I find the actual AirTag slot they give you to be way too tight and not placed optimally. It ends up taking valuable real estate from the precious bottom volume. I carry a lot of larger flatter items so this configuration just doesn’t work for me.

Got this bag for £85. Good deal, but I'm not a fan of the fact that you have to close the zip and open the other side, just to get something in the corner of the other side. Also the holes, making the water resistance, no good
@@mohammedfaiisal glad you were able to find a good deal on the bag! Yeah, I agree with those criticisms. They are definitely present on the regular Venture sling as well.
@@EmeraldsDailyCarry my favourite bellroy sling is the 2.5L venture sling. If that was 3L but slightly slimmer and was in a chimera design, that would be perfect

The bean test is brilliant. I have been very frustrated with the misleading liter designation on most backpacks and duffels. Also, bean are much better than metal balls. Metal balls with destroy your vacuum. Excellent content! Well done!

Your detail on the strap is also appreciated. Most reviewers don’t get into the practical aspect of strap ergos.

My Chimera Sling had a missing zipper pull on the big mesh giga pocket. I reached out to Bellroy, they sent me a replacement zipper pull, it arrived within a week. They were very classy in handling my rant about the missing zipper pull in a Chimera 😅
Oh weird. Glad that they fixed that for you. I’ve heard some back and forth things about Bellroy’s customer service.
They actually do manufacture it! I bought one direct from Bellroy on Monday (Sept 16, 2024). Oddly, they did not promote the drop on socials or anything, I just happened to check the page and it was in stock. Maybe I should get a lottery ticket...
I got mine as well on that second drop, i got an add on instagram but i thought it was a fluke but when i went on their website i saw them available so i bought mine 😬
Yeah saw that. They must have had some back stock? But I wouldn’t anticipate this being a part of their regular product line. Still a limited release.

Does an ipad 11 inch fit in this?
i have an M4 iPad Pro and it DOES fit without a case. i tried with with a folio style case and a magic keyboard case. it will have to sit in the middle of the sling and lean up against the back wall in order for it to close properly. If you have it lying flat on the back wall, there isn't enough height clearance to close the bag. If you put an iPad in here, I don't think you would be able to put much else in the main compartment aside from the dedicated zippers and slip pockets. But if you're carrying EDC and iPad as your work station, I think this could work! There's definitely enough room for you to carry a case separately within the sling, it just adds too much height with it on to close properly. Hope this helps! 🤓
