If your IT manages the asset something as simple as screen timeout cannot be managed by the end user in some instances. Depends on the asset rules dictated by the IT.

when they let them go, they at least need to make sure they're rehirable for someone else and hopefully not broadcast out that they're low performers if they really aren't :(

the dichotomy that drives me nuts at work is this. you're trying to make yourself as marketable and as useful as possible meanwhile they're trying to make you feel as useless and demean you as much as possible so you have no idea what your true potential is so you have no negotiation skills. you're held to absolutely impossible standards, so you keep trying to grow and push yourself, but its all on your dime and expending your own personal energy. and they do this to everyone until they burn out, and you realize you're stuck in a rat race they've created because they refuse to simply accept and assess your current status and potential. so you can't ever really organically grow until you can see outside that circle of emotional blackmail. so what's everyone do, work theater and try to grow on the downlow but sometimes you're really shooting in the dark if you want to stay with the company without being able to have real growth conversations. i know where I want to go, and how I want to grow, but if I don't luck out on the alignment, it comes off as a mismatch that I'm not offering them the value they want.

the scary thing was before, I want to say pre 2010... you could easily get like 100k in credit card debt with interest payments that would end up higher than your paycheck. and then the payday loans were even worse. but now if you even get 2-3k in debt , it can be just as insurmountable.

re work from home. yeah i moved further away, in a much lower tax area. i had to cut my costs somehow since pay wage has been stagnant for so long. and i already told them, when i have to come back rarely, I'm not spending a penny down there, period.

back then, $1400 stimmy was rent, or at the very least a few months of groceries. now, that isn't even half a mortgage. of course keep in mind back then, rent was frozen anyway, but taxes and bills weren't... kind of a weird little glimpse back in time. and people with kids were getting a credit on each kid too. but I lost track because there were several iterations of it, if I recall. it did backfire though because a metric ton of people pumped it into the digital monies instead of trickling it down, especially since a lot was still closed and they couldn't buy anyway.

you're spot on though, it's bad optics to treat return to office as a punishment, meanwhile aint no jack shit getting done in the office. If I don't get a conf room immediately upon getting there, and effectively stay in there all day, I get nothing done because of interruptions. everyone walking around socializing still exists, nothing's been done to curtail that. at the end of the day, it's 100% a leadership issue, and leadership is deflecting on everyone but themselves.

soon i think if people refuse to come back, they'll replace them all with h1b's and effectively gut remote work. i hope that's not true but that's what it looks like.
