Loneliness and Pressure: How Society Fails Men Today| Redefining Wisdom Ep.051
Mike Van Pelt is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, and men’s life coach leader. He is the founder of True Man Life Coaching and host and creator of the popular men’s podcast, True Man Podcast.
Being a man has become a challenge in today’s society, especially for the younger generation. It has become increasingly hard to define what a man should be, and the behaviors and expectations associated with being one. Men are flat-out checking out of society and isolating themselves due to the unrealistic expectations society has imposed upon them. This has led to a dangerous rise in suicide rates and to the loneliness epidemic crisis.
Mike shares his insights and knowledge as a men’s life coach about the current state of men’s mental health, and the reason many of them are struggling in today’s society. He also shares his version of the elusive definition of masculinity, differentiating toxic vs. healthy masculinity, and what we could do to help them overcome this concerning problem.

    I met a girl who had a 2 year old daughter and wanted to have a family together. I stayed when she started to complain and nudge me to change in subtle ways. I stayed when her ex assaulted me in the park. I proposed to her and swallowed that pause before she said yes. I stayed when she, pregnant with our little boy, said she can't feel the connection with her child. She gave birth and the same cycle of molding me continued so I put a stop to it. This is just my experience and surely there are faults in me but if it's never good enough because social media shows that you can have so much more. And even though I know single people who go the route of not attaching to women and just cruising through life, I'm still of the opinion that a significant amount of the female population have lost the plot and men, being the logical creatures that we are, are finally waking up to see that the emperor has no clothes.

      I'm sorry to hear that brother. I cannot imagine what you went through. But you are right, it's so hard these days. It seems a lot of women live in a disorted reality in which they feel entitled to receive the world in exchange of nothing. I wanna believe though that the majority of them are more grounded and have a better understanding how a committed relationship works and looks like.

    well said my friend! I agree with most points you're making. I think online dating gives people unrealistic expectations, and a TON of good people are getting left on the sideline because their profile just doesn't give off the right vibes. However, one thing that no one seems to ever mention is obesity rates - I know that this might be more of an American problem, but I feel like with obesity rates so high these days, there's a ton of people that just aren't attracted to each other. Yes, inner beauty is incredibly important, but physical attraction is still an important part of the equation for a successful relationship. No one seems to mention that when it comes to why people aren't getting together as much as they were in the past

    • @redefiningwisdom
      @redefiningwisdom 2 місяці тому

      I agree with what you are saying, online dating has quote-on-quote destroyed the whole dating experience by creating unrealistic expectations and the impression of unlimited options in a society that has grown with a sense of entitlement. And you might be up to something when it comes to obesity rates, at least here in America, and the lack of attraction to one another.

    I think that hetero men and hetero women aren't having any dating problems. I think the core demographic of people having dating problems are non hetero women who are into both sexes. They tend to be the least likely to know how dating men works, compared to hetero women. And hetero and bi men who are raised in families who don't know how to raise boys to become attractive to hetero women. They don't tend to know how dating women works. But most hetero men and hetero women are dating, having sex, getting married, etc. The data tends to get skewed because the people who make the studies have a habit of lumping all sexualities together, and framing the results as hetero based results. Which then they create these supposed solutions which many of them really only apply to non hetero people, not to hetero people. Things like, "a man being successful doesn't matter to women". That may be true for a non hetero woman dating a non hetero woman, but hetero women absolutely care about a hetero mans success.

    • @redefiningwisdom
      @redefiningwisdom 5 місяців тому

      That's an interesting argument you are bringing up. I wonder what percentage of hetero men and hetero women are not are not having problems forming serious committed relationships. I do have both male and female single friends who are struggling when it comes to dating, to the point that a few of them have given up. Now, I'll admit that the people I know are not a significant representation of what's happening in the dating world. You might have a valid point there, I never thought about looking it from that angle.

    • @AetheriusComics
      @AetheriusComics 5 місяців тому

      @@redefiningwisdom Yeah I have friends who struggle in dating and feel like giving up too. What I've noticed about all of them is: 1) The guys I know who are hetero, either come from single mother homes, or they have a father but he's very submissive. 2) The women I know who struggle are all bi on some level, with a similar family structure as the guys I mentioned. The guys never were taught how to be attractive to women. These women were never taught how to attract quality men, but what makes it worse is that when you're a bi woman, you can get into female on female relationships very easily, which becomes like an addiction. The result is they never spend enough time learning about how men work, so they always end up in failed situationships with men. Plus, they tend to go about dating men with the same mentality as when they date women, which doesn't work. The guys I know who do well with women, know how to attract women, and they all come from solid traditional households. Same with the women who are doing well with men who I know. The Hetero women who are having a hard time with dating, tend to come from the single parent home to some degree, and they tend to be really out of shape and out of touch with how to interact with people properly, due to lack of upbringing. Forgot to mention, when I want to the Mall the other day, in Houston, their main mall, wow, tons and tons of guys and girls dating each other, holding hands, flirting, and it seemed like mostly a upper middle class of people. And the single men and women were trying real hard to look sexy to each other. Lots of competition. But they all looked like people who know how to attract the opposite sex.

    • @redefiningwisdom
      @redefiningwisdom 5 місяців тому

      @@AetheriusComics You might be onto something. However, I will raise the argument that there also might be a high probability that people who grew up in traditional households are also struggling with dating mostly because of traumas in childhood (school, bullying, etc), shaping some of their belief systems, and then adding on top of that what they might see on social media ("girls are only looking for guys with height, money, status, etc", and "guys are only looking to sleep around and never settling down"). Their reality can get distorted, believing that they either don't meet the unrealistic high standards or that there is no one good available, that all the good potential partners are already taken. At the end of the day, I think one of the biggest issues is our perception of the world and the stories we have told ourselves. Because we will always find evidence of what we believe in. Just a theory I have.

    • @AetheriusComics
      @AetheriusComics 5 місяців тому

      @@redefiningwisdom Your point that there also might be a high probability that people who grew up in traditional households are also struggling with dating mostly because of traumas in childhood (school, bullying, etc). In households that present themselves as traditional but actually aren't when you look closely, yes, but not households that are actually traditional. Like for instance, it's not social media that tells traditional families that hetero girls like height, money and status. It's the result of hetero girls and hetero women's choices that they see in real time. Traditional people are very focused on, 'what is', and not much on, 'what which group would like it to be', or what a misunderstood perception. And they are aware that girls of other sexualities tend to want different things than hetero girls when it comes to dating. Non traditional families are usually not very aware of, what is, in this case for instance. A boy in school can see that just about all the girls who are enthusiastically into their boyfriends, are dating guys taller than them. They hear the short jokes from girls. While his single mother goes on completely unware of this, telling her son that girls don't care about height. Even though she herself has never seriously dated a guy shorter than herself.

    2 things: 1) Some women need to bring their standards back into Earth’s gravitational field. Looking only for 1~10% of men is a losing effort. Many of the rest of us are far from perfect (and farther from rich) and we have different interests, gregarious and introverted. We also have nothing to do with the online neckbeard/incel stereotypes who pollute comments sections. 2) Men need to get out of these red/black pill echo chambers and actually listen to women who aren’t the stereotypes being presented on these ridiculous podcasts. Have the sense to know that these people are not even a substantial minority of women. Bonus: 3) UA-cam needs to, at long last, drop its obsession with money and get rid of the content creators who are promoting these destructive gender wars. From these fake “Alpha males” to the harpies hopping on the 4B bandwagon, these people contribute nothing of value to the community and should be given the boot.

    Sorry but men have it harder than women when it comes to dating, point blank period. Women may not like the majority suitors but they at least have the options to choose whereas men have to become something to get options, women are just born with options so it’s not the same.
