modular synthesis and experimental audio explorations
~athletic aesthetic : vcv rack jam $marbles $stages $plaits $elements $clouds
This jam was requested by one of the subscribers, so I decided to upload it while re-learning Teletype basics. I’m going to take a break from fixed racks with Audible Instruments for some time because I really want to focus on Teletype and learn different ways to use it as the “brain” of my setups. (It has almost endless potential, but I’m too lazy to figure it out in one go). Funny thing: I’ve been patching only Audible Instruments modules for the last 2-3 months, and I have a strong feeling that I haven’t used even half of their functions. That’s why I love modular synthesis so much, I guess!
In this case, I had one restriction - to use only 5 modules: Marbles, Stages, Plaits, Elements, and Clouds. I made a few patches that were okay, but in the end, I added a mixer module because I really wanted to use Plaits and Elements as separate voices. Also, I’m starting to feel a little bit better with all the different controls and changes while jamming, but it’s still quite chaotic and challenging (I wish I had one more pair of arms and a bigger brain, man!).
Here are some patch notes:
- The “sequencing” part is almost identical to the previous patch: Marbles creates CV and triggers for both voices and runs the Stages 5-step sequencer.
- This 5-step sequencer modulates the model of Plaits, which creates those rhythmic noise patterns.
- A copy of Elements' first output goes to Clouds, which I’m using as a reverb/delay/texture layer.
- Everything else is basically modulations: each step of the Stages sequence modulates some parameters of Elements and Plaits.
Pretty simple, but I like the mood and timbres! Seems like I’m using similar techniques too often, so I’ll definitely take a little break from Audible Instruments.
As always, you can download the patch on Patchstorage or on my website (I’ll upload this patch a little later because I’m in the process of adding a few new sections to the site).

Yo! This week I was experimenting with smaller patches. When I first discovered VCV Rack (and had zero experience with modular stuff), I was really overwhelmed by the huge number of modules and didn’t know where to even start. So, this is an invitation for all the beginners out there to try pressing the buttons and tweaking the knobs! I think this is a great example that you don’t need 100 modu...

Pretty simple patch, but I love the vibe. It reminds me of my childhood in the countryside - something dreamy and peaceful, a time when problems didn’t exist yet. Call it nostalgia, but there was something really special about this pure perception of the world and things around you. It felt like home everywhere; everything felt endlessly deep and meaningful. Nowadays, whenever you try to catch ...

This is the second iteration of the previous patch. If you want more details, check the previous video and description. Main changes: 1. I got rid of Teletype and merged 3 CV sequences from Marbles instead. (Bad news: now it’s only 3 notes and the length of the sequences is the same, so we don’t have the cool feature of evolving chords anymore. But this way we can utilize Marbles better.) Also,...

This is one of my older patches, from when I had just discovered Teletype. There are going to be a few more jam reuploads from early 2024 this week, and then I will start uploading new stuff. These patches were important for my progress and my attitude towards modular synthesis, so I want to keep them here as a memory. In this patch, I’m using Teletype as a tracker. It creates 4 CV sequences wh...

I came across Hundred Rabbits a few weeks ago and was amazed by their devices! Check out their website; there are many wonderful articles about software development, sustainability, and philosophy. This is my personal favorite: 100r.co/site/computing_and_sustainability.html I’m learning all the operators now, and this is my first attempt to make something meaningful with a shift register. I tri...

This is one of the first patches of early 2024 when I started experimenting with fixed racks inspired by some limited Eurorack setups. At that time, I was overwhelmed with endless amounts of different modules, and it seemed like I was just copying the *DAW* workflow - creating a lot of *tracks* and trying to make *songs* using old principles. It was part of the transition to the modular world, ...
This is the most beautiful thing that i heard made om vcv rack. I'm trying to learn, trying to get into, but sometimes is overwhelming. I wish someday do something like this. Peace ✌🏾 cheers from Brazil 🔥
Thanks a lot!
This sounds great, what processing do you do outside of vcv rack?
Thanks! I don’t use any post-processing usually, but in this patch I’ve used Soothe to remove some harsh frequencies.
Bit of a Rheyne vibe on the go. Approved:)
cool
Very good! ❤ This sounds are truly nice... I learned a very basic function of Teletype but then I didn't use it anymore... Teletype is a module that I would like to learn more about but I think it takes a long time to learn things, unfortunately.
Thanks! Yes, the same thing with Teletype. I know the basic functions and principles but tend to avoid the more interesting sequencing stuff. A few days ago, I found a great list of resources on the Lines forum. You can check it out here, maybe it will help too : llllllll.co/t/a-users-guide-to-the-wonderful-world-of-teletype/35971 Also, you can download the PDF version of Teletype Studies, which I'm reading now : llllllll.co/t/teletype-studies-pdf-latex/6975 This module is quite scary, but I think it's going to be worth it despite the steep learning curve!
@@plantaymodular Thank you very much, Dima! I'll take a look at this material.
Interesting that you'd like to play guitar with this. I've tried that a few times, but find it quite hard to combine live playing with generative or sequenced stuff. I tend to either use guitar completely with looping and VCV effects, or stick to completely generative electronic stuff. It's just too much effort setting everything up to do both, then rehearsing with it and trying to record a take where I don't stuff it up! New sub here too, keep up the good work 😉
Thanks, I appreciate it! Yeah, it's definitely not easy, but I think there's a pretty simple solution: design patches that have structural changes in the main logic. The hard part (at least for me) is playing an instrument and trying to change "scenes" in VCV. As I mentioned in the patch notes, my goal now is to design systems so that I can focus only on playing with timbres or anything you can control with knobs, making it easier to play instruments alongside. Everything you want to control during a jam should be assigned to a controller, that's what I mean! By the way, I don't know if it's going to work, to be honest; these are just thoughts! Also, yesterday I played guitar along with the new patch, and it was totally worth it! You can harmonize VCV sequences in such beautiful ways, and it almost immediately becomes more alive.
@@plantaymodular yeah I should probably try this again. There are a few ways of creating scenes. The easiest one if you use the Mindmeld mixer is to set up a fade and map a controller to the mute button. Then when you hit the mute it will smoothly fade a channel in or out, over up to 30 seconds. I do this to just bring different parts in or out. For more complex scenes you can use a couple of Stoermelder utilities, 8-Face or Transit. You can use these to set up presets and change any parameters you want. Not something I've explored much yet, but all sorts of possibilities for controlling or automating a patch if that's what you want to do. 👍
❤
Oh, standing desk? :)
Yep 💅
Hi, Dima! Your stuff is really cool... I really liked your website too!
Thanks! Really appreciate it!
Nice patch
I randomly clicked on this video-I have absolutely no idea what this is called, but these sounds are so cool. What exactly is this?
Thanks a lot! It’s modular synthesis. Generally speaking, you have a lot of “building blocks” which do different things, and you can connect them in various ways. :) Originally, it was a hardware thing (you can search “eurorack” on UA-cam), but there’s an amazing software version called VCV Rack with thousands of modules. There is also an open-source copy called Cardinal. Both are free! It looks intimidating at first, but it's actually not that complicated and super fun.
@@plantaymodular Ohhh ok thank you :)
@@plantaymodular if you're talking about this specific timbre, he's using triggers from a sequencer to "excite" a "resonant body" aka physical modelling synthesis. rings is a modal resonaor which emulates physical objects, strings, etc
That's how people get obsessed with these ;)
Hey guys! Sorry for the silence over the past few weeks. I've been rebuilding my website almost from scratch. I transferred all the patch files and notes there, uploaded a few sample packs, and added a few new pages. If you want to check everything out, all structured and in one place, I'll be glad to see you there! --> plantay.me <--
Beautiful music for the mushrooms.

This is awesome, I love it.
Oh, very good! ❤ I started working with Teletype, Grid and Ansible! 😉 They're fantastic... Very interesting.

Very cool! The Teletype to me is a big mystery...
Yeah! I've decided to start with Monome Grid & Ansible for now because the 240-page manual for Teletype scares me.. But I've seen so many cool jams with Teletype on UA-cam (especially on the Modular Beat channel) that I definitely want to figure it out!
