I started at 49 I enjoyed it completed at 53 well worth it
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Please how do l get admissions at Cambridge 😢
Never too late. Im 40 and currently doing my thesis for Masters. Regardless the age, it can be done. Aim high!
All these smart people have PhDs from reputed institutions. I don't have one. 😞
It's so inspiring. Huge thank you!!!
What makes it different from Endnote, Mendely or Zotero?
This is a great resource for me because I read a lot of academic articles online, and I need to keep track of them. I will definitely subscribe to this service, it looks much easier to manage than some others, like the Zotero that I learned about last year.
I want to do my PhD in adult learning. Can you guide and help me in fulfilling my dream.
I am from India. I completed my PhD at the age of 47. After my completion, I found that PhD is of no use. In india you have to be below 35 years if you want to apply for any government Job. So I was forced to apply for private universities with low salary. In foreign universities also, they will prefer youngsters for postdoc or tenure track assistant professor position rather than a senior person. So in my opinion doing PhD at old age is of no use.
Completely agree. She is 100% right.
I started my PsyD at 41. I come with over 15 years of experience and it has been invaluable. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I started my PhD three years ago at 41 years old. I will finish in a year and a half, and although the amount of work can be overwhelming sometimes, I have really enjoyed the wealth of knowledge I have gained and the improvement of my overall academic skills. It has definitely been worth it to me thus far.
Thank you. This was the video what I need it 🤗
Thanks for sharing. I think that this research tool is best for people who are in the so-called hard science fields. I have to read the entire article for my work. The Social Sciences are focused on language and culture, so for me, the process helps me to learn the vocabulary, nomenclature, or jargon of the field at a specific moment in time. Thanks for the discount code. I'll probably use it to look into some things.
Thank you for your transparency! God bless you.
Never to late to do something until it is
Final year of my Ph.D at 34 and feel more confident and experienced to do Ph.D compared to younger me
Thank you. Helpful for sure.
You assume the phd candidate already has a family and fail to address the conflicts that might arise in connection with initiating relationships outside academia in the first place.
If academia is getting in the way of your personal relationships, then something is wrong, either with you and academia or with you and your relationship. It is usually the latter.
I worked as a technician for years on electronics and aircraft. I finished my PhD in interdisciplinary applied mathematical and mathematical physics at age 63. I encountered many faculty who had PhDs in electronics and they had never hand-built anything they designed. It seemed sad to see my dissertation advisor had never picked up a soldering gun. Accordingly, I have a constructive criticism of PhD programs. They should add in and include technical training. The academic world is not for me and I work as a janitor, but so what. I would still do my PhD anyway.
That is why they came up with professional doctorate. You should have pursued a professional doctorate in your field maybe.
I do not know of any universities near where I live where this is available. After nine years of teaching at two universities, I found things so corrupt and eventually ended up working for a dishonest chair who stole my wages and quit academia to get more take-home pay and shorter hours working as a janitor. Still, if I had it to do over again, I would still do mu PhD because it changes who you are when you have proof of any credibility you claim in choosing how you live. To get along with most people, you never again have to come down to the level of such culture you find offensive as American Idol, the Price is Right, and lottery tickets.
@@drbarney1000 I wish you well. Gracious!
I was a policeman approaching retirement at age 50. Not sure what I wanted to do, but I did know I didn't fancy just playing golf or fishing. So I started a PhD in analytical linguistics. It took me four and a half years, extending beyond my retirement date. It was the right time of life for me and I enjoyed the process. I was able to work in academia, teaching semantics to undergrads and postgrads, earning a salary while claiming a police pension, so I had a good income. I am now fully retired and I miss the academic environment and my youthful students.
I agree with it entirely. A hundred percent true ❤️👍😊
go for it but dont go into debt debt is not worth it
As a PhD student they often pay you for you work as a TA.
Wow.... U such an inspiration!
congrats!!
What is the age limit for PhD Funded programes in Europe?
There is no age limit. You might have a hard time finding a professor who will take you, though, because they have to get funding for you.
53, and in my second year. If it feels like the right time, it's the right time.
I was just accepted into my PhD program of choice and I am so happy and excited but at the same time terrified. I needed to hear this!
If you don't want a tenure position, why do you do PhD in the first place? Most school only requires masters to teach or no masters but industry experience. If you just want the shiny title that start with Dr., PhD is a pure waste of time. It's not about age, but about why your pursue it.
Because tenure just means that you are a teacher who can't be fired unless you do something really outrageous (usually along the lines of sexual assault). Beyond that it means absolutely nothing. You aren't doing the PhD for the title, even though it confers hiring benefits. You are doing it because you want to prove to yourself that you have what it takes. You don't sound like somebody who does.
I got my MBA degree in the late 90s and have industry experience in corporate and academia - teaching. Currently, I am based in the U.S., and intend to pursue a doctorate in Social Sciences, and have been researching universities in Scandinavian countries, particularly in the field of Behavioral Psychology. What is the most effective avenue to get relevant process information and guidance? Thank you!
What do you mean by "process information and guidance"? A PhD is a work contract between you and a university with your professor being your hiring manager. YOU ARE WORKING FOR HIM OR HER. That means you have to be as careful as with any other job selection. If it turns out that you don't like the job or the boss, then you are in dire straights. I ran into a problem of that sort during my PhD and it gave me a hard time for about a year and a half. After that I got my act together and I powered through. In hindsight I was simply immature and silly at that point. I could have handled it a lot better. But that is the point: they throw you in the water and you either sink or swim. I swam. The end.
If you're rusty then start small with a soft course and keep going until you get the hang of the system, yourself and just keep going and you will achieve what was assumed, insurmountable. It's just like going to the gym. Always be looking out for better and efficient ways to do things.
You're doing great. Will be applying for my PHD in no distant time. Almost done with my essays and all.
I wish you all the succes! God bless you!
Truthful & optimistic... needed to hear this today
Don't do it, you'll regret. Not because someone is old, but for younger ones also, don't do it.
You sound like a defeatist. ;-)
my question is: do admission committee shy away from older applicants?
My admissions committee was my professor. Nobody else. He had older students than me (close to 40), so I don't think he was discriminating by age much. If they have a cutoff they will tell you before you even show up. I don't think they can discriminate in the US to begin with. That's probably against federal law.
It's never too late, my darlings. I had a friend in the UK and she was 54. I helped her with all the essays and papers 🤫. Btw it's what I do. I make PhD students' life easier.
In STEM? Hardly. The leading expert on the problem of a PhD student is usually the PhD student. :-)
As long as the point is not to be an academic older is fine. Academia requires naive young students willing to work themselves into the grave for nothing. Phd in industry opens interesting doors. Financially it’s questionable at any age.
Jenny Craig. 👀
Great advice. Thanks for sharing! 🏴☠
I'm hopefully about to begin a PhD journey myself, having had one failed attempt in my early 20s. Now I'm in my late 30s I was feeling like it might be too late, but your story has encouraged and inspired me. Thanks for sharing, and congratulations on your determination and success!
It’s never too late. Go for it I saw another clip on this channel of Dr Bronwyn Herbert then went on to read about her. Both these ladies are inspirational. Go after your dreams it’s never too late.
Waste time. Don't do it.
Thx :)
I'm 64 and in my fourth year of my PhD. Never too old!
I am 62 and thinking about it. I just have a masters and would need to identify a program and get in. Not sure that it makes sense though of course at this point it is about the love of learning more than a new career path. I finally have the time and resources to devote myself to something like this. I am in the humanities so it could be a long slog. Not sure when or if I would finish.
I am inspired. Thanks for sharing your experience and good luck. BTW I am 62 and would love to pursue my PhD.
@@MkunderaI’ve been internationally published twice, am working on my 3rd Masters . . . but to actually take those publications and what I’ve learned as a community college professor, if I’m actually going to make the change that I see needed from what I’ve already done plus what I still want to do and have crusty old academics take me seriously? I need a PhD. I’m 63 and I plan to start on my PhD in fall 2025. (I graduate my current Masters program in May 2025.) If you want to change the world, it’s not too late.
In more or less the same situation as you were 4 years ago. But I have no professional need of one, so it would be for the challenge in a different domain, and frankly I'm worried I might be no longer with us before I finish. Plus there are too many temptations elsewhere. So, unless I have a massive brain-fart, I'll probably give it a miss.
@@GeorgesDupont-do8pe I don't need it for work either but its certainly taught me a lot and I'm not planning to leave the planet anytime soon. Too much living to do!
God Bless You!!
Being an RN, the profession is very clinician-focused, so higher education always seemed esoteric and rare. I wanted to be a kick-ass trauma and then flight nurse so that was my passion. There is typically little increase in one's pay, yet tons of debt with getting an advanced degree. So after getting my experience in trauma and as a flight nurse, I found myself burnt out as a bedside. I loved teaching students (new graduates in my unit and new hires), so when I learned I could teach at an Associate degree school with just my Bachelor's, I took the leap. Five years later, I had my MSN, and 10 years later, I got my PhD (at age 57). Despite being the oldest student in my cohort, I actually did very well. I was the only one working FT to finish on time (4 years) and received many accolades for my work. I got promoted at my nursing school and am now an Associate Professor of Nursing. I love my life. Will I go on to publish much? That's been on the back burner, but I still do not regret going for it.
Loved this Mam! I need some assistance. How can I reach out to you?
The PhD place and your story it is just incredible. Very positive and encouraging😃👍 Too good to be true ❤❤ Thank for for sharing with us your journey in this video. All the best to you with your life journey 👍👍😃😃
