My Ubiquiti SolarPoint FAILED!
During a botched upgrade of a UniFi G3 Bullet to a G5 Bullet, that should have only taken five minutes, Alex learns that passive PoE has its downsides. In this video, Alex goes to upgrade the camera, realises the PoE adaptor had fried the Ubiquiti SolarPoint and then fixes everything.

Thanks for uploading this, I just used it to setup an access point this morning. I really enjoyed the fact that it was straight forward
Free UISP application use will be limited to self-hosting starting January 1, 2025. That sucks because I did have a Linux server, and was hosting myself and all of my bridges, but it seems that switched over to Ubiquiti hosting it was a bad idea since their hosting offer lasted like a year. Now I either have to build another server, or from what I see here, I can just install this Console instead? I don't need a gateway though, I just need the controller software so I can manage all the Nanostations etc.
We provide UISP hosting for up to 25 devices for $9/month or $99/year at HostiFi. You ca also hire us to set up your server for you if you prefer. I wouldn't recommend the UISP Console but it is an option too!
Alex - can the UXG-PRO use 3 ports as WAN's? So WAN1, WAN2 and WAN3. We technically have 3 ISP's. 1 fiber and 2 WSIP's. That way we would have 2 failover ports
Great Video, keepup
How did you reset the UISP console to add as unms?
I am trying to find the page where you can set the physical location of your DM. I have moved and my wifi devices still thinks they are at my old location in my old home. Any ideas? UniFi OS 4.1.9. Network 8.6.9
Whats the measurements of your electrical cabinet?
I have a mixed ubiquiti network with mostly UniFi stuff. I have several usip bridges. Can I use the console on the UniFi network and remotely access the console
Nice, honest video, thank you! I wondered if the 10M fdx was due to a dodgy cable (missing a pair kills the negotiation) but it looks like you kept the original cable? On the need to upgrade the solarpoint, I've just found a product from Linovision POE-SW805G5U-Solar that is a "solar poe 5-port GigE switch" with passive *and* proper af/at (switchable), with built in charge controller (pwm, but hey), and it supports lithium batteries! All in one box! Just not an elegant part of the ubiquiti ecosystem and not a manageable/monitorable device (correction, they have a more expensive model that does have that). Still, going to try one out on our property asap :-)
May I ask if this is same procedure to perform, I have here Unifi 16 port switch even after Reset the switch still I cant Adopt or failed.
32:52 Two 12V batteries in series make 24V But as it shows in the picture it will give 35Ah. Why did you put in 70Ah when it clearly said 35Ah. Brush up on basic elektronics, it will help a lot. NIce setup.
Hey, that's not exactly right. The diagram is purely an example to help you work it out. The Ah is set from the batteries you have, in my installation I had two 70Ah 12V batteries and while the voltage doubles, the Ah stays the same from just the one battery. When using two 24V batteries, then the Ah doubles up. Thanks for watching.
@ ahhh yeah that makes sense. Didnt make that out in the video
That step-up converter is not rated for 21-Amps, it's rated for 0.21-Amps (1:39), which is only 10 watts available. Essentially less than is available with 802.3af (15.4 watts), much less 802.3at (IE POE+), or 802.3bt (IE POE++).
Yep, the unit is rated for 0.21A, however the spacing made it look like 21A at a glance. For this purpose, 10W is way more than what I needed, as the G5 Bullet uses 4W. Thanks for watching though 👍
Sadly the SolarPoint is an abandoned device (even if the firmware is recently updated). My initial worry is you are using a passive 48v output device that may not support the desired input of the G5 or other normal AF/AT devices properly. While you can get buck converters, to support the G5, the rest of the meshing and bridging kit are all Passive 24V. Unless you are replacing the entire set of devices with a newer mesh-AC (AF/24v) with a SwissArmy Knife (AF) or Some other AF/AT devices - I would have honestly kept the G3 @ 24v. The solar point does have a DC 24V output, this can power other devices at up to 7A, but again your draw/overhead to support it is questionable just for a single AF device. Witek SKU 901-401 is a 12-57v DC Input, to 48v AF-AT Output. This would allow you to run off of the DC out into this injector and then power the G5 on native AF/AT. The tycon options are also quite acceptable. I have no idea how obtainable this product would be in your area. Texas POE does have some good midspan injector options as well. Most all of the UISP gear is still 24-27v Passive. Once you get into Unifi Proper (Home kit) then you get back into normal AF/AT/BT power standards. You could get a Tycon switch to support AF/AT + 24V but that is serious money, compared to the solar point itself.
Another product they made and forgot about. It’s a device that really need an upgrade. It should have a built-in step up converter and B 48 V and support lithium iron batteries only supporting lead acids a real downside.
Agreed, hopefully Ubiquiti makes an updated SolarPoint unit for more modern hardware. Thanks for watching the video.
Ubiquiti don't build stuff to last.
Link to cabinet? Video is awesome 😊
Thanks! The cabinet I got is only available in the UK, link is here www.it-stockist.co.uk/product/owr-420-550-320-rack-19-6u-waterproof-cabinet/
Victron Orion Converter 24v to 48v is proper kit
21A ha ha ha ha 0000.21Amps.. 48v x 0.21A = 10W max power G5 uses 4W so it may work but remember cheap electrical normally fails by catching fire.. this is cheap electrical. Increasing voltage is way harder than reducing voltage hence why it hard to find decent kit.
How / where did you get a new solarpoint? I’ve been looking for ages for one (at a decent price), thx for the video
No problem! I picked it up from the Europe Ubiquiti Store, as it was even out of stock in the UK. eu.store.ui.com/eu/en/category/accessory-tech-power-solutions/products/sunmax-sp-40?variant=sm-sp-40 US Store has stock too store.ui.com/us/en/category/accessory-tech-power-solutions/products/sunmax-sp-40?variant=sm-sp-40
Nice video. I think you are using the converter incorrectly. The Poe goes one the 24 v side and the barrels jack is 48V
Sorry. I stand corrected. Disregard my previous comment.
Thanks for watching!
Nice 👌🏼 video shots
Thank you 🙌
I have running my controller under a raspberry and works fine with 2 AP; once I adopt the router the network goes down and lost connectivity. How can add the router and configure under my actual controller and control the 3 devices with the controller as well?
Another swing and miss by Ubiquiti. It's like they take old spare parts and throw stuff together at random.
How do you replace a switch with a new one? Is there a way to copy all the settings over from the old switch to the new one?
Once a new UXG is added to the same lan network on which an existing gateway resides, when the device shows up for adoption and is selected there is an option to “Replace Existing Gateway”. Has anyone used this feature? I’m asking UniFi support about it, but I presume it forgets the old gateway and adopts the new one automatically. I’m specifically looking at the UXG-Enterprise with a CK-Enterprise controller. There’s also a HA mode with two UXG-Enterprises that I’ll be setting up once I have the first unit adopted. Update: That turned out to be a warning, clicking on “Replace existing gateway” returned an error message that wasn’t helpful. Support confirmed that it only is there to indicate the old gateway has to be forgotten and the new one adopted. Putting the new gateway on the same lan subnet allows it to be seen as ready to adopt so it’s easy to forget the old one, turn it off, then adopt the new one. However, support says to forget, turn off, then power up the new one and adopt. The wan ports still require manipulation to get the primary and secondary defined with the correct external ip addresses. I wish there was a feature to swap primary and secondary easily.
Hey! I’ll test this feature and let you know 👍
@@hostifi I edited my comment with more info after I got the UXG working.

I have virgin media as my router. I’m having a bunch of ip issues. Is there a way to take my switch and WAPs and use them as a router not just a bridge from my virgin media router?
Super helpful! My new device showed up as a client. Used Putty to SSH into the device, and used set-inform with my controller IP. This caused the device to show up under devices and asked to be adopted. PERFECT!

I have an M2 set up from my house (where router is) and 30Mtrs away in a stable to two surveillance cameras. Can I unplug the camera recorder in the stables, and plug that end of the M2 into a PC to gain internet access ? or would I have to change settings ?
You’ve probably already figured this out, but if the NVR had already worked fine on the Ethernet, it’s probably DHCP and should be fine just plugging into a pc. Likewise you can plug it into a WiFi router and name it something like “stables WiFi” and connect all your devices into that (including your Ethernet devices, cameras, etc.)
Great video! That is super neat that y'all used the UISP 2.4 GHz omni antenna with a UAC Mesh. Did y'all disable 5 GHz on the radio, or did the antenna handle 5 GHz good enough?
Hey Jim! Thanks for watching, to disable 5GHz on the radios, we had to make 2.4GHz only SSIDs. However, the antenna was broadcasting 5GHz before we disabled and it seemed to work ok. However, it isn't rated to support it. 👍
@@hostifi thanks for insight!
5:44 To block the Internet Access for a network just uncheck 'Allow Internet Access' in the specific Network
can this adopt and manage remote radios?
I think you guys will be gaining some new costumers. I will definitely be considering becoming one as well.
I’ll be migrating
Big shock. Next step...remove the ability to run a local self hosted controller.
@@VenomKen I mean to be honest it costs someone money, I doubt they will get rid of the hosted controller but I guess the barometer will be when they get rid of the unifi controller. I don't see that happening either. Of all the controllers I have my hosted controller is my favorite since if the branch Internet goes down I actually get a notification.
I used the free rental space for a few weeks for my rental gear until I realized I didn't work well with rental equipment since at least 10 items needed to always be online, since then I have an instance running in AWS that works a charm. I raise and lower it from t3.small and t3.large depending on my needs. $9 a month is a great price though!
Where can I setup the UISP Console "gateway" like the edgerouter in the system tab?

Hi, I completely forgot how to configure the device for the Omada, so thanks for the tutorial. FYI - it worked for me only after I logged out of the router, before that it failed every time. - the Omada device address is not necessarily at the top of the page, in the case of a software controller you need to provide the IP address of the controller.
