We Pulled the Best Cards from 1981 Topps & 1989 Fleer… And STILL Lost Money
We ripped open a pack of 1981 Topps and 1989 Fleer baseball cards, chasing those legendary hits. Against all odds, we managed to pull two of the best cards possible: Fernando Valenzuela's rookie and Randy Johnson's rookie! Jackpot, right?
Not so fast. Even with these incredible pulls, we barely broke even-and that’s if we’re being generous. This video is the ultimate proof that opening vintage packs is a gamble, and the house almost always wins.
Stick around for the epic hits, the harsh truth about pack investments, and some good old-fashioned card-collecting fun!

Bird killer …the original. Randy Johnson was jealous of Winfield…
Dope borders though
The true profit are the cards we find along the way.
Almost got all the names right. Keep trying
Show them enough respect to learn their names at least.
Name butchery. It's just sad
Bro threw the secret rare to the side like it was old bath water lolol 😂😂
Any Pucketts?
So... what you're saying is it's guaranteed money, got ya! 🤑
1891 bowman? Ausom. Hey wait your video was black and white but wasn’t that too early for sound?
I bought an Allen and Ginter pack of cards. I got a Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig and Stan Musial
Keith. At the end. 😂
Love Jerry chiming in on how to pronounce his name😂
Gaylord Perry threw doctored balls. Grease, spit, etc. Not a knuckleball.
Ah yes
Its pretty fuzzy
For your sake, I hope you do worse next time
That chlamydia gum gets me everytime😅
Sal Boodera😎
Who sets the pack prices.
Capitalism. Worth what people will pay.
How much are the commons.
Pretty much worthless
The wax game is all about hoping for a PSA 10 (or 9 in the early 80s cards). But, if you can find 1-2 Gem grades per wax box, you can make great money. Easier said than done tho. The raw value is not worth it, especially when you’re putting up cards for sale that clearly will not gem. The only exception is pre-70s vintage.
You are not finding gem grade. Look at 89 UD griffey, 100,000 of the card have been submitted, but only 4,000 10s. Or 84 mattingly... 20,000 submissions with only 900 tens. Older cards did not have the production standards of today. Cards out of the pack are damaged, off center or printing defects. Banking on a ten will leave you very disappointed.
Walt Weiss second year
How much are the stickers.
Pretty much worthless
Did u sell it yet ?
Yes
Steve Howe was the NL ROY in 1980 and ended up being the poster boy for "one last chance" during the late 80s and into the 90s. That 81 Topps of his might get you a buck or 2.
Few cents, sure
That would have been a hot pack. Monk, Woodson, Joyner and Sharpe..
You put Fred McGriff up because he is a Hall of Famer.
The 81 pack is similar to buying a $20 lotto scratch off and winning $50
More of winning a free ticket...
@RobOpensWax yeah. You know the scam.
Thank you for proving that I should keep buying! 😂
I know right!
Do you do nhra cards?
I don't have any of those specific ones but do have a bunch of racing packs. Did one the other day and will do more over the next few days.
So we should buy all the junk wax we can get our hands on ? Or just 81 topps?
@@davemacdonald5942 just buy the cards :)
@davemacdonald5942 or more accurately... if you are looking to invest, the s&p 500 is better
One of favorite cards
The frank thomas
That Crabominable card is a good one.
Put it in a holder... gonna go sell it for 100,000 bucks.
Not a bad pack!! I was 13 in 1989 and I still cherish my Ken Griffey JR upper Deck rookie card!!
Hey Rob could you do a pack of yak packs?
I don't have any but they used to be like 10 bucks a box and now go for a lot more. i have not heard good things about them.
So I’ll decide 1991 fleer ultra
I guess someday already asked for a request of 91 upper deck so maybe it wouldn’t be a good idea. Could you try to do next time 1992 fleer ultra?
Lenny did have an 86 donruss which I believe was his rc
Learn how to pronounce their names. How disrespectful to the players.
they don't mind. I have received a lot of support from the MLB players community. Go look at the video of Jose Canseco commenting on my pronouncing his name.
You propound a quandary. This video has neither wax, nor junk wax. No hall of famers or wannabes. I really didn't want to 👍 but habit made it happen anyway. Rob may be a magician or mentalist
You got it, not wax just mind control.
Jerry Roodus? If you called him Jerry Royce then I would have died. Now get a video of Gary Reedus.
Always a good day when a Cleveland Indian is recognized. Big Joe
You pulled a good card
@jcbusfa could you tell me the one that was good?
@@RobOpensWax third to last card.
Was hoping you’d get a Diddymon 😂
Welcome me back from my 24-hour ban! All I did was tell the truth about someone who craves attention, and I was banned for cyberbullying. Boo hoo, UA-cam! My remark is that John Smoltz goes on the front row, Rob!!! First round HOF rookie card, pal!!!
I'm pretty sure Jack Morris has four rings... He was tough & deservedly in the HOF...
Once I saw the "corrected" Randy Johnson, without the Marlboro advert, I knew your Billy Ripken would be the black box. Still, you got a very nice wax box, with the Craig Biggio and all...
I am not sure what you are saying, I didn't ban anyone and never have.
@RobOpensWax Sorry, not you. It was on a political post. Sometimes I'm too honest & I need to shut it... I ❤️ your channel fullstop...
What are we doing here?
Not sure
Side note never do a video with your phone sideways makes the whole video smaller
Hey Michael, I do vertical videos for a few reasons, mainly because most people watch on their phones, and vertical makes it feel like they're holding the pack.
Sterling Sharpe was the first jersey I owned. His 18 TD season (his last) in 94 is still tied for 3rd all-time. It still hurts that his career was cut short. Hopefully the HOF calls his name this year.
Now this is different
Jeff Treadway has cross hairs over his cap, worth good money. Error card.
I'll subscribe when you learn to pronounce the names
Sorry you will never get to be subscribed
My first year of collecting. Had so many of these. I remember going back years later and finding Gooden, Clemens, McGwire, Puckett, Davis…. It was awesome.
I was a little kid in '85 and I got the same cards. Good times, right? Except no Mark...
