Michigan-born, Manhattan-based American composer Stephanie Ann Boyd (b. 1990) writes melodic music about women’s memoirs and the natural world for symphonic and chamber ensembles. Her work has been performed in nearly all 50 states and has been commissioned by musicians and organizations in 37 countries. Boyd’s five ballets include works choreographed by New York City Ballet principal dancers Lauren Lovette, Ashley Bouder, NYCB soloist Peter Walker, and XAOC Contemporary Ballet’s Eryn Renee Young. Eero, a ballet commissioned by Access Contemporary Music and Open House New York, was written for the grand opening of the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport. Stephanie’s music has been praised as “attractive lyricism” (Gramophone), “[with] ethereal dissonances” (Boston Globe), “[music that] didn’t let itself be eclipsed” (Texas Classical Review), “arrestingly poetic” (BMOP), and “wide ranging, imaginative” (Portland Press Herald).

I heard this a couple years ago and it is almost haunting. The tone of the composition works perfectly with the cello. Love it.
"And, as an ex-violinist prone to obsessions with Barber, Ysaÿe, and Prokofiev..." I'd say, at least for the opening, you were much more obsessing with Sibelius.
I'd actually never heard the Sibelius concerto at the point in my life when the first movement was written.... I think it's just a simple, easy, dreamy rhythm for strings accompaniment and that made it an easy choice for both of us? But regardless, I'm grateful for the compliment : ) Thank you, Jasper!

nope. I didn't actually know any Prokofiev when I wrote this (I was 19)
Nicely worked-out piece of tonal cake without extravagant filling. It doesn't have to sound like Alan Hovhaness, but it would be nice if it did ! Very young forces here present an excellent presentation presently pleasant....
I fell in love with Hovhaness's work in middle-school strings class...and I'm guessing you know that he attended the New England Conservatory as well and I'm sure had student performances in this very hall? Either way, thank you for the lovely thought and reminding me of that connection!
Brilliant composition
This is a really nice work, I like it style format and its structure. I'm a amateur composer started at 65 years old I'm so glad we moved past the compositions of the 1960s-70-and 80s Modern music is now going in a nice direction that more people can relate to .
