Why 'fake' Maasai don't exist. I interview Maasai on #zanzibar .
Recently I was asked how my husband (who is Maasai) feels about all the so called fake Maasai on the beaches of Zanzibar.
I said that there is no such thing as a 'fake' Maasai. Maybe there are fake Swahili people pretending to be Maasai in order to attract tourists, but this is not the fault of the Maasai.
I continued by saying that many of the Maasai in Paje are actually from our village and quite a few come from our family.
I watched them grow up for the last 12 years.
So for me they are family and they are for sure real Maasai.
I think some tourists are confused as to why some Maasai come to Zanzibar. It is to earn money to feed their families.
Most Maasai on Zanzibar are Parakuiyo Maasai from Central and South Tanzania. They often live off the beaten track, far from National Parks so they have no means of earning a living.
That's why they come where the tourists are, Zanzibar, in order to sell their jewellery.
Maasai from the North of the country have a lot of access to the tourism industry as they live close to world famous National parks like the Serengeti and so don't have the need to come to Zanzibar.
A lot of lies are spread about the Maasai who come to Zanzibar, often by their fellow Tanzanians because they don't want them to work on Zanzibar.
I always urge tourists to be careful and not base their judgement of the Maasai on what one other person has told them. Particularly if this person is not a Maasai himself.
There are good people and bad people in every country and in every ethnicity of the world. I come from Germany and I would never say that an entire nationality is bad, because maybe one person from a particular country has done something bad.
The Maasai are people like you and me. They are indigenous people whose culture is changing and they therefore need money to provide for their families back home. To buy maize, clothes, medicines, school fees, etc.
I hope this video gives you a little insight into the fascinating world of the Maasai.

It's true. The rumors about the fake Massai are spread by locals from Zanzibar who are afraid of competition. I have met some very nice people from the Manyara Lake area.

I love how they just enjoy life. We take so much for granted and yet most of us are misserable they have such passion and happiness for life. We should all use them as an inspiration and enjoy life. We have life and that is the key to real happiness

Why? Let Massai people live according their traditions. The modern lifestyle have many bad inpact on humans, for example cutting family Bonds. We should instead fight together with Massai people. Their lands are taken and Massai people get dissplaced. A human needs nature and peace. Our planet needs balance but the modern way of living is destroying it. We have a lot to learn from Massai people instead. Let them live in peace.
