The way i made sense of it all was that after their initial relationship did not work out or maybe even start she kept an eye on him and build as it's called in Psychology a Persona around him. I myself do not see a constant physical on and off relationship between Matty and Her. While he is not her level famous I think someone would have noticed that. And, let me be the man here, if you call me the smallest man who ever lived in "Any measure of a man" after our relation breaks up then you get this scenario and think what that would do to Taylors image if he said this to TMZ: "Suddenly when I break up it's small but all those years when that boring dude could not satisfy her she came running to get rogered by me before returning to her boring live for a few more months there were no complaints? That is just strange don't you think?". Her carefully build image imo would be irreparably shattered. That is why I have my doubts if the relationship was on and off physical. What does happen is that she keeps an eye on him, swirled him into all of her poems etc, if they actively communicate about that i got no clue, though your excellent research into the song lyrics make that very plausible. When she was in studio for Midnights he is in the same studio at the same time working with Jack because the 1975 had writers block. I think that over the years she reads/hears about his exploits and builds a a persona around him during "guilty as Sin" moments when her relation with Joe was either dull, boring or on a break. Matty wrote on Midnights with her (song or version did not make the cut) so he was there around the You're loosing me time and probably heard what she was missing in her relationship and what he needed to say and promise to get the girl. Things like "After 6 years still not married and now you got to open your album with a song to protect yourself against logical questions because he does not marry you and you do not want to answer those questions anymore because you do want that 1950's stuff? wth if I were him I would have ...." etc Then when they finally got together she expected Matty to become the persona that she had of him in his mind, the answer to all her questions, wants, lusts and insecurities on top of those of millions of rabid Swifties. So Matty buckled and left. Btw perfect for Travis or any future boyfriend, didn't she say that there was always that one person that could interrupt the wedding? I think for her that was the persona she build around Matty so they can all sleep a lot better knowing that the "what if" guy is out of the picture. This is my shoebox theory and I am very relieved to see that your excellent explanation does not tear it down and spits it out :) It seems to fit nicely in your far more extensive explanation so I am looking forward to Part 3!

Thank you for calling out Joe! I'm not a big fan of the current PR circus with Travis but Joe's dismissiveness towards speaking about Taylor (his global pop star GF) was always so odd to me. If he wanted a more private life, maybe don't date Taylor? I don't know. It always rubbed me the wrong way.

I think the song Halsey covered was actually about Taylor. The calling when you want to play with yourself line reminds me of Guilty as Sin.

I can definitely see why Taylor fell so hard for Matty. I mean, obviously he's very attractive, sexy and they're shared passion for music, writing and performing! I believe he and Taylor are both geniuses in their own right. Matty doesn't want to grow up , I think he's scared to. I really wish he would've been a man and talked to Taylor instead of ghosting her 👻 I one hundred percent believe she would've burnt her life down for Matty, and it's so heartbreaking 😢 I do believe he loves Taylor as much as he's capable of loving, but never enough to sustain a life long commitment. I listened to all of part one. Your research is on par but may I offer a little advice? Your voice is too monotonous. Some texture and color (if you know what I mean) would make it interesting. It’s flat and just sounds like you are reading something that you don’t really care about. I did subscribed but I’m going to skip part two and I’ll watch for future videos. Thank you. You have some great points and I enjoyed your video. But I do disagree with Taylor and Matty being together in the middle of the 6 years she was with Joe. There is zero evidence of that at least to me. They definitely had something in 2014 before she dated Calvin and something started happening when they reconnected when Taylor was recording midnights and obviously in May 2023. Songs like cruel summer don’t fit Matty. I do believe that folklore and evermore were mostly fictional, but with some real feelings. It’s hard to take every line in every song and link them to Matty tbh.

i've never fully believed the love triangle story. this is such a silly point but I’ve never seen anyone mention the inconsistencies in the story of the folklore love triangle. in Betty, the boy mentioned that Betty switched out of his homeroom & that he’s 17, which would mean he’s in high school. in August, it really sounds like he’s in college as she says “when you’re back at school” and the month of August is typically when college resumes. in Cardigan, she mentions the high line, which is in NYC ("downtown bars"), but Taylor has said she imagines this love triangle in a small coastal town. there are so many inconsistencies that i think it demonstrates how much she pulled from her own experiences for the album. separately, i think a lot of reputation could have been initially written about matty especially because of Taylor's infamous "paternity test" comment. matty & her were never a confirmed item at this time, so i think that could have been a subtle way of saying not all songs are about joe.

personally, i think with folklore she actually was writing a fictional love triangle but still sprinkled in aspects of her love life in it

I was anticipating this video a lot and it lived up to the hype in my head. I can't wait for part 3.

Poor Joe.

The way I see it, everything with Matty hit so hard cause it was also the aftermath of everything that (did not) happend with Joe. She basically tells us she tried to replace J with M and shift all her dreams and feelings onto him. She was lonely and vulnerable after the break up and therefore a perfect "victim" for M who promised her everything she always wanted from/with J. She fought so long and hard for J and their relationship but lost hope - so she cleary was on a high and ready to leave when someone came by and promised to fulfill all her dreams. When this was an even bigger desaster, she suddenly had to deal with two heartbreaks at once and the fact that none of them wanted to make her wishes come true and love her the way she wanted to. There could be several reasons why there are just few songs about Joe. Maybe she wanted to respect his privacy, maybe she was okay with telling the world about how a fling wronged her but not about her long term relationship ending, maybe she didn't have anything more to say than she already did with You're losing me, so long london etc. (who knows maybe we hear more in the future🤷🏼‍♀️). I also believe at that point she had accepted her and Joe not working out. I don't think she was indifferent about him but just tired. Seems like she fought hard and stayed so long despite hurting cause she really loved him and wanted him to be the one. You don't let someone who you think is the love of your life go easily and move on the next week. She hold onto him for over a year but gave up in the end - not because she wanted but because she felt like she had to. Also like she said, she writes the worst man best - she directly wants to tell us that the reason there are so many songs about M is because his actions gave her great material. Also this was her way of letting it all out once (esp. as the public was so involved with this) so she can let it go and never come back. That the 2 obviously purely Joe songs between the Matty stuff are both Track 5 is quite telling tho - a message that this was real and the underlying sadness of it all.

I'm really glad I ignored anything said about Joe and never watched his movie. Kinda stupid to not mention a song, when she went and supported his dumb movie. Love her and Travis for supporting each other, cause that's what a couple does.

"I can show you the photographs of you getting on with life" means it's about an ex. And the live play history is what sealed it for me. It's only ever been played live 4 times: 3/29, 3/30, 4/4, and 7/21 of 2023. All immediately before and after what I believe are the true start and end of their 2023 relationship. 3/29 is the day Meredith Mickelson said Matty stopped replying to her. It's also the day that likely Taylor and Joe's final breakup was official. She swapped out Invisible String for The 1 that weekend. And if it is about her, it marks the first of multiple times he refers to them being married in a dream/imagination. There's a whole theory about track 10s always being some kind of message back and forth. Go lookup Tortured Typewriter on twitter. They've got a whole thread on it.

Some of the songs on Notes on a Conditional Form were released before the album, most notably Me & You Together Song. The song was released in January 2020, and the music video was released about a week before the NME awards. I think it's why she showed up at that awards show instead of going to the Grammy's that year, Matty's love song.
