It's time for stacks of old VHS tapes to go for recycling at The Butterfly Garden! But first, let's archive some interesting bits and pieces. Oh, and some other fab stuff, both old and new, from here, there and everywhere... Please check my other channels for more cool re-edits, enhancements, and occasional original work! Well, I think they're cool ;o) P.S. I never monetise. All content here derives from copyright material elsewhere. Any adverts you may see will be due to legitimate 3rd-party copyright claims.
the Prisoner (1967) theme
Episode 1 extended final scene and end titles featuring the iconic theme by Ron Grainer.
From the 40th Anniversary DVD, mixing the original (unbroadcast) edit and the 1967 broadcast version.
Just for fun, I made my own Special Edition of the entire first episode (Arrival) combining both versions. Here is just the final couple of minutes.
Full changes included: play at the original 24fps (35mm) instead of 25fps (PAL TV), but maintain the already-corrected audio pitch of the 40th Anniversary edition; reinstate the full original final scene; remix the original mono audio (because the new Dolby stereo track echoes and is slightly out-of-sync); omit the two 'Rover rubber attack faces' (which featured the same actor, not Patrick McGoohan); add a few extra seconds of The Taxi Driver, No 2's face when the chair appears, No 6 hiding in the bushes, the Woman in the Stone Boat, the approach to the helicopter; omit annoyances (No 2's words "water, electricity" in the helicopter, half of No 6's pacing back and forth in the cottage before smashing the radio); fix various missing frames (including the clumsy restart after the freeze-frame during Rover's first appearance); digitally restore the end 'slam' of prison bars over No 6's face; stabilise and enhance the end credits.
Colour-matching between the two versions remains imperfect, but I learnt such a lot about video editing (and the importance of avoiding unnecessary colour space conversions) during this project.
Darn it, this video has been blocked in the UK :o(

Opening theme and titles for BBC's Strictly Come Dancing 2004 (series 1) which was won by Natasha and Brendan. Source video from Vimeo, blended with snippets broadcast more recently. The only complete online copy I can find of these series 1 titles has a bar of timecode across the middle. During lockdown, I started trying to edit back in the missing detail frame-by-frame, but gave up due to the...

Opening titles and theme tune from the first series of ITV Granada's 'Watching' by Jim Hitchmough Emma Wray sings 'What Does He See in Me?' by Charles Hart This video repair plan was simple enough: blend several versions of the opening titles from the DVD to remove as many digital artefacts as possible, then scale-up and use avisynth to sharpen and clean. It turned out a bit more complicated th...
Cheek to Cheek (1935)

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance cheek to cheek in the 1935 RKO movie 'Top Hat'. Having just discovered Avisynth video filters, this clean-up of the version currently on BBC iPlayer looks pretty neat - except for the vertical scratches, which I've still not got to grips with. Compare with this restored version: ua-cam.com/video/HLBIcyuXCDU/v-deo.html Music Video Vault have done a superb job...

Opening theme and titles for BBC's Strictly Come Dancing 2018 (series 16) which was won by Stacey and Kevin. A minor recut with tweaks, introducing the celebs and their pro dancers in a slightly different order. Missing frames are interpolated back for some segments to smooth out jerky motion. #StrictlyComeDancing
Dancing in the Dark (widescreen)

Just for fun, a tilt-and-scan version of the original classic dance (ua-cam.com/video/94ut2TBaAjc/v-deo.html) to fill your widescreen display. The hands and feet are out-of-shot every now and then, but it's mostly all there. Enjoy! Tilt-and-scan is the vertical equivalent of pan-and-scan; it crops the image top and bottom instead of at the sides. The amount of cropping needs to be adjusted cons...

Fred Astaire once said, "Either the camera will dance, or I will." In the original version of this classic dance (ua-cam.com/video/94ut2TBaAjc/v-deo.html) the camera does move perhaps more than it needs to, so for fun I ran the clip through a stabilizing filter and, without any further intervention, this is what emerged. It's rather zoomed-in, so there's quite a bit of cropping, but it's smooth...

Romance with style and grace in New York's Central Park, where Hollywood Greats, Cyd Charisse and Fred Astaire, are together again, dancing in the dark. The scene was shot on Thursday 6th / Friday 7th November 1952 and released in Vincente Minnelli's MGM movie musical 'The Band Wagon' in 1953. Cyd remembered 'Dancing in the Dark' as her favourite ever number, and later recalled that Fred told h...

Notwithstanding the persuasive propaganda untruths told by Vote Leave, Mark Easton, BBC Home Editor, summarises the reality behind the Brexit vote: "Many communities... felt that change was happening to their communities, demographic change, free movement within the EU, immigration generally meant that communities they lived in were changing, the shops were changing... people would say that the...

"These are pretty difficult times. Serious divisions in the United States, major political problems here in Britain, weakness in Germany, challenges to the President in France and, meanwhile, the Ukraine war, totally unnecessary and appallingly destructive, grinds on. And, all the time, the real over-arching problem, the climate crisis which we're all facing, is getting closer. Have I left anyt...
