Investigating America’s Most Infamous Border
Our road trip across the United States would not be complete without a stop at our border with Mexico. So we spent a few days in the El Paso area, learning from locals and experts on immigration policy, the politicization of the wall, and what the reality of what life near the border is like.
About us: we are two college students who are genuinely curious about the wide variety of people and perspectives across the United States. This summer, we are traveling the country to answer the question: what is the current state of America? Follow along to learn as we go.

48 Hours on the West Side of Chicago
2:32 is so true, I'm sure its something you get growing up anywhere near the ocean, but the ocean really does become a part of you when you're living on the coast of Maine. One of the first things you notice if you move away from it, is the smell. The smell of low tide permeates about a 1/2 mile sometimes for almost half of the day, and its a distinct smell, and when its high tide you have the salty breeze instead. The ocean becomes part of your life, even if you never go in or on it, its unavoidable. Something about its dominating presence is so magical.
This is nothing, i work 28 days a week 31 hours a day at the ballcrushing factory, where they crush my balls
The real brutal fishing jobs are the processing ships that follow the fishing ships, where guys process fish 16+ hours a day
Hey what’s the name of the instrumental ?
10:57 joker
they have only 8 years of education and it shows...
This documentary is stellar - the captain seems like such a down to Earth dude.
And this is where the gender equality, ends. Sorry, it's the truth !
This is a great documentary of the real American story.
Meth
As a welder patch, that exhaust leak up where you sleep, brother. Peace and love. May your trips be safe and cargo be plenty.
Great documentary. I would be interested to see the commercial side of this, how is it different for guys working for big fishing companies? You seemed to really ask the hard questions that brought out the crux of self-employed fishing. I have an immense respect for firefighters, loggers, hardworking men, and now fishermen too.
So why have a wife and 4 kids knowing full well what you do for a job since 14yo? Stop your crying.
"The captain was hesitant, but once he knew we werent traditional media" In other words, once he knew you werent going to lie and create false narratives to fit your agenda. Insane how far weve fallen.
Yuck....I'm sorry, but wtf does he and people that think like him is the meaning of life? You work to live not live to work. Like c'mon people, enjoy the FINITE amount of time you have on this rock with the people you care about and those that care about you.
Did anyone catch that captain had a weed vape in his hand lolol
You guys are great story tellers. You’re going somewhere
One of the worst career paths in the country..
Would it truly be a safety hazard if he used a sort of slip on extender that he removed when he removed his hand, to extend that handle he has to hunch over to grab?????? His back must be truly just in agony all the time
Not hunters, gamblers with a boat.
2:16 I see no DEI there. U guys have to add some kind a lesbian women to help ))))
SO YOU WANNA BE A FISHERMAN?? SPOT ON BROTHER !! NB MA !! NOTHING LIKE DEADLIEST CATCH $$$ HYPE? THANKS FOR SHARING THIS STORY!! THE GOVERNMENT IS KILLING THIS INDUSTRY!!!
Respect for these workers, but from a viewer perspective, the captain seems to feel "trapped" in some ways by his boat and job, all he has in mind and mouth is his job and making money, not seeing his kids growing older or his own wife, a time money cannot rebuy. Hell the health toll too, I started working pretty young in pretty physical jobs, seen plenty of "old wolves" that have been there for 15+ years, all telling you "don't make the same mistake I did, life is made to be lived, not to create money you will not take to your grave, it cannot rebuy your time or health", and I have seen myself growing tired and in pain from these long night and physical shifts, not seeing my family and such. It is not worth it, never is. I feel sad and sorry for this guy in some way, it's not a way of living to be prisoner and slave of your job and income. Hell he won't even be able to live a peaceful retirement, he has no savings ! I feel like America and the "american dream" should not be celebrated (if you see what I mean) that way, working 80 hours weeks or 50 hours shifts is nothing "honorable", it's being trapped in ana awful system that will kill you. I hope these guys will be find, my thoughts are with them.
I'm so glad im getting out of shipping out. I was on deep sea so it wasn't as bad as this but still. I got tire of being treated like shit and spending half my time away from my family on a piece of shit ship because the company didn't want to spend the money to make our lives better.
There is so much he has seen and experienced, and he still has a sense of humor.
This was great! I love how they let us see their boat and their work.
I've been out to sea for 70 days. This dudes crying about 8 days. Get out of here.
absolutely mindblown.
These are the guys I like! The blue collar man that will stay at work all day everyday! Thanks to them I get to stay at home the other 14 hours of my day. I appreciate being able to have a life and enjoy what I would like to enjoy. They can enjoy being a slave of their labor.
I left WV 33 yrs ago and have never regretted it. No jobs, just drug issues and poverty. I was raised in suffocating poverty as was my parents who had 8th grade education. WV is a beautiful place but will remain as it is for many years to come.
I get super tired just watching him lol
I'd be perfectly happy in a 9-5 office job if it actually paid well enough.
Humble guy. Respect. Trying to actually teach us from his mistakes 💯 🙏
lol I skipped ahead in the video and was like this guys sounds like a maineah sure enough he is lol
What he said about government regulations put in place to eliminate small and private businesses so massive companies can come in and eat up all the employment and profits is true
Price gauging and inflation are different.
"Everyone earns the same amount and everyone is equal" These are great talking points about socialism. It never works. No matter how bad people want to believe, we are not equal. Everyone should have equal rights under the law the people in general are not equal. Everyone has different interests, different capabilities and physical differences. When you try to create a Utopia where everyone is exactly the same it is always destined to fail. How long do you think people will continue to work hard to produce for the community when they get paid exactly the same as everyone else whether they work hard or not? People realize they don't have to work and can be lazy while being treated the same as the people that do and thus the conflict begins.
I respect this man. His views are kinda sad to me. What's the difference between a full time addict and his lifestyle? People gamble, abuse substances, and have similar obsessions to this man's job. I understand he's fishing at sea, that he is ambitious and motivated so he makes his choices. But he's got a family, and a life...
Hey man I wish you the best! This was a really informative video. Kinda speechless! Carry on, thanks!
Awesome video, awesome people, greetings from a fisherman from Bulgaria
That's just sad. Shitty conditions. Shitty hours. Shitty job. They do it cus they don't have other options. Respect to these guys pushing like that.
whats so new about FREEDOM ?
Yeah , fuck that shit. Not worth the time & effort.
You’ve never felt joy and happiness like doing 40-50hours and then getting to lay down for a few hours 😂😂 it’s hard to decide to eat and then lay down or just lay down
Great snippet showing hardships of life on a boat
This is what its like living on the coast and your trade is on a boat. you don't get the luxury of 24 on 24 off. you got a full week on 19-21 on - 4-5 off each day. Its miserable, but when you're on you're fuckin on.
It’s pronounced “apple- at-cha” great video though
Captain should stay single then
All that for 75k a year smh
Flex Seal needs to sponsor them
