Floating Wedding Chapel Turned Floating Condo
I saw the "Chapel on the Bay," (built in 2004 as a floating wedding chapel and then converted into a 1050 square foot 2B 2B floating condo) at Melbourne Harbor Marina in August 2024. It was traveling north to Titusville, where a friend saw it there.
It is 60 feet long, weighs 33-tons, has fiberglass catamaran hulls with twin 115 hp Cunnins engines - top speed of 10 mph - plus a 30-foot steeple. Instead of an anchor, it has "spud poles" that push into the bottom and hold the boat in place, similar to the modern power-pole anchors fishermen use.
The original chapel operated between 2005 and 2013. It could accommodate 125 people with 16 pews, an alter, and a brides changing room.
The first floating chapel in the united States was the Episcopal "Church of Our Savior," built in 1834 for sailors. It was moored in lower Manhattan. Several more were built in the 19th century. Only 2 exist today in the world, the other one is in Australia (the inspiration for this one).

Stiltsville is an interesting village of six houses built on stilts of wood or concrete pilings buried in the shallow grass beds of Biscayne Bay, a mile south of Key Biscayne. In its prime in the 1950’s and 60’s, it consisted of 27 buildings, from simple houses to sprawling social clubs. But out in the open as they were, they suffered the exposure to extremes of weather, such as major storms, e...

    When the boat is in reverse, the captain turns and faces the direct of travel. He puts one hand on each shifter handle. On the end of each shifter handle is a button for the bow thruster direction, allowing him to drive it like a tractor or a bulldozer by bumping it in and out of gear.

    Most likely has a bow thruster also . Putting one engine forward and one reverse makes the boat crab sideways so he works the throttles and uses the bow thruster as needed . It's a gentle process generally , nudge wait nudge wait etc

  • @paynester883c
    @paynester883c Рік тому

    When maneuvering a boat of that size in close quarters it's more efficient to steer the boat using the differential thrust of the engines vs the using the rudders. This allows the skipper to face backwards when reversing. Also, this boat is not a Viking, it's a 72 Foot Merritt. There is a Viking of the same name but it's not this particular vessel. Hope that helps. Great video!!!

    • @ICWC1948
      @ICWC1948 Рік тому

      Thanks for that information. The dock master said it was 72 feet, so I should have guessed it was a different boat. So the skipper is just moving the throttles to each engine. It was impressive!

      While his docking skills were impressive, what is impressive is a 72' Merritt, I think I hear you say big ass boat in the video.
