I lived in Houghton county from 2000-2011 i loved going smelt dipping. Never got thousands or anything but enough to feed myself wife and kids the best time of my life I'd love to go again

Escanaba below the dam in 80...would fill up 55 gal barrels and have a trailer full ..go back down to southern wis..sell them for a buck a gallon cleaned. .....tell you what even with 6 young punks cleaning smelt that was still a lot of cleaning!!! However we supplied quit a few places with their Fish fry material lol!!

You should run deeper for splake trout. Rock bass hang in funk and and there like tilapia they have black specks on the meat I only did one and I trash the fish and this was a clean water lake so is Mullett lake.

That's pretty sad. I left Michigan in 86. But back then with a friend , we could fill up the back of a pickup truck in a night. Used to have a big smelt fry at Cedar every spring & we'd haul them a bunch.

The Haley rig is the favorite lure of folks who catch smelt on Higgins lake. Just to add another species it will catch better than most. Though I do have to give a couple honorable mentions one for our locally made lure the the Swedish Pimple and Berkley's Vibrato.

I've tried to catch walleye for years, only caught 2 in my life

I was fishing in spring with a few friends in Canada for walleye and pike. We slaughtered small male walleyes on jigs during the day and stayed out after dark on the second day and caught several large females on top water. My buddy was the one who figured it out; he tied on the biggest rapala he had in his box and casted it out and immediately got tangled; as he was untangling something big splashed his lure and he hand landed a 27 inch walleye. We then both had on big raps and just casted, twitched and waited and the big 'eyes were slamming the baits. It was a new moon night, dead calm and we couldn't see them hit and could barely see each other but we stayed out until the bite died at about 3 am. It was a blast and since have caught some 'eyes on top-water but nothing compared to that night in Canada.
