Up north we do it because it’s not uncommon to have -40*f to -60*f days in the winter. (Just becomes a habit) 😅 also was taught it saves wear on starting components/glow plugs etc…
Hey! Aldo Abastta here, I’m Rafael Abasttas nephew from Laredo. I’ve went to some of your classes too when you were teaching up here at Central Motive Power back in the day in Denver. Funny to find you on UA-cam I was doing some diagnostic research. Rafael passed away in 2020 due to COVID, I don’t know if you heard, I’m sure you have. God rest his soul. But we’ll have to catch up next time your in Denver teaching or something. Still wrenching and working on diesels with my dad Marco. We do a lot of programming and diagnostic repairs.
Ty😊

My mileage was at 143,000. Other people with the same problem usually goes wrong at about 150,000.
This happened to me yesterday in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, on my way to Utah. It told me to service def system. Then about 5 min later came on and said I had 150 Mi to go. Then I pulled into a Loves started making phone calls looking on UA-cam and found out the (Diesel Exhaust Fluid injection pump) was the culprit. It was a pretty easy fix but you have to climb under the truck and it's connected to your exhaust. I had to order it to O'Reilly's and pick it up the next morning. Fixed it in the O'Reilly's parking lot and continued on my way, the code cleared all by itself about 50 miles down the road. My advice, once you see this pull over start youtubing the problem and then make your plan. Do not keep driving thinking it's going to go away cuz it won't. I tried to unplug my battery terminals that problem was still there no matter how long I unplugged them. In my eyes it was a blessing that I had 150 mile warning to figure out what I needed to get done, because I was pulling a 40-foot trailer and that would equal to a huge tow bill.
@@jakeswarm216 a trick to get u a few miles .. when u unplug the batteries, unplug all four terminals on both batteries, then on one side hold the positive cable and the negative terminal together. This depletes the capacitors in the ECM to reset it. Do this with the other side battery cables unhooked
Why no class action law suit? Stupid dangerous to force a 5 mph limp mode, maybe 50 mph. Imagine beeling stuck traveling in desert or snow country, 5 mph limp mode could be lethal.
Hello Tony, thanks so much for the great presentation! Nice diagrams and clear delivery! I am in the midst of replacing injectors on a 2004 LB7 with only 94k miles and there are two things I would really appreciate expert advice on: 1) On each side, the rear injectors had a load of gritty crud at the inlets, and corrosion outside the metal/metal sealing interface. Fairly clean at the front injectors and no corrosion, but both symptoms progressively worse towards the rear. Do you know what this would be from and how to protect against it? 2) I would like to leak test the installed return lines. I have seen a nice video of replacing the block banjo with a special one that allows the line and 4 injector return connections to be tested, and this does test all the line welds, but I don't have one and I would like to test the block connection too. The return line from the engine has the CP3 and the regulator on it ..... Would a vacuum or a pressure test be feasible on the line without leaking through or damaging those? Thanks so much for your consideration of these things.
It is common to find grit on the inlet of the fuel injectors. How to reduce that? Fuel filters! I push for a supplement fuel filter to add. Second, it is easier to buy a hand held vacuum pump from a local parts store. Vacuum test the return , may have to get creative with the plumbing but I have never had to on the LB7 s. Make sure you replace the banjo gaskets and torque to spec
Thank you Dude!!! I can always find what I'm looking for on the internet. Finally found your video. I already know it's a shorted out led light that I installed but I couldn't find the fuse. I wish they would name shit easier to figure out. As soon as I seen the fancy blue dash lights on and the then the fuse blew... now I can finally go to bed 🙂
Thanks for you patience and knowledge of repair vehicles you are a truly professional master ❤I would love to work with someone like you in a shop
No amount of maintenance is going to prevent. 1. Turbo Coolant line in the valley. 2. EGR cooler from cracking
@@mountainconstructions what’s your point? EGR cooler cracking is caused by air in coolant that expands in coolant. Coolant line can crack but not won’t take out the engine unless you ignore the temp gauge As a whole I have customers with the coolant line in the valley intact with over 200k miles.
@dieseltalkwithtonysalas8725 You'd be the minority then In Australia this engine is in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the turbo coolant hose ($2 worth) splits at around 180,000km, some sooner, some later. Doesn't make the $4000 job to repair it any less expensive Let's also add cylinders out of alignment, causing pressure around the No.4 rod connection point. There is a reason VM made 250,000 of these and 50,000 failed. Look it up
@@mountainconstructions I seem to Miss your point. You run things as you see fit Good luck
@dieseltalkwithtonysalas8725 You obviously seem to miss logic and facts that's right in front of your nose. My point is.... These engines are unreliable hand grenades... What part don't you understand 🤣🤣🤣 Christ, they are part of several class action lawsuits
@@mountainconstructions sooo it’s pissing match you search. The fact is I search for the best for my customer to work with what manufacturers give us to repair . We have had these engines to live longer. I work with a network of shops that share the same opinion. Instead of calling them unreliable, we do what we can to make them reliable. You have a complex where you find your ego in need for attention. You can move on and know you are the man. You win. Hope you feel better. I m too old to deal with immaturity. I’ve been in this industry for a long time. Google my name and diesel. This is something I do to help those that want it. Don’t bother responding . I have the option to ignore. Good luck
Simply a poor designed engine So many issues... Coolant Leaks in $$$$ places Over Soot Crank Flex 250,000 made, 50,000 failed. Shame as when they run, they are great
Im working on a 2006 ram 3500 that will start and run but I cannot get a scanner to connect to the ecm. Tried multiple different scanners. Nothing. This also is effecting the instrument cluster.
@@JaGGeR- quick check Disconnect the fan clutch connector. A fan clutch shorted can cause no communication to ECM. It’s a long shot but give it a try Also, Remove disconnect cluster and try to see if ECM talks

@@nelsongeorge6444 diesels for the longest time had a specification for crankcase pressure which was measured with a water manometer or gauge in inches of water. Manufacturers don’t give lately on today’s engine. Duramax LB7 for example did have a spec of 16 inches at 3100RPM

Did you figure it out?
@92Inquieto came up 2 other times so had the batteries disconnected once and the other time I used a code reader from the orileys to clear it. So far so good.
Hey buddy , I need help how to change my oil pump on my 2014 jeep grand Cherokee , what do I have to do I’m doing it myself , thank you
Hello, I am having an issue finding an accurate diagram showing a location for all LML engine sensors. Specifically, I need the EGR temp sensor #1 for a 2014 but would like a complete sensor location list if it's available. Thank you.
I have been a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for thirty years and you have been the only person to be very detail and professional about the explanation between the ECU ,TIPIM AND OBD 2 Connector. Thank you very much.
Tony I just want you to know that the fuel system you're talking about here does not suck the fuel from the tank. What is happening is the pressure in the supply line is being reduced allowing atmospheric pressure to push fuel through the system.
@@MylesSpengler don’t split hairs Negative pressure on one side creates a low pressure under atmospheric absolute pressure. In our trade anything under atmospheric is considered a vacuum. This why we measure the suction in inches of mercury. Suction is created to pull fuel from the tank to the injection pump Atmospheric on one side in the tank which needs to be vented and low pressure suction on the other. Geeez
well your dealing with junk
@@SteveCollins-r4m easy to make that comment but our mission is to help that customer and what they can do to lengthen the life of that “junk” as you say.
Hey Tony congratulations I have an issue wondering if you can help I’ll break it down as best as I can. I have a 2003 Duramax initially the customer had problems accelerating under load eventually the truck wouldn’t start so when I picked up the truck I was getting zero vacuum from the high pressure pump at the test port. Initially I replace the fuel filter with a ac delco but no luck so I cleared the fuel lines and remove the fuel pump to clear any debris. I didn’t find any debris but I did get it running eventually. Now it runs 4-6 vacuum, stays on and runs as long as I don’t do a sudden acceleration. Seems to bog down. My fuel pressure output is good till about 6-7k psi and then can’t keep up to the desired amount. After further testing I’m able to match the desired psi to over 15k with scanner at idle but not under load it dumps the actual psi under load. I removed the banjo at the junction block and only seen the high pressure pump bleeding out fuel not the fprv not sure what to do to finalize my diagnoses thanks in advance
We have a suspected air in fuel problem. The fllter head has been replaced with new OEM and still will kill once in a while then run smooth again. I recommended to my son to put a clear hose on the fuel return hopefully under the hood and run the clear line up under his windshield wiper to monitor while driving. Is this the easiest way to diagnose air in fuel? I'm thinking it HAS to be the issue but nothing is for sure so it'd be nice to confirm.
I still don’t trust filter head I apply a vacuum using a hand held vacuum pump. This is done with a liquid separator So the vacuum pump doesn’t suck fuel. This is done at the outlet line of the fuel filter housing. You apply about 12 inches of vacuum and see if it holds. If it doesn’t the filter head is leaking. If that’s ok, how do you know it’s fuel related? Do u have a scan tool or handheld to monitor fuel rail pressure?
Congratulations! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for suffering the heat to share this info!
I'm battling an issue with my 08 6.7L Cummins right now, of fuel de-rating under load, yet I get no codes. So in the worst method possible (throwing parts at it) I've made no headway. Under 60-70% throttle, 5th or 6th gear, say, climbing a mountain pass, commanded is at 22-23K. Rail Pressure (RP) is at same as commanded, then starts to drop as a little more throttle is input. RP drops to around 9-11k, and after 5-10 secs, derate counter increases by one, and the power is drastically reduced.. After about 30-40 secs, after backing out of the throttle, it will re-gain it's power and business as usual (until the next time). I've replace filters, fuel rail, RP pressure sensor, relief valve, checked crossover tube torque/re-torqued tubes, replaced in-tank lift pump, etc., but problem still remains. New Bosch injectors about 3-4 yrs ago, but only about 8-10000mi on them (replaced set because I had a failed injector). Any way, I get no codes, but cannot seem to find this fuel de-rate problem.. Thoughts? Thank you very much. Truck is tuned and has had same tune on it for 10 yrs.
With regards to the fuel cooler.... hot diesel is of course "bigger" in volume. This reduces power! We were testing the output power of an 850KW generator, but couldn't get full power from it. I leaned on the fuel tank and noticed it was screaming hot. Seems the guys had just dumped a couple of jerry cans in there since it was just a quick test. As the return fuel dumped in, it just kept getting the fuel hotter and hotter! Output was down about 15% at the end. Not a small amount at that level.

@@derrickmorrow7662 Hello It could be the pressure relief valve leaking on the rail or an injector with a high return Need to check the pressure relief valve. On your model it is on the front of the fuel rail if I remember correctly.
Hi Tony, this coming from a previous ADS employer in Canada. Myself and my boss at the time were at your lly Duramax course (2004) in Indiana. So we are still sending CCVgas or engine sewage into the filtered cold air intake to the combustion chamber to mix with the finely metered air-fuel ratio lowering HP and MPG

In the middle of nowhere in Urah, my truck says service def. A few minutes later it went to count down. Later, I had 20 miles till it went into limp mode. Stopped and pulled batterie cables. Made it to a Dodge dealership. They came back an hour later and they could not find anything wrong. Drove home 500 miles away. No problem. Twice this has happened to me. Ruined my vacation. Any lawsuits happening with this bullshit. No problems till I paid my truck off.
Definitely an intermittent concern. When you reset it by disconnecting the batteries you cleared the codes. Buy a cheap auto parts special code reader and next time it happens before you disconnect batteries check for codes first. If your truck has the recall don’t get it updated. Issues with the update
