Austin Valley Model Railway (N-Gauge)
This Chanel will have updates to my new layout as it undergoes construction. My first layout had to get dismantled in June 2021 as I moved house, so this is the sequel to my first layout which has been in the planning for about 2 years. As well as layout updates I plan to have running session videos once the layout is up and running and possibly loco reviews. In the meantime I have had fun with making temporary dioramas or dioramas in a day as I like to call them. I am always keen to hear your advice and thoughts on every video
Happy Modelling 👍

Hi Nat. Nice work around the turntable.
Hello there Paul. I’m very happy with how that area turned out. Thanks for watching. Nat 🚂👍
It is always good to get another part of the layout with some scenery in it. The area around the turntable is coming along nicely Nat. The painted frogs have made quite an improvement to the looks of the track. Very painstaking work but the result show that its worth doing. Always nice to see a Streak running on a layout and all the better to see several. What is the problem with Britannia? On the whole is seemed to behave itself apart from the odd stutter. Stephen
Hello there Stephen, I’m pleased with how that area has deployed, I’ve had a rough plan for that area on SCARM for a year or so but it’s nice to see it on the layout now. The Britannia behaved well in the clips that were in the video, I had to cut out quite a bit and re film several times it would stutter cut out and occasionally stop altogether for no fathomable reason all the pickups have been cleaned as has the track. Thanks for watching. Nat🚂👍
Hi Nat! Looks like you enjoyed putting this spooky tale together! Happy Halloween! :) Cheers, Ian.
Hello there Ian, yes I had great fun. It was tricky getting my head around how to edit it together but I got there in the end. Thanks for watching, Nat 🚂👍
Very enjoyable Nat. I can see you and a lot of fun putting this together. Stephen
Hello there Stephen, it was great fun a little tricky to edit but I got there in the end. Thanks for watching, Nat 🚂👍
Hi Nat! Love the way you've added the track across the bridge! Great idea to make a template first so you knew where to cut and place the sleepers! Great job wrangling your foam into position too! You can never have too many clamps! I don't envy you painting all of those point frogs, but they do look much better once done! Enjoy your holiday! All the best, Ian.
Hello there Ian, Glad you like the track across the bridge I’m very happy with how it went and looks better than I first envisioned it would. You’re certainly right there Ian you never can have too many clamps. I had a brilliant holiday thank you it was nice to get a break from everything. Thanks for watching, Nat 👍🚂
The bridge has come out very well Nat Interesting to see how you made sure the sleepers lined up with the crossbeams on the bridge. The view along the cutting with the retaining walls each side already looks good. It is going the look great once its finished. Enjoy your holiday. Stephen
Hello there Stephen, I’m very pleased with how it’s all turned out. I had a brilliant holiday thank you. Nice to get a break from everything. Thanks for watching. Nat 🚂👍
Hi everyone, Sorry for the issues with the audio in this video. I will make sure that in future I thoroughly check all the video and audio to avoid issues slipping through. Thanks for understanding, Nat 🚂👍
please do not take this the wrong way, but you need to reduce the footage sound when doing a voice over. To do that, disconnect the footage sound and then reduce it during your voice overs. Your videos will be much better then 🙏
@@bramelsheretan thanks for your advice. I usually check the to make sure that the whole video is perfect it seems I missed some issues with the audio thanks for pointing it out I will try to make sure it doesn’t happen in any other videos. Thanks Nat 👍🚂
Good morning Nat! I've always wanted to visit the Severn Valley Railway, but have never had the chance! Your video has given me a great flavour of what I could see, especially if I visited on a Diesel Gala day! I loved seeing Whistler 40 106, as it was my favourite loco when I was at school, and I had its number written across my havosac!!! Great memories! Cheers, Ian.
@@iansngauge Hi Ian. I would 100% recommend the SVR beautiful scenery and a great day out. Glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some memories. Nat 🚂👍
Good evening Nat! The painted frogs turned out looking great! You must be very pleased with the effect! Removing sleepers from the track going over the bridge is also a neat idea! I think it will make both the track and bridge look much better! I enjoyed the running session, with lots of trains running simultaneously - it must have been quite nervy! :) All the best, Ian.
@@iansngauge Evening Ian, I really like the effect with the points and the bridge. It was quite nervy especially when at one point I had a loco stall and there was almost a calamity 😱.Thanks for watching. Nat 🚂👍
very nice train collection!
Thanks glad you like it 👍🚂
Enjoyed the update Nat. Johnathan has already asked the question I had about painting the insulfrog points. It does make a huge difference and you've done a good job at getting a realistic effect. If you have a multimeter you might just want to test to check electrical continuity over the plastic bit of the frog - there shouldn't be any of course. Occasionally metallic looking paints have some metal in them to give the effect (not sure what it is). I am sorry not have replied to your earlier request for things I'd like to see in the running session but I was more than happy with your selection. It must have taken a while to get that recorded and I did like having the three trains running one behind the other. It also really showed how your layout is taking shape and becoming a real place. Stephen
Hi Stephen I’m really pleased with how the points look I have now tested them at there is no problem with any electrical issues my plan now is to start making the detail changes to all of the points on the layout in an upcoming video. Not to worry glad you enjoyed the running session it took me a good few hours getting it filmed but it was well worth it. Thanks for watching Nat 🚂👍
Fantastic running session loving the 52s can't wait to see more 👍🏻
@@darrenfawkner2018 thanks the class 52s are my dads favourite loco. glad you enjoyed 👍
that is a lot of rolling stock, great layout
@@bramelsheretan thanks. 👍🚂
Hi Nat, I don't like the look of Insulfrogs either and agree they stand out like a sore thumb (on any layout). I was surprised at how effective painting them has been in making them look loads better. Out of interest have you tested whether or not the silver paint is electrically conductive (I guess a small gap could solve that problem if it is)? I also wonder how durable the paint will be over time with wheels regularly going over it, but even if a thin line gets rubbed off it's bound to still look much nicer than all plastic. Those facia panels have made a big positive difference - it's nice to see them most of the way around now! It's been a while since I've commented, but I've enjoyed seeing the various bits of progress over several months now - it's all coming together nicely 🙂
@@endoorrailway Hi Johnathan I too was amazed by the difference that painting the frog made. I haven’t tested to see if it is conducive as it was tested on spare points I would assume that being enamel paint it would not conduct electricity. Glad you like the panels it does make a huge difference. Thanks for watching Nat 👍🚂
A very impressive loco collection there Nat.
@@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge thanks Euan are there any locos you would like to see in the running session?
Good morning Nat! That's an impressive roster of locos you've collected! You need more BR Blue though! :)) I do like how you've acquired locos from across the eras though, which is something I consider every time I see a manufacturer bring out a new modern image loco, such as Revolution's class 66! The A4's are probably my favourite steamers too, although I also have a soft spot for Black 5's and 9F's! I've got Sir Nigel Gresley on preorder too, in its preserved livery of Express Blue - blue of course! :) All the best, Ian.
@@iansngauge morning Ian There might be more br blue to come👀. Having the wide variety of locos means that I can run what I want and if I’m in a modern mood then modern locos it is and vice versa. Glad you enjoyed the video Thanks for watching Nat🚂👍
THat's and excellent representation of steam traction Nat. The London Transport Pannier would not have been under LMS. London Transport was its own public transport organisation although it did share some tracks with some the Big Four and BR and still does with Network Rail (as Transport for London). The range of diesel locos and multiple units is very impressive. Stephen
Hi Stephen Thanks for your knowledge there. Are there any locos that you would like to see added n the running session for the next video. Thanks for Watching Nat 👍🚂
Just catching up on videos after my weekend away. You have been busy Nat and it was really good to see in the running session all your efforts bearing fruit as the layout takes shape. Just about to watch the meet the fleet video so no doubt I'll get a look at the TINGS purchases. Stephen
Hi Stephen Hope you had a good weekend. It’s great having more and more of the layout coming together like a jigsaw 🧩. I’m really enjoying filming the running sessions experimenting with different angles (good and bad 😂) yes as you might have seen in the meet the fleet video I got a dapol br green western and some container wagons (no containers yet got to wait for them🎄) thanks for watching Nat 🚂👍
You're making some excellent progress Nat! Love that you're making the hillside elements removable, which is something I'm hoping to achieve myself! Congratulations on the subscriber count, I see you're already halfway to 300 now! I like your new additions from TINGS, especially those wagons! Can't wait to see how you progress... Cheers, Ian.
Hi @@iansngauge I have a few ideas that I’m going to try regarding the removable section so that the seam isn’t noticeable I’ll see how it goes. I’ve been blown away with the recent support to the channel from my most recent videos and shorts. Thanks Nat🚂👍
GOING BACKWARDS ? Not impressed with todays layouts. I had N scale large mainline exhibition layouts 30 years ago, with fully functioning signalling that operated exactly as per real life, track circuits are unavoidable for this (which cost just 1p each) !!!! Scratchbuilt pointwork with realistic curvature (commercial products are virtually all unrealistically too sharp), with the track plan complying with real life rules concerning the positioning of points. Fully functioning overhead catenary, with some Electric locos actually collecting current from the overhead wire, with no issues crossing baseboard joins ! Both my German & Japanese N scale layouts appeared in a number of Modelling magazines from Britain's (Continental Modeller) to Japan !!! NOTE: The expansive German Sommerfeldt range, provides accurate fully functioning Catenary equipment for many European Railway types of Catenary including Britain in N, HOm & HO/OO scales ! The first layout seen, has a track plan that looks like a toy train set. Long dead straights with absurd 90 degree curves. No comprehension of signalling, and what appears to be Modern overhead EMU's, with no catenary in sight, and steam era scenery. What all this reveals is today's modellers appear to have absolutely no comprehension of the complex rules covering the operation of real railways. And DCC seems to be simply making the whole issue a million times worse, and far more expensive. It's simply a game of "Toy train Sets" today !!!!
For some people including me and my dad this hobby is an escape from reality and stress of real world and different people like to see and build different styles of layouts be it complicated or a simple oval it’s whatever makes you enjoy it, I understand that for some people it means having every detail and other just seeing trains go round. Thanks for watching.👍 Nat 🚂
@@Nat-AVMR-N-gauge It means making things work as they do in real life, and moving on from the nasty cheap "Commercial" toys companies such as Hornby continue to produce. Just compare British outline with German & Japanese ranges, where professional "Models" are the name of the game. Which of course benefits all customers whether you're an expert real railway engineer like myself, or just into the hobby for the fun of it !!!!
Looking good mate can't wait see the hillside develop 👍🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@darrenfawkner2018 thank you. I’m now just trying to decide where to go with it next I think I need to build some of the castle that is going up there to help me decide what to shape first. Nat 🚂👍
Good morning Nat! Looked like it was a good show! Enjoyed seeing the Rapido 'Peak' samples, as I've got my pre-order in for a class 45! Cheers, Ian.
Good morning Nat! The 37 looked really good, and seems to run much better than mine when running slowly on DC! I think I'm going to have a similar issue with that viaduct! I'm planning on using the Metcalfe kit but don't think I've got enough height from the top of the foam down to the baseboard, so some surgery will be required!!! All the best, Ian.
Hi Ian, with cutting down the viaduct I tried at first using a saw but I noticed it started to leave a ripped edge on the brickwork. Instead I used a scalpel and very carefully cut along a pencil line (drawn earlier) it gave me a very good finish. Cutting it after it was built made it harder to cut it but I think it gives me a more accurate cut than if I were to have cut each piece individually as you might get slight discrepancies. Sorry for the long reply but thought it would be helpful for if you use the metcalfe kit Thanks Nat 🚂👍
@@Nat-AVMR-N-gauge - Thanks for the advice Nat! I haven't looked at the kit in detail yet, but I was thinking about cutting it down before building it! I'll definitely reconsider this! The other option I was looking at was using the kit as a test run, and then building something custom! Cheers, Ian.
I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't like a Class 37. The viaduct looks good where it is, and it was good to see the running session which also showed off your wiring of that section to store the class 68. Stephen
@@Elvenhome I love the class 37 not my favourite loco but it’s up there, I had a lot of fun filming the running session now that the wiring was reworked it gives me much more manoeuvrability. Thanks Nat 🚂👍
Good progress being made Nat. To remove the rapido coupling on a Farish 66 you need to pull the whole bogie out. Once out use a tiny Jewellers screwdriver to remove the plastic frame around the wheels. Be careful as you remove the frame as the front part holds in a tiny spring behind the Rapido coupling. Cheers Euan
@@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge Hi Euan Thanks for the advice on the class 66 coupling I shall give that a try at some point. I hadn’t realised the frame came off from around the wheels. Thanks Nat 🚂👍
very nice
@@bramelsheretan thanks 👍
Nice update Nat, the viaduct looks really good - I do like the Metcalfe kits. Thanks for sharing. Chris
@@Amberlea-Model-Railway thanks Chris I think they look brilliant and are usually pretty easy to assemble Nat🚂👍
Good evening Nat! It's interesting how you isolated the sidings to allow multiple locos to be run in the area! I hear people say that DCC is too complicated all of the time, but this appears to be way more involved as this particular problem just doesn't exist in DCC layouts! I enjoyed the show segment! I'm off to GETS next month, so this was an nice appetiser and has got me enthusiastic about my visit! :) All the best, Ian.
It was interesting to see how you deal with wiring to allow you to have isolated sidings. I thought the use of the terminal blocks was very clever to give you so many options for routing locos while isolating others. The show looked a good one and I notice you lingered on the stand with the O gauge locos. I think if I moved away from N I would go to O. The O gauge layout at the show looked very good. Stephen
Hi Stephen, the new wiring gives me a lot more options for running session and shunting which is what I was after. the detail on the O gauge models always blows me away, my dad has OO so if I were to change scale it would be to O gauge to have something different. Thanks Nat
Hello Nat ! I see my compatriots are already subbed - so I'm late to the party so to speak. Neat bit of work on the border and embankments. Layouts ways come to life once the scenery starts to go in. Cheers Euan
@@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge Hi euan thanks for watching better late than never 👍
Good morning Nat! I'm a great fan of using greyboard for many things, and while I use it for one of my backscene sections, I'd not considered using it at the front of the layout! I had been intending to use thin MDF, but now I'm reconsidering! The scenery is going to look awesome due to your perseverance in creating some excellent structure for it around the layout! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to next! All the best, Ian.
Hi Ian I’ve used 3mm greyboard and although it is tough to cut and takes perseverance it was well worth it and it is very sturdy. Thanks Nat 👍🚂
@@Nat-AVMR-N-gauge - Yes, I used 3mm greyboard for the section of my backscene I referred to! It's been in place for over two years now, so is quite hard wearing! As Stephen points out, I'm not sure how well it will take paint, but you could try covering it in something like Mod Podge before applying paint, or even try glueing on a paper based backscene! I await your experiments with bated breath! :) Ian
Hi Nat, you're making great progress on the layout 🤩 You should give Delux Materials Tacky Wax a go on your droopy couplings 🤭 it's non permanent , a tiny bit will keep the coach attached and not effect the movement around corners 👍 Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️
Thanks for the suggestion I’ll give it a go. 👍
All that effort to get the structure right is really going to pay off when you start doing the scenic work Nat. A you say it's going to look so good around that corner with scenic material in and the track ballasted. I admire your perseverance cutting all that 3mm card and shaping it. Before you paint any of it I suggest you experiment to see how it responds to paint, especially if it is water based. I came a cropper early on when I was building Grey Havens with card covered foam board that turned up like stale bread after I put some paint on it. I think because you have used 3mm card and provided you don't use too watery a paint it will be fine, but better safe than sorry. Stephen
@@Elvenhome hi Stephen I’m really happy with how it’s going. Thanks for your advice on the grayboard I’ll do some experimenting. Thanks Nat🚂👍
Best class of steam engine right here fellas
Hi Nat, sometimes you can pair up couplings that may be odd heights or check to see if this coupling has a spring in which case removing and refitting can work. I have a City of Birmingham coronation class, a beautiful runner too. All the best.
Hi Nat! Loved those kebab skewer strengthening aids! Great that you can move large sections of landscape around to work on! I'm definitely looking to do something similar on Shelfington in various areas! Looks like you've got some nice new stock! Shame about the coupling issue! It looks like the coupler on the tender is sitting too low! I can only mirror what others have said about using some sort of magnetic coupling! I've also had success with Blu Tack and Black Tack, although that was more about keeping the coupler in its pocket rather than making the connection stronger! Was surprised that the loco with the DCC chip ran at all, but good to see you sorted that with a blanking plate! All the best, Ian.
Lots of new locos nat. The Coronation class loco looks very good but alas suffers from the curse of the saggy coupling. Looking at the shots you took I am not sure the coupling itself is sagging very much, but the coupling pocket sits lower than the pocket on the carriage and so any sag makes it difficult to couple. Not a lot you can do to put that right. I have seen on the N Gauge Forum people suggesting to use some Tacky Wax if you encounter this problem to hold the coupling in place. It is made by Deluxe and often used to fix figures to layouts especially where you might want not to fix permanently. Alternatively y could change the coupling either to a dapol easy shunt or a magnetic coupling, but as Endoor says that would limit both which carriages the loco could pull and which locos could pull any carriage. Personally I would want to be swapping over couplings too often. Stephen
Hi Nat, nice work on the scenic strengthening! I think I too would go for Hunt magnetic couplings between the new steamer and the Pullmans, but that wouldn't be any good if you want to mix what it pulls, or what other locos pull that train. I imagine the surprise decoder in your EWS Class 66 wasn't getting enough power for its circuits to work until you had about 5 Volts at the rails - I think that (or maybe as much as 7V) is the minimum level decoders have to work at to be NRMA DCC-compliant - so that would be why it would suddenly spring into life.
Hi Nice update there, good progress and nice loco's too. Thanks
get a hunt magnetic coupling for the tender and the brake coach. that's probably the easiest option.
nice train collection!
Hi, to join track lengths on a curve it works best if the joins on each rail are about 40 mm a part. So cutting one rail on each piece and the sliding them together keeps the track in the correct shape. I made the same error years ago and had it pointed out to me. I glued my track to the board with Copydex using track formers and weight to hold it in place for 30 minutes. Hope this helps.
terrific layout and well planned out. I can’t imagine trying to change brushes etc on an N gauge loco etc, but you can certainly squeeze so much more in. Thanks for sharing Regards Charlie
Well done Nat - excellent progress - very hard to maintain that curved join on the track - we have all been there. Regards Steve
Morning Nat! Great to see the layout growing with the branchline now connected! Must be very satisfying to get the trains running on the new track, even if it's only temporary for now! Loved the solution for implementing the hard standing with the multiple layers of greyboard! Very well thought out! All the best, Ian.
great progress, and love those green coaches, nice collection
Real progress there Nat. It's always a great feeling when you get a train to run to or from a new part of the layout. Stephen
