The Male Characters In The Last of Us Analysis
The male characters in The Last of us are mostly the same trope: the male protector trope. Bill, Joel and Henry are all protector characters who protect Frank, Ellie and Sam, respectively. This is a tragic trope that shapes the way characters act and exist overall. The Male Protector trope increasingly stands in a more positive light instead of the toxic Protector Boyfriend or Father, for example. Protector tropes are not exclusive to men. However, lately, the male characters have been through more subversions than the female. That’s because of a shift in our views of masculinity in contrast with toxic masculinity. Bill and Joel have a very lonesome, violent side but because they have been lonely and suffered so much is why they value so much the person they’re protecting: Frank and Ellie. At the same time Bill and Joel seem like very tough, unbeatable characters, Frank and Ellie are their Achilles tendon. The beauty of Protector characters - Bill and Joel - is that they are broken people who, despite suffering, still hang on to their humanity - Frank and Ellie.

The Meaning Behind Shadow and Bone ☀️
Переглядів 247Рік тому
Shadow and Bone season 2 is coming this month. After reading the books, I was pleasantly surprised by Alina's journey. I usually don't read YA because it's not my cup of tea but the Shadow and Bone trilogy satisfied me with the character development. The strongest points in Leigh Bardugo's writing are the characters. Alina is no exception, standing out from most other YA main characters. Bardug...
Berserk's Strengths

It's been a year since I first read Berserk and I still can't get it out of my head. In light of the two negative-leaning reviews I did on two arcs, I would like to make a more positive video on Berserk talking about its strongest elements. I enjoyed reading through most of it, and I would like to analyse these elements. The thing I first noticed was the tropes of light and darkness, juxtaposed...
God of War Ragnarok's Redemption Story Analysis

In this video essay, on How to Redeem Kratos, we'll explore the typical role of the hero whilst comparing it to Kratos as a character to better understand why the ending was unexpected but expected, especially having into account how most classic fantasy stories end. God of War Ragnarok has an impactful ending that redeems Kratos from his past mistakes by opening his heart, as Faye asked. Key e...
The Importance of Motherhood in House of the Dragon

If there's one thing I've seen people negatively regarding in House of the Dragon is the birthing scenes. In this House of the Dragon video essay, I explore how the birthing scenes are essential to be depicted as graphic as the jousts and battles to come. In medieval times, becoming a mother was a dangerous matter filled with pain from beginning to end with many risks. The Targaryens have added...
The True Legacy in House of the Dragon

The Targaryens are known for many things: dragons, conquest, and creating the Seven Kingdoms. Their legacy is explored in House of the Dragon on all fronts. There are dragons and characters speak of their dangers. Viserys's reign is a peaceful one but he struggles to keep it united, like his predecessors. Beyond these obvious things that everyone remembers the Targaryens for, there's another le...
Returning to Berserk | Fantasia Arc Review

Alas, we have reached the end of my reviews of Berserk. The Fantasia arc is ongoing, starting in volume 36, so this video is much shorter than the other reviews. The significant events so far have been Rickert realising who Griffith truly is, Isma joining the party, and Casca regai...
Why Both the Greens And Blacks are Right | House of the Dragon Essay 🐲

The internet has divided itself into Greens and Blacks, for Aegon or Rhaenyra Targaryen. In this House of the Dragon video essay, I will first explore the legitimacy of Aegon and Rhaenyra in terms of Westerosi law. What strengths Aegon's and Rhaenyra's claims? It comes from Jaehaerys's Council of 101 to the King's word as law. Religion, tradition and family values also influenced especially the...

The Satire of Power in The Boys

It is no secret that The Boys is a show with a ton of satire. The Boys mocks superheroes as it is a widely popular subgenre, subverting tropes and mirroring some characters to their DC and Marvel counterparts. How Our Flag Means Death Explores Masculinity 🏳️🌈

This Our Flag Means Death video essay talks about queer pirates (with NO queerbaiting), toxic masculinity and masculinity, and bullying - matters still very important to talk about today. Besides using the popular trope of pirates, it reinvents pirates by exploring modern-day issues that still contribute to men's ...

i feel like Lost Children chapter has a lot of character development for it to be filler
alicent is like... the most complex character on that show. its like poetry. love this character. played beautifuly by olivia.
Lol, Alicent season 2 finale go burr.😅
I'm for the Greens, because House Hightower is my favorite in Westeros, because I think Aegon's rights seem more objective to me, and because I think that from a political point of view, the kingdom has rather interest in being governed by the Greens. I don't have a problem with the fact that some people prefer to support the Blacks, but what annoys me is that most of the time, the arguments of Rhaenyra's supporters are extremely simplistic, caricatured and superficial (Otto and Alicent are mean because they're "plotting", Rhaenyra is nice because she's a Targaryen and her daddy named her heir). This way of reducing everything to feelings and a question of good and evil is annoying, because it shows firstly the extent to which some completely miss the richness and complexity of Martin's work, and because that the Dance of Dragons is above all a POLITICAL conflict, and that reducing its analysis to that of a family dispute is in fact very impoverishing in the debate. On the other hand, a certain number of Rhaenyra supporters often fall into bad faith and double standards: what seems completely acceptable to them on the one hand seems scandalous to them on the other. Who can honestly claim that the Blacks are not also ready to plot or that they do not defend their own interests, just like the Greens ? Conspiracy is not an identity, it is a method. It is obvious that if the Hightowers had dragons, they would not employ the same strategy to gain power and influence.
Where did you go? This was an amazing video.
I tried the channel but I need to earn a living ahah. I've been thinking about returning to it but I'm not 100% Thanks for the support
@@raerants I understand, but would love to see more videos in the future 💙
I mean, that's how it should be. In my opinion, this story should be about two sides of the same coin, who both feel are justified in their actions, either to themselves or the realm. It's just a question of which side you feel is more justified, and even then, it could be heavily debated
Loved ur perspective
I don't think steede was most masculinity he thinks he becomes very masculine through his adventures I think he actually becomes the man he wants to be and somebody like Ed got him there they complete eachother ed shows stede how to be respected and strong and steed shows him how to be soft and take in the finer things in life my striking coach once told me you can't be fully alpha if your daughter falls and scapes her knee you don't tell her to just walk it off as a man she needs her father to show sympathy and love it's not the time to be tough and mean so they both complete eachother is my point
Precedent doesn't mean much under an absolute monarchy.
The concept of absolutism is totally contradictory to that of feudalism. The Seven Kingdoms are a feudal monarchy, not absolute. And besides, even in the most absolute of absolute monarchies there is a concept called the unavailability of the Crown, and which prohibits the king from transmitting the Crown according to his will. Even Louis the Fourteenth submitted to it.
Wonderful video! I’ve always looked at the dance as a “No one truly won” kind of war. The main tragedy was the dying of the Dragons like you said. The Dragon pit was the Bane of the Targaryens they just didn’t know it
Its interesting that the show features birthing scenes for Rhaenera, her mother, and Lena but not Alicent. Perhaps they didn't want the "Young Alicent" actress to film that uncomfortable subject matter BUT it is an important omission to consider. Rhaenera was able to have children at an older age and within loving, consensual relationships (Harwin & Daemon) where as Alicent was made to bear children for a much older man who did not care for them (or her) as he should have.
This is what I don’t get about king v he said it’s his duty to hold the realm together n that the prophesy needed the realm together under a Targaryen. N yet he put Rhaenyra on their knowing she will have problems because she is a women, not to mention she has 3 bastards, putting bastards on the iron throne has never happened n is treason……..it’s not like people r against bastards n women in his kingdom 😂 King v was an idiot n his actions proved opposite of his duty.
The first series was amusing, the second a typical Taika Waititi follow-up dross fest. He just seems too self-indulgent to the extent that he misses what actually makes an idea good (for another great example, check out Terrence Trent D'Arby's first two albums, just don't spend money on the second!) and everyone is too frightened to point it out to him because, you know, he's a legend! (yawn...). Gay pirates, OK, that was fine in series 1. Series 2 was just self regarding rubbish.
It's not Taika Waititi's show, though. It's David Jenkins' creation. Waititi didn't write any of it, only threw a little improv in scenes he's in (though most examples I can think of are from season 1) and directed one episode in season 1. He doesn't have any writing credit. You can dislike Waititi's work, and you can dislike the writing for Our Flag Means Death (David Jenkins' show), but this is not Waititi's work. Maybe do a lil Google search next time :P
I agree with most of your criticisms.
I am Team Green because naming and keeping Rhaenyra heir destabilizes the realm for as long as her and her descendants reigned. Even if you take away the greens a bloody civil war was inevitable all because of Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra’s children are split into 2 factions Harwin’s bastards and Daemon’s trueborn sons. This would eventually cause war if Rhaenyra’s reign lasted that long. Rhaenyra also has shown multiple times that she is selfish impulsive and politically stupid. She doesn’t have experienced or competent advisors like Aegon ( maybe Rhaenys but thats it). Aegon has a stronger claim, legitimate heirs, beloved wife (unlike Rhaenyra’s spouse) , competent and experienced advisors, and strong allies. Naming Aegon heir would’ve avoided the fall of house Targaryen and saved thousands of lives.
Aegon is a drunk and Alicent is impulsive enough to have tried to kill Rhaenyra in a room full of people. Alicent could have chosen not to prepare her children to take the throne, she was pushing for it for decades for entirely selfish reasons. Rhaenyra has Rhaenys and Corlys, who are easily as competent as Otto. Aegons claim is based on ignoring what the old king officially declared. Not exactly a strong claim imo. Devoted wife? She's not even sane. The real answer to avoid all of this was to marry all the kids and cousins as soon as possible and then nobody can go to war because there aren't any sides left.
@@alexjames7144 1.Alicent was not in her right mind and immediately regretted. 2. Rhaenys and Coryls were dumb enough to believe that obvious bastards would inherit without contests. The allowed the political and familial disaster Rhaenyra to ruin their family legacy and entire house. Coryls continued to back a woman who k1lled his son, passing off bastards as trueborn, and husband k1lled his brother. I say all that to say the velaryons are just as ignorant as Rhaenyra. 3.Alicent tried preparing Aegon but failed in parenting him. 4. Aegon’s claim is on 1000s of years of precedence, tradition and laws. The same precedent made Viserys king in the first place. The entire Targaryen dynasty is based on male primogeniture and westerosi customs. 4. Hel is as sane as everyone else in the show. She is intelligent she is just autistic ( im assuming) 5. The solution after marrying Alicent and having Aegon was to name him heir on his second birthday. There war avoided.
love the vid u really put a fingir on what was wrong with this arc
I TOTALLY agree about seraphim! He honestly should have either been redeemed in the end or made the main character. He was my favorite too
Technically dreams did make them kings, if not for Daeny’s dreams of the doom of Valyria the targs would’ve been BBQ like everyone else in Valyria minus the few other families that escaped so sure physically the dragons positioned them with power but it started with the Dreams and there u go.
I don't think bullies are confident. If you're confident, why would you need to put others down?
and here come Season 2 ^^
Love your analysis of the characters!
Further supporting my case that his actions against Vander were motivated not by malice and he was actually somewhat remorseful for killing his adoptive brother and later giving his corpse to Singed/"The Doctor" to be turned into Warwick, his expression when he looked at Vander when Powder jumped into his arms was one not of hate but of sadness and recognition that this hurt little girl felt as he did back then.
Silco said himself "As time passed, so did my hate." In other words, he forgave Vander for nearly drowning and disfiguring him but what he could not forgive was Vander abandoning Zaun for children of all things and yet ironically, only moments later he did the exact same thing. Also, Silco projecting himself onto Jinx is the same thing Vander did with Vi.
I disagree with the take that Silco wanted to further hurt Vander. Yes, he was angry at Vander for betraying him and as his scenes with the other Chem-Barons showed betrayal brought out uncharacteristic pettiness in him at times, however with the other Chem-Barons his anger wasn`t motivated by them simply trying to overthrow him, rather it was caused in his own words by them becoming greedy, fat, complacent opportunists like the cowardly Topside Councillors who exiled their ancestors from Piltover and reminding them of what it truly means to be a Zaunite: Struggling to survive in unforgiving conditions of pollution, impoverishment and repression. Also, Silco and Vander`s love/ hate relationship was clearly meant to parallel that of Vi with both Powder/Jinx and later Caitlyn.
Really liked this video Rae, you made some good points that i mostly agree with even though i love this arc to death, but I do have to disagree with your points on Farnese. She doest change immediately when she joins Guts. We see when she and serpico reunite with Isidro that she is still very arrogant and aristocratic minded to anyone that isnt Guts, and that only changes when she has it proved to her how being nobility means nothing in the real world. She gets beaten down and humiliated constantly until she changes her outlook on herself and her position in the world. It is a bit strange how her kinks suddenly vanish but tbh i don't think they did, she just doesnt go out of her way to indulge herself with them because of aforementioned change. (Though i think that should've been highlighted) Her being in charge of Casca isnt a leap in logic either when you consider her guilt at what shes done. Shes been the holy sees executioner for hundreds of largely innocent people. Casca being one such example, her trying to atone by helping someone she tried to hurt before is a pretty human reaction from her. That and shes not much good at anything else. And as for not being able to defend herself, this isnt as stupid as it seems. Yes it can be a bit annoyng that every female character since Cascas mind shattered has had to hide behind the nearest male character when thngs get violent but for Farnese specifically it makes sense. She was never trained in combat and has only ever been shown as an ornament. The comparison with Isidro being able to defend himself isnt as crazy as it sounds either since unlike her, Isidros been out in the world with no one to keep him safe or secure, caught in the middle of a war, plague, roving bandits and everything else. The first chapters hes introduced in people are trying to rob and murder him for food and hes so accustomed to this he literally poisoned a portion of it KNOWING someone would try and take it. Hes very used to violence and how to avoid/get the better of it and has been getting proper training from Guts, so him being somewhat capable compared to her despite only being ~14 isnt unreasonable (Hell shes only like 5 years older than him anyway) I also dont think her agency is being taken from her at all, shes making her own choices following the path she wants to and a lot of the party's directions are because of her input, for better and worse. Thats all. Again i reslly enjoyed and agreed with almost everything else here but i just wanted to state my opinions here
This isn’t even our world. Not looking for historical accuracy and nor should you. It literally pointless. 😅
I didn't like it because I can suspend my disbelief just so much, and her biggest fan wanting to kill her was just too cliché
Love your take! If you want to hear mine. I just put out a video on my favorite episodes of TLOU. Keep up the good work!
Interesting analysis. You should add Ellie and Maria to this analysis because they also perform the same protector behaviors but from a female perspective.
My focus for this video was just the male characters since they have a greater impact on this season. I do speak of Ellie for all she has to do for Joel at the end of the season.
I read the shadow and bone trilogy a few months before it came out as a tv show. I hated it but loved the Six of Crows. The Six of Crows characters are forced unnaturally into the tv series though. I agree with Alina's journey, its not super original.
Yea, I've heard the Crows duology is better. It's on my TBR list. It would've been better if they dedicated one series of books per show. Agree the Crows feel crammed into the show, though they're great characters.
i believe Joel and Bill see the world as cruel as it is long before the outbreak... and to over come that Joel and Bill need to become someone they despise, but they quickly adapted inorder to survive after the outbreak. In the end they have to become the hero, not the hero we deserved but the hero we needed... like Batman XD
Wonderfully done. Love when we see more admirable male role models.
It's a gift Pedro Pascal has been giving us 😂

Crazy how people didn't have a problem watching men pulverize each other but are disturbed by watching women give life 🤦🏽♀️. Ps. Those remedies sound a bit painful. I wonder if they actually helped? Vinegar down there after birth 👀😩
My guess is it only added more pain. I'm so glad to have been born in this age ahah
Tragically there is no actual evidence for matelotage being queer. It totally could have been but a lot of the time it was platonic or familial. Piracy WAS well known for being queer at the time even but matelotage wasn't known to be a part of that.
Oh really? I didn't find any sources saying otherwise, so I thought to include it anyway since what I found was supporting it being queer at times. Thanks for letting me know.
@@raerants It was in a video essay which I now can't find anywhere but I remember it basically was a way to formalize inheritance and stuff in case one person died, and that was the primary motivation for a lot of people to enter into one of these.
Yea, I know that, yet in the sources I've seen it could also mean they were a couple - not necessarily just that tho.
@@raerants I guess it's just that it mirrors marriage pretty much exactly minus the need for sex to legitimize it and so people see it and go "oh, queer marriage!" but there's nothing historically pointing to the queerness of that. Though more than likely committed couples on ships which practised matelotage would have had one and so I really do think it would have been queer, we just don't have any examples proving it ever was.
My absolute all time favourite books!!! I love Bardugo's writing and how the more you think about how the fantasy elements of the world symbolise internal themes of the characters (aka the processing of an abusive relationship through the connection with the Darkling in the second book) the better the books get. Also as a hopeless romantic I am an absolute sucker on how Bardugo's wrote about love. In fact the end of chapter 10 in Ruin and Rising is the best piece of writing (in my opinion). I can go on for hours about all the other elements I love. These books were definitely written for me. Loved your video)))) P.S. Nikolai's character on its own makes the series a 5 star
Thank you. This video is not getting much traction but I needed to talk about the thing I admire most in this trilogy. Also, Nikolai is hands down my favourite character ahah
I love how the show made Vhaegar a near spitting image of a Komodo dragon. Right down to the baggy neck (giving a good, firm grip for Caraxes to later lock onto). HBO is laying it all out, and I can't wait to see it.
They're also making the dragons more distinct from each other than in GOT, even in personalities. I can't wait to see more of them in the next seasons.
@@raerants indeed 💯
Alina is the epidome of the false prophet trope. She is this dumb american teenager who is enraged that her privliged and comfortable life is desturbed with serious problems like fascist who are attacking Ravka and genociding grisha....and then there is this evil shadow summoning dude who want her to help....how dare he....
I would argue that Rhaenrya needed to cement her position. As unfair as it is, she is a female heir in a deeply sexist society with three younger half-brothers which means she does have to work harder for her crown which means that instead of playing it like a prince, she needs to play it like a princess. Basically, turn herself into Alysanne reborn among the nobles and commonfolk, hand out bread and wine to the peasantry, hold balls and festivals, meet with lords and ladies, and learn to flatter. Also, I don't blame Rhaenrya for finding a sperm donor, since her husband was gay and possibly infertile, and she needs an heir to the throne but my problem is her choice. Harwin was not a good choice. She needed a man that resembled Laenor to an extent but also knew when to keep his mouth shut and disappear when he wasn't needed anymore. For this, I suggest a very low-ranking member of House Velaryon who isn't too ambitious but would be happy to be used to make the next heirs to the throne.
That's fair tbh, and also agree with all that. Westeros is man's world, and she needed to have played her cards smarter, although I sympathise with her and her struggle.
In the books it's more ambiguous when it comes to Rhaenyra's first three children because her kids are white and house velaryon is white so people assumed that her children took after their black haired dragon riding grandmother the Princess Rhaenys the Queen who never was . In The show the velaryons are black and Rhaenyra's kids are white so its obvious they are bastards. I suspect this was done in order for Greens to appear more Grey and more justified in taking the throne not just power hungry usurpers who took the throne without reason
@@raerants I do too. It's not right that no one would care what she would do if she was prince, but Rhaenys and Viserys are also correct that she is a girl and needs to be able to play the Game of Thrones by their rules until she can make up her own.
No!!! Targaryens have dragon blood. Still-births are not from inbreeding. How do you get scales from inbreeding???
Yasss!!! Still-births are from inbreeding, and, because of the Targaryen dragon blood, some are born like Visenya in HotD. Perhaps I should've mentioned that as well.
they would have looked like habsburgs then, I thought anyone kinda agreed in the fandom that this law doesn't work in this universe (or for targaryens)@@raerants
Great vid may the algo gods bless you!
Thanks! They haven't blessed me this year yet ahah Gotta keep grinding
Good video!
Thank you ! I enjoyed making it :)
Look to be true every houses legacy is war in westeres not only targs but non of those house legacy is uniting Westeros but Targaryns. Targs is the best thing that could happen to western especially it's small folk.
Both Rhaenyra and Alicent are flawed parents. Alicent is a lot more intense when perhaps she needs to show her softer side a bit more and is far too critical of her children, especially Aegon(who was desperate for her approval) while Rhaenyra coddles and too overprotective, allowing Aemond and Daeron to get ahead of them
Greens 💚
