The one we had around broke things deliberately so we get fedup argue amongst ourselves n pay him to extend our home but we didn't go ahead with it.

You are so stupid, It could have happened to anyone. But immediately you think it's because you're a woman, and we should feel so sorry for women. It's no wonder men don't want to have anything to do with women anymore, because you are so independent, and if something goes wrong it's the men's fault, even if there hasn't been a man within a 20 kilometer radius. So far I never had a problem here close to Leiria. I often dont lock the doors but have a great neighbourhood that watches out. Since I do most work myself they respect me even if I do things differently. Dishonest builders are often afraid to be reported to the Finanças for VAT fraud…

The only hassle I got in Portugal was the police and border guards , both parties aggressive and ignorant. I,m still trying to figure out why.

Unless you have a great builder you should seriously think about buying turn key, In the USA we have the contractors license board, construction bond and structured payments. It's the wild west here in Portugal.

We've lived here a long time, and sadly this is absolutely par for the course here. Very very common. You've got zero chance of getting anywhere legally against a local. The lawyers will drag it out for years, rob you blind, and then the case will be dropped. It's not the same everywhere despite what other people are saying. It's common here, they get your trust, and then rob you or rip you off. That's Portugal in a nutshell. Be careful he doesn't poison your dogs either. that's very very common if you have a neighbour you've fallen out with.

I'm a man so I hadn't be sexually harassed by builders (yet!), but everything else you can imagine happened to me. There's certainly a few good ones (never met them) but most of are the low of the lowest regarding professionalism, education and just being decent. And forget about the most simple deadline. As a rule, you need to keep the money on your side at all times - only pay them when the job is finish to your linking. Never accept a builder asking for money upfront for general materials (it's different if that's custom made stuff like windowns or whatever). And you learned the hard way a saying we have here: "Santos ao pé da porta não fazem milagres" - that's roughly "Saints next door don't perform miracles"". Good luck for everything. 🖖🏻

The police in Portugal doesn’t do nothing, it favours the thieves.

Get yourself a camera and put up a CCTV sign. At least if it happens again you will have have footage.

Cameras,my wife and I had trouble with anti social behavior so decided on cameras if you have Wi-Fi the camera system we used is eufy they are wireless and only need charging about 3 times a year so if someone comes to your house you get a notification I don’t work for eufy it’s just the system we used I’m sure there’s other systems as good.

Shocking but sadly no real surprise in the tiny villages. As for your tools, this may sound silly but spray them pink. No village macho man would be seen using them plus it makes them near impossible to resell. Good luck in the future.
