78. The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkowski (Part 1) "You're either gonna fight or you're gonna f***."
We are so excited to talk about this trilogy and we're going to talk a lot. The Winner's Curse came out in 2014, a year before ACOTAR, and it does not get the attention it deserves (especially when compared to books in the same genre).

We were going to do the three parts but we got lost somewhere around kidnapping number five and so we're wrapping up the Trouble with Kings this week. www.goodreads.com/book/show/2878252-the-trouble-with-kings Our next book has got us all worked up though. Are you a Mel or a Flian? This book was a bit troubling for us, in large part due to it's lackluster take on the same Crown/Court Duel plot points. Still better than The Fourth Wing though... Also, gentlemen: there are only two types of mustaches and you can't win with either. Our hero sure doesn't. www.goodreads.com/book/show/2878252-the-trouble-with-kings psst....Fil-ee-en is not how you say ...

    Just finished the hanging city today - couldn’t put the book down (I started it two days ago) I think my only criticisms of it were that it felt super rushed in the mid to ends section and there could have been more build up / stakes for lark being caught by her dad but I really wish there was a second story after it because it ended with something that could have opened it into a series

    Just discovered your podcast this last week from Sherwood Smith's website and loved listening to your thoughts on Crown Duel! I loved 'Trouble With Kings' as well and would be interested to hear your take on it, but I think that's the book where the main character has amnesia at the start and keeps getting kidnapped and doesn't know who to trust? The princess party you mentioned sounds like 'A Posse of Princesses' ? Unless I'm remembering completely wrong, it has been a while since I last read them. Sasharia En Garde by Sherwood Smith is also a book I really enjoyed that falls into the same category as Crown Duel from what I remember, have you guys read this one?

      Katie has only read Crown Duel and I've dabbled in a few of her other works but not Sasharia en Garde. Just read the description and this looks phenomenal, adding to the TBR shelf. (Also, let us know if you have any other authors you'd like to see featured on the pod. We're always on the hunt for recommendations.)

    36:42 Bran comes off as someone who is easily influenced by others he’s close to (which is like totally me lol) and seeing that he knows the Shevraeth, I can see why he would be okay with him as a king.

    Would love to hear more of your casting choices! I think a young Henry Cavil for Savona. And yeah, Shevreath looks similar to Legolas in my mind too. Nimiar is described like Anna Kendrick. Can’t seem to find a Mel though, not too many auburn haired actresses. And her being petit is most important. Enjoyed this. Thanks!

    I read this for the first time when I was 14, and as naive as Mel, so I rode the ride and didn't see it coming. Now when I reread I still find myself hoping that Mel grows up and falls in love.

    I enjoy hearing your thoughts on this book :) I have been wondering what your thoughts are on character growth in the main character's love interest? It is the one thing, that I feel like is missing in both Graceling and Crown Duel - it seems like the protagonist needs to grow to realize her feelings, but the love interest is already there, and and I am struggling a bit to find the character flaw in both Shevraeth and Poe.

    I loved Crown Duel 😊. I read it when I was 14, and then reread it las week, and this is how I found your podcast. I really liked hearing your thoughts on the book. I look forward to hearing a podcast on The Trouble With Kings, since I remember reading it just after I finished Crown Duel the first time. I could not remember anything about The Trouble with Kings, so I tried picking it up yesterday, but I really didn't enjoy it and put it down again. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on that book, since I agree with you on Crown Duel but not The Trouble with Kings 🤔.

      @@notanotherheroine thak you for answering :) I was just very confused in the beginning of the book - I didn't really feel like could visualize the scenes when reading the first many chapters, and I didn't really feel like I got to know the characters at all. I felt like it was a bit 'messy' - and there I had a totally different experience when reading Crown Duel. I remember really liking Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore, but I am a little afraid that 14 year old me likes it more than 29 year old me would 😅. So it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that one as well.

    25:10 Bran kind of comes off like a golden retriever personality or a go with the flow kind of guy but honestly, I thought Bran would play more of a role in Mel’s life since she looks up to him so much, but instead he plays a passive role.

    • @notanotherheroine
      @notanotherheroine Рік тому

      that's what we both found so annoying about him, he should've been more involved and had every opportunity to do so, especially in Court Duel....but funny you should mention Golden Retrievers. Our Pod mascot is a golden you can hear chiming in during episode 2!

    5:53 omg haha I didn’t realize this trope was called “enemies to lovers” when I first read it but I certainly see the appeal. For me what made me keep on reading, it was the secret letters between Mel and Vidanric. I was kinda of internally rooting for them to get together the whole time reading it and luckily that paid off! 😂
