An analysis of what makes gameplay stylish in Devil May Cry. Thanks to MartinG for helping me with the Spanish captions. I needed to free space on my harddrive, so here's a lazily made FPS highlights. Most of the high quality clips are from the past 2 years. Older ones from a laptop. Will make a bloopers FPS video soon and finally my harddrive can breathe. Music: Bones & Lyson - Bentley Bones - PixelatedTears (ft. Yung Lean) Dioxyde - Geist

BGM: Goreshit - Henrietta (all washed up reprise) Goreshit - Sleepless After abandoning this project for 3 years, I finally completed it. Too many people to thank, so I'll do a proper thanks in a future project. Hopefully this suffices for now. The DMC4 Dante gameplay is from early 2017, right after I stopped using claw. You may recognize part of it from the collaboration video "Our Playground"...

Music by Lantlos. Lyrics are loosely translated for legibility and because I don't know German. None of this gameplay will be in the final video as they are leftovers. The gameplay quality in the final video will be about the same, maybe slower-paced. I also sped up some of the footage from turbo speed to simulate 2x turbo in order to fit a time limit. This is a quickly done video.

Done on 2021-10-29. Maybe I'll return to speedrunning sometime soon with gigazip and the newer strats. However, to get anywhere in the top 5 will take exponentially longer. Sub 1hr is crazy. 27:45 - 30:08 was a pause break to do something

DMC4: Vergil Judgement Cut Glitches [Tutorial]
My only complaint about SE was the horrible way it handled the taunt system. And I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up or mentioned.
I still come back to this fc*ing Video here and there , It just shows how good and Even ahead of your Time you where / are . The Pattern Usage , One of the First who utilised the Fullhouse Guard Fullhouse Pattern ( its not on 2be tutorial lol ) and other things . You really are one of the best Pattern / Relaxed Players.
Какая у тебя раскладка у Вергилия?
Kicking myself for not getting into dmc3 when I was 4 years old Thankfully these videos let me pretend like I was there! Please make another
you got a like based off the thumbnail straight off
Awesome stuff. Btw is there any way you could make the backgrounds mod downloadable? The links don't seem to be working
Oh man that meme editing really took me back. It's actually kinda well implemented too considering the time. Great video.
Personally I have no interest in "helpless punching bag" enemies. I much prefer aggressive enemies with varied types and patterns, that create interesting combat situations depending on the environment and enemy composition. That's why I like games like DMC1, Bayonetta 1, God Hand and the original Doom games so much. The enemies control space in unique ways and force you to constantly assess a dynamic situation. For me, stylish combat requires real danger and a sense of back and forth. I like it when there are high stakes and risk and reward, not only with respect to the current fight but to the playthrough as a whole, that's why high score play in bullet hell shmups is also fascinating.
then you should play dmc4 on dmd. the enemies can escape from combos there.
This is....... BEAUTIFUL. Your analysis on how to style in DMC is on point. You can clearly see he made a lot of research. Hell, some of the points you mentioned never crossed my mind. One thing I didn't like about this video is the low amount of likes. Keep it up my man. You deserve it
boom headshot sync goes hard
Thank you for helping me discover Be'lakor. Also... Obviously, your combos are sick 🔥
hey dude! love this series! by any chance, are you delusionarykiller?

I don't think dmc needs inertia, at least it the way it was in dmc4

Yo Delousinary Killer How's it hanging
One thing I'm sorta curious about is just stuff from DMC4 around it's release/basic Let's Plays from people at that time. UA-cam lets you sort search results by upload date but you can't invert it to start from the oldest, so I haven't managed to find any yet
Those Vergil JCs at the end really do look immaculate, the execution on display is incredible. Great video!
22:47 I can't find the whirling whirlinator video !
ua-cam.com/video/swqYlb7XSQE/v-deo.html it's listed in the pastebin
insane capcom took off 4 on steam, and leaves the worse dmc4se online
yo can you make a video covering ground combat
I should but it probably won’t happen anytime soon
@@Astheniumn real but man dmc ground combat been starving
Damn, this video blew up. Congrats on the viewcount brotha
I dobt want them expanding dmc But instead make a new ip with dmc and bayonetta combat
Finally got round to finishing the video and I really like you said at 23:29 in regards to mental stacking. In most games the sequences of muscle memory that players memorize that just the moves from the movelist, but in DMC you can make up your own like Gun Rave into JC-Rave and building these sequences of muscle memory for utility is something the games don't teach and players have to figure out. Find that once most players realize how to stay in the air, move around with the enemy and catch them they learn the langauage of spatial control in these games with the moves/abilities being the words, the grammar the effect said moves have on the relationship of the players space to the enemy, and the punctuation the mechanical understanding of height gain/loss, spatial control like hard movement such as back dashes for attacks and moving forward while slashing in the air or inertia transferred between moves etc. Especially with the explanation of tropes in style with AI Exploits and environmental hazards etc. Definitely a highlight for the archives!
Damn, This video is seriously good. Concept of style in action game is always vaguely dispersed in my brain and it was really hard to organize. Thank you for great work, and I'm genuinely happy to see you creating contents again recently.
Give me your top 3 dmc's now
Great video, definitely deserves more exposure. Doniguri would be proud❤
DMC 4 will forever be the most stylish one thanks to the bonkers inertia movement, only need to see dante guard fly once to know that
I really want them to bring the movement back. I’m not a big fan of this whole RE engine stuff
@@Dres2000just use mods to add it back in along with inertia.
now we need a stylish single games ranking, things like DMC, Persona 5, Warframe, Metal Gear Rising, RE4 remake, spiderman etc. DMC wins in having a full stylish series baring 2 and the remake story
Lol maybe replace Spider-Man with Ultrakill
As a game developer this is one of the things I really wished someone would do for a video essay analysis. This is a great treasure for us gamedevs, and im sure if other game devs would see this too they would say the same. <3 thanks man!
Why do some of these enemies look immortal?
Infinite health mods were used in some instances
Bro When Devil May Cry 3 came out and we started busting the style system wide open 🤘 Good times good times
love this video, i cant wait to reference back to this when i get into style play myself
Killer video by a being of grand delusion. Glad you're putting this to record. Good job 👍
Yes I love Devil May Cry besides DMC2 and the reboot.
The best example of glitch styling I’ve seen is Judgement Trick in DMC5
I think it speaks volumes that out of the top 10 best selling games, the only game that’s not in the series of RE or monster hunter is DMC5. I really hope capcom sees how big dmc is getting and has something in the works, aside from the anime and mobile game
I think dmc being the best selling game franchise was have to do few being able be different enough to not be call "we have dmc in home" and only one not changed the formula so much like god of war and Bayonetta
If they DO release new DMC game, then I hope that they add more varieties for the costume selections. They should have all the costumes from previous games for us as options to change/select to, for example : Dante Outfit from DMC3, Corrupted Vergil(Sparda) Outfit From DMC4. Its way better than having just a simple recolor option..
I hope not id like thid to be the last game theres no point furrhering it its an end of an era
@@Milz.T yeah I was really sad about this w dmc 5. I guess they were saying that they wouldn’t be able to do more costumes cuz they have to create them in real life and then scan them? At least that’s what I heard. But come on.. modders did a great job
@@andimari9194street fighter 6, resident evil village have different costumes for you use in the gameplay so the whole "we can't put more costumes in the game" is just capcom simple said we don't wanna put more costumes in the game
tnx
amazing great work make us more
It is very satisfying to hear someone organize these points. The fact that players have essentially reached an unspoken agreement on style makes me feel there is a great deal of objectivity to the beauty of this series. Most of these points are relevant to what I do, but I have never thought about them so precisely. The most important thing about this video other than the meticulous structure and attention to detail is that it was a necessity. Eventually this had to be done. Adding more either in the form of particulars or examples (which could just go on forever) would detract from its standalone value. Maybe someone can zoom in on a specific mechanic, but as far as clearly outlining the territory, it is highly unlikely anyone will (or can) ever improve on this. This is also a niche subject you need a great deal of individuality, passion, and fearlessness to explore, which is getting rarer. There is really nothing to add or subtract from this video. There is a lot of disposable stuff on this site and almost universally a lack of willingness to craft a true work, so a video like this makes the world a better place.
Ojalá algún día pueda jugar así xd
Im glad you are here with us and making such good videos.
Fantastic video. The breakdown of the various elements of style was super thorough, which I know is really difficult because a lot of these elements don't really have proper names as decided on by the community. This video isn't just an examination of style in play, but also a great guide for people who might not understand why people enjoy this stuff so much or what their own gameplay might be missing. Great work.
