'Ol Dave was a great front man. Singer NO entertainer YES!

What kind of douchebag covers the lead guitarist's head with a crappy sign thrown on stage by the audience during a challenging guitar solo?

Steve Vai was unbelievable at this point - amazing playing and so much energy running about having fun while making it look effortless - why hes up there with the very best ever.

Vai was dominating until his guitar solo when Dave covered his head with a crappy sign someone threw onstage. Not exactly the work of a team player. This confirms what I've heard elsewhere about Dave having a terrible personality. The dude can barely sing, and then he screw's up Steve Vai's masterpiece solo for "Going Crazy." Amazing.

Got to say, I'm not a big Roth fan (nor a Vai fan) but I wish I could have seen this tour. They were at the height of having fun while playing and it was a well written album. That would have been a great show to see live.

Is there something specific about Vai you don't care for? Or is it more a matter of just liking EVH more?

@@Thompsongs I’m not even on Van Halen fan I was a Randy Road guy. Vai is a little too adventurous with his melodies for my taste. He’s got stuff I really like and stuff that I’m really bored by. It’s funny but my favorite thing by him is that crappy Ralph Macchio movie. 😂 It’s just a musical taste thing. I fully appreciate how incredible he is but if I want to listen to a guitarist at that level I’ll listen to Vinnie Moore or Andy Timmons. With guys at that level it’s just who plays stuff that you enjoy the most not who you think is better .

Awesome Footage of DLR Band..did anyone notice that the Vai's solo is still playing as dave covers his face at 1:57 I know this must be an edit tho. his hands aren't continuing to play just a funny observation! great stuff!

He's playing a long trill (one-handed technique) during that sequence instead of the original guitar part (probably because DLR has the sheet over his head).

J Black I know you have already been answered.....but pick up and electric guitar, plugged into an amp and see for yourself. With your fretting hand, tap the strings, slide up and down the neck etc...it will make noise..lol. You don't need to strum the strings normally with your picking hand. Vai is simply doing 'hammer ons' with his left hand.

DLR covering Vai's head during a challenging solo is a high level douchebag move. That would be like a football quarterback intentionally tripping one of his own players. What a prick.

Must be nice to NEVER hit a note from the original recording and still get paid. It's good to be Dave. His band was the best of the best though!
