The character who manipulates a clock is Jareth the Goblin King from the Jim Henson movie Labyrinth. It's a fun fantasy movie and he's played by rock musician, David Bowie.

I've already talked to other (HALO fans) people on other sites many times, and they all keep forgetting the same thing, every time. 1. The quantity, quality and variety of thermal weapons in WH40K are an order of magnitude greater than in HALO in any era, even in the age of Forerunners. Flood has no means of defense against powerful thermal weapons, like any biological creature. 2. For the WH40K factions, it is enough to selectively destroy only planets, and not blow up entire suns, in order to get rid of the Flood. And unlike Halo, where planets simply break apart, in WH40K we deal with thermal destruction. That is, on the fragments of the planet, Flood will not be able to survive and escape, like in HALO. 3. Flood will never defeat Chaos, because Flood is just organic AI, and Gods are Gods, their minds are not contained in limited bodies. In addition, Flood can never infect Chaos demons, or Imperial saints, because they are not made of living flesh. 4. In wh40k there were cases where various organic creatures tried to eat or assimilate Necrons. Including the method that Flood uses. Everything always ended with the Necron nanomachines (which replace their blood) simply eating up their enemies from the inside. 5. Ceramite should not be used by anyone as a some kind gold standard for armor in the 40k world. Having maximum strength is not its direct function. Imperium has many materials tens and hundreds of times stronger than ceramite. Ceramite is only popular because it was specifically designed to resist thermal and energy weapons. And everyone is aware of his susceptibility to kinetic damage. Flood is a very serious threat. But they are nothing that 40K galaxy has to deal with every day. Just another dangerous faction.

So, they do have tanks and planes in the lore, but because the game is a Skirmish Game, tanks are kind of out of place.

What makes you think the Emperor _could_ have done something? He couldn't have removed the nails without killing even Angron, because they were some kind of crazy Dark Age tech. We also know that part of the deal for the knowledge of warpcraft he made with the chaos gods in order to create the primarchs was that half of them would turn traitor. That means that there's literally some fate alteration stuff happening here, too. Remember also, that Angron is supposed to be a 40k-tier super-empathetic therapist. Him being un-corrupted would have stopped a good chunk of the Heresy long before it began, or he'd be able to talk down at least enough enemy primarchs that he'd stack the odds in the good guy's favour. He'd be too impactful on the story if he wasn't taken out. At best, he would have been the new Ferrous Manus of our hypothetical alternate setting, with his legion being the super "cares about civilians' well-being a whole lot" group. He was totally boned for reasons entirely outside of his control, and is a massive, 40k-tier tragic character.

Since you just read the primer it might make sense to read a war story focused through the eyes of normal guardsmen. Such as gaunts ghost trilogy. eisenhorn, if you would like a detective kind of story with an inqusitor. Its not a battlefield story, or a world changing story, but it is a character focused tale book series. Dawn of fire novel focuses more so on space marines and a little bit on bigger than life characters. And for a different/xeno point of view, there is brutal kunnin a fun story of orcs adventuring across the galaxy, and the infinite and the devine a tale of 2 mighty necrons who are surprisingly charismatic. Personal note: these books are considered introductionary, because they dont go too deeply into the lore, and yet can be enjoyed by anyone and could encourage people to read more lore heavy books.

I haven't seen any reference to Jewish factions but the two main factions are Christian and Islamic who both seem to be holding the line in their own way

#1 recommendation is the book “15 hours”. Then in no particular order Mechanicum , Master of Mankind, Damocles Gulf, Shadows of Treachery. The last one is it anthology the rest are standalone. Finally Eisenhorn is my favorite 40k book series

I appreciate the reactions but your takes have been full of absolutes thus far. The emperor possessed foresight when he was still walking amongst men...but he explicitly told Ra Endymion that it wasn't perfect or all-encompassing, it was like looking through fog. He also debated with Malcador the possible Heresy scenario, which Primarch would take what role and all of that, in the end the actual Heresy caught him by surprise, his time window closed up on him sooner than expected. He is powerful, yes, but the way you are now talking about him makes you sound like a former loyalist Lorgar (which I find ironic given how dismissive your other reaction was)...that is to say: he is something, but he ain't all that.

I’ve been checking trench crusade out. So far very cool, Scannerbarkly is THE lore UA-camr, “a verbal account of 1099”, or the timeline might be a good start. So far they have multiple deamon factions, multiple Christian factions, a Muslim faction (and they are currently reveling a lovecraftian outsider faction)
