does the adjective "mismo/a" always come before the noun it modifies? (duolingo often dings me when I get the order mixed up)
Not always. There are some cases when you can put "mismo/a" after the noun. For example: "El profesor mismo dijo que no hiciéramos la tarea" = The teacher himself said not to do the homework. In this case "mismo" means "himself". 😊
